Air Treatment
www.gea-airtreatment.com Room temperature, atmospheric humidity, CO2 content, air purity through to clean-room quality GEA Air Treatment aims to pay full regard to these parameters and to turn them into the optimal indoor climate every time. Whether central air handling units, decentralised units for business or industry in the form of fan coils or unit heaters, chiller, controls and control cabinets. As system partner for air-treatment solutions this GEA Division provides components, systems and services with high value-adding potential for customers. This applies both to ensuring the individual indoor climate and to implementing extensive air-treatment projects and utilising plant at the lowest possible capital and operating costs. GEA Air Treatment is satisfying the requirements of demanding customers with increasing success. This is shown by the introduction of its air-treatment systems for example on cruise liners, in exclusive hotels, modern sports arenas, Europes leading museums, supermarkets and government buildings.
1 Air Treatment
In the past the only factors in an ideal interior climate were heating or cooling. Today, the humidity and purity of the air in very precise measure, as required for clean-room systems for example, is vitally important.
1 Air Treatment
Indoor climate is a matter of individual preference and must therefore be controllable according to customers requirements. It must also be fine-tuned to suit the infrastructure of the building.
1 Air Treatment
Communication via LON, EIB and BACnet is included in the services offered, as are prompt availability of a gateway for Ethernet and a specially developed alarm unit. With this platform GEA Air Treatment is the worlds first and only supplier of air-conditioning equipment to offer customers the means of feeding their own expertise and preferences for an individual comfort-climate directly into the specific applications. As part of its developing responsibility as system supplier GEA Air Treatment covers the entire process chain of air-treatment from the intake of outside air to the delivery of treated air into a room. It therefore includes schematic design and layout of air-treatment systems. If involved early in the working partnership, GEA Air Treatment can work very precisely and effectively from the planning stage, to design a system optimised for buildings in terms of both energy and cost. This applies above all to future-proof silent cooling, the components for which must be incorporated into a buildings architecture.
Since the market for air-conditioning is growing concurrently with affluence in the southeastern and eastern European countries, GEA Air Treatment is intensifying further development of attractively designed terminals for private use too. By expanding the services it provides, GEA Air Treatment now offers solutions for the most demanding interfacing tasks: especially in the interfacing of air-conditioning systems with building services control technology and remote maintenance systems. The potential of these services in cost-optimisation terms becomes clear if one takes account of the fact that, assuming an 80-year service life of the building, the outlay on replacement and upkeep of an air-treatment system is twice the original outlay on the plant.
GEA Air Treatment components prove their worth in both everyday residential use and in the often harsh conditions of industry and commerce.

18 Mechanical Separation
Mechanical Separation
www.westfalia-separator.com
The use of centrifugal force for the separation of solids from liquids or the separation of liquid mixtures is a long-established process-engineering technique with an equally promising future. Separators and decanters are used for a variety of processes. These include: beer, wine or fruit juice production; the dairy industry; hundreds of chemical and pharmaceutical applications; the treatment of oil and lubricants; and a wide range of further applications in which centrifugal separation enhances product quality, reduces processing times, reduces cost, the use of resources , and environmental pollution. The GEA Mechanical Separation Division, with over 50 companies around the globe, is the worldwide technology leader in the separator and decanter market and the development of complete mechanical separation process lines. Innovation, world-class engineering and comprehensive system competence forms the basis for the application of separators and decanters for key functions in the clarification of liquids, the separation of liquid mixtures, solid concentration and dewatering and extraction and recovery processes. Separation technology has been developed for over 2500 applications and the division is proud of groundbreaking innovations every year.
1 Mechanical Separation
Customers expect better results all the time our separation technology provides you with efficient support!
For years breweries have been looking at options for replacing flushing filtration using kieselguhr in the brewery with dynamic filtration methods that no longer require any filtration media. In collaboration with a leading filter manufacturer the GEA Mechanical Separation Technology Division has developed a patented method with the designation PROFI for this purpose. This replaces the classic kieselguhr filtration in the brewery. At the same time significant savings can be achieved for the user in investment costs, reduced energy input and the minimisation of beer loss. The GEA Mechanical Separation Technology Division has developed separators that extract calcium and phosphate salts as useful products from whey. The addition of calcium is gaining in significance, in particular for the production of functional foods foodstuffs whose vitamins and active constituents are explicitly stated. For comprehensive improvement of the extraction of corn gluten this GEA Division has developed a decanter with an in-built disk stack. The DiscDecanter combines the advantages of both separator and decanter in one machine. In this way the use of rotary vacuum filters can be completely avoided. The advantages of this new decanter application include both lower space requirement, and also significantly reduced costs for both investment and operation with, at the same time, an increase in processing capacity. In accordance with the IMOs high standards aimed at keeping the oceans clean, a new generation of compact separators is making the efficient treatment of bilgewater and oil sludge possible on seagoing vessels. Under the name SeaProtect Solutions this innovation, together with ancillary units, is achieving a waste water quality of < 5 ppm and is therefore reconciling the protection of our marine environment with the economic necessities of sea transport. WRP Changi, Singapore. In 24-hour continuous operation, the largest decanters in the world, developed by the GEA Mechanical Separation Division, clarify the sewage sludge of the Republic of Singapore with 4 million inhabitants. A total of 30 decanters process the sludge in the first expansion stage of the waste water treatment plant rated for 800,000 m3. More than 110 years of successful utilisation of centrifugal force for the separation of solids from fluids or the separation of fluid mixtures have given this GEA Division its status and a name.

8 Process Equipment
Any amount of variety, four product groups, one aim: process optimisation!
Plate heat exchangers made of titanium and high-grade steel are available as one of three types: gasketed, brazed or welded. They are increasingly finding their way into all branches of industry and represent the technology of tomorrow. With a fully automated state-of-the-art pressing line, GEA is setting standards for productivity and automation in the manufacture of plate heat exchangers. Since GEA has a wide product range in this field, its share in world-wide growth in this market is above average. Tailored precisely in each case to customer requirements, the wide-ranging process equipment fall into four basic product groups: compact heat exchangers made of copper and aluminium (charge-air coolers for locomotives and marine diesel engines, generator coolers for machines) and shelland-tube heat exchangers (transformer coolers for power engineering and heat exchangers for the petrochemical industry) work on the same principle and represent traditional technology. High-grade steel valves and pumps constitute another product group within this GEA Division. These liquid-processing components are of particular benefit to customers in the dairy, brewing and pharmaceutical area. Specifically for the growing pharmaceutical and biotechnology market segments GEA has developed new products for sterile applications not only able to meet markets requirements, but also setting new standards: in March 2004 for example the VESTA range of sterile valves was launched. Designed for low volumetric flows, this innovation presents an alternative especially for material-flow separation, control and process reliability to the conventional diaphragm valves used almost exclusively in this market segment. Ceramic and high-grade steel Homogenisers the fourth product group in the Process Equipment division are used primarily in dairies. As high-pressure blenders they are of considerable importance for improving quality and yield in turning raw milk into premium dairy products, a technological field in which GEA is one of the worlds leading players. GEA is further expanding its homogeniser business to include the growing biotechnology market.
The process equipment of GEA combine standardization and customization to provide optimum process technological solutions.

Foodstuffs
The food industry faces two major challenges from its markets: A growing world population must be supplied with food and customers demand for new and increasingly high-grade products must be met quickly. In the industrialised countries there is, moreover, a clear trend towards convenience products which can be prepared quickly and also have a dietary role. To comply with high hygiene standards, a production method which is both easy on the product as well as being efficient and smooth are essential prerequisites for success in the food processing industry. It is also essential to be able to adapt quickly to changing market demands in what is a highly competitive industry sector. GEA supplies a variety of modern plant systems, which meet these requirements in fine detail. Planning of plant systems is assisted by computer programs developed in-house. They enable GEA to supply equipment from standard plant systems, to special customised solutions. In its engineering for the food industry, GEA integrates the high-performance capacities, expertise, and thorough practical knowledge of experienced specialist companies from plant planning to comprehensive after-sales service. Complete production lines are designed so that, for example, mixing of products with one another or with cleaning agents is prevented. Cleaning (CIP) and/or sterilisation (SIP) are performed without dismantling and therefore without any re-infection. In large-scale projects in the food industry GEA undertakes both project management and detail planning. Interface responsibility, cost control and schedule monitoring are all handled by GEA and complement the technical quality of GEA services with the aim of flexible, cost-effective food production.

Dairy
The worlds milk consumption in 2004 was about 616 million tonnes; growth of about 10 million tonnes per annum is forecast. Milk is the worlds most important and versatile food. Consumers expect dairy products to be pure, natural, fresh and wholesome. In countries where the basic requirement for dairy products is met, expectations of their variety and convenience rise. If one adds in the strict standards imposed by food regulations and the trade, clear basic requirements to be met in milk production and processing emerge. Hygiene, storage quality, processes not detrimental to the product, optimal cooling of raw, intermediate and finished products. Global competition requires producers and processors to employ economical, reliable and flexible process management and to apply the most up-to-date technical standards. GEAs process technology is improving the processing of the white gold world-wide. The spectrum over which GEA components, systems and plant are used ranges from hygienic milking of dairy cattle through nondetrimental treatment of the milk, cheesemaking and protein extraction, to the unbroken cooling chain and conditioning of indoor air in production facilities and supermarket stores. The GEA speciality companies are opening up new and high-yielding segments by targeted innovation in, among other things, cold milk separation and protein extraction. The introduction into food and cheese production of modern clean-room technology is opening up market opportunities for GEA. This technology makes it possible for example to produce deep-frozen semi-finished and finished products with distinctly improved freshness and durability properties importantly, without additional chemical preservatives. In this promising market segment GEA customers are benefiting from complete modular clean-room systems, which are also suitable for modernising existing processing facilities.

To safeguard economic development and to cover the rising energy needs without threatening the quality of life of future generations, energy must be generated economically, safely and in an environmentally acceptable manner. A large proportion of the coal-fired power stations in Europe and the USA must, in the coming years, be replaced by new technology. Moreover 1.6 billion people in the world have no access to electricity. The economic boom in China and other regions of Asia is also resulting in an increased energy demand. GEAs Mechanical Separation Division is also registering constant growth in the worlds energy markets. Here the most important applications are in the processing of fuel oils and lubrication oil in turbine-driven power stations, or plants with diesel engines. This divisions high performance, but economical, centrifuges reduce wastage and protect the highly-loaded, sophisticated drive units from any possible damage and its consequences for people, environment and the companies concerned.

Marine
Safer, larger, faster, more environmentally friendly marine engineering is state-of-theart technology, proven under the extreme conditions of the sea. More than 30 knots cruising speed with wave heights of six metres, worldwide transport networks in which goods flow around the clock, increasingly stringent requirements concerning protection of the seas, and the global competition in shipbuilding and logistics are here setting the standards for the future. With a proportion of more than 85 percent of the worlds transport tonnage, the ship is by far the most effective, most environmentally friendly and most economical means of transport, and is a key building block within worldwide supply chains. Supported by more than 250 agencies in 50 countries GEA, as a leading company in process technology, is fully acknowledging the high requirements set in shipbuilding. Customers are profiting from components, systems and facilities which in function and design are precisely tailored to the requirements of a very wide variety of types of ship. These are fulfilling their duties on container ships, tankers and fishing trawlers just as reliably as on ferries and megayachts. Built to time on short assembly times, with long in-service lives, low operating costs, and fault-free, environmentally-friendly plant operation at constant load these are the payoffs for the customers in terms of maximum performance and cost effectiveness. For this reason many leading companies in the shipbuilding industry have selected GEA as their preferred supplier.

Environment
Every second the worlds water, soil and air receives a thousand cubic metres of waste water, solid waste materials and exhaust gases of all kinds. Only a fraction of this is treated. The number and severity of the conditions for protection of the natural environment are growing, and with them the need for solutions that are ecologically viable and economically achievable. At the same time great efforts are being made globally to meet these challenges. The saving of resources and energy; the avoidance, reduction and recycling of waste materials, waste water and emissions to the greatest possible extent - these are the requirements that are being positively implemented in GEAs process technology whilst adhering strictly to the parameters of business economics. This applies to the use of natural refrigerants in industrial cooling, to the power alcohol plant and the GEA plant for flue gas treatment, and also, for example, to the GEA systems for industrial air cooling. Increasingly more important in the safeguarding of our natural foundations for life is the treatment of waste water. Here the GEA Mechanical Separation Technology Division is one of the worlds leading suppliers of separators and decanters for the treatment of drinking water, removal of water from sludge and its concentration, as well as the recovery of resources from production processes. More than 3000 stationary and mobile GEA plants are in use worldwide for the treatment of industrial and municipal wastewater. The fact that customers using these plants can link environmental protection with sometimes dramatic cost reductions in disposal, energy and water consumption, underlines GEAs sound growth in the environmental sector.
GEA Environmental Technology is complex technology and system management at a high level. Customers profit not only from the optimal treatment of waste water, but also from the reduced energy consumption and lower disposal resources resulting from high concentration of solids.
