Introduction Sport is a clever alternative to spend a spare time. Soccer, and now even Futsal, has been indirectly turned into a life style. Long time ago, soccer is identical with a big field and eleven players. However, nowadays, this belief is gone after the booming of futsal. Futsal has also come to the market center that offering a special area to play it. Yet, the areas to play futsal, compared to billiard and bowling areas that already become the part of the executive life style, are relatively rare. Nevertheless, nowadays, badminton, volleyball, basketballs fields and so on, are changed into futsal field. It is understandable since the growing number of the futsal fields are also growing with the enthusiasms from the community toward this game. Consequently, futsal game fields are still far from a good standard. Futsal is a game played by two teams, with five people in each of the team. Resembling soccer, the aim of this game is to score the ball to the opponents goal by manipulating the ball with the feet. Beside those five main players, each team is allowed to have some back up players. Yet, unlike other forms of indoor football, futsal field is delimited by lines; not by a net or a board. Futsal is a fun, fast-paced soccer game, played indoors within the lines of a basketball court (no walls), using a small, size 3 (or size 4), low-bounce ball. The game consists of two teams of four players and a goalkeeper with unlimited substitutions and quick restarts. Futsal is now played by over 12 million people in over 100 countries worldwide and touted as one of the keys in the development of soccer greats such as Pele, Zidane, and Ronaldhino. Eventhough the Philippine national Futsal team achievements is not doing well for now , we have to look at the other side of Futsal that has turned into a famous sport that people, from young child into adult, from the clerk into the executive, are fond of. The development of Futsal it self occurs in the urban area with all of its multicultural community. Geographically, the phenomenon of Futsal in the urban area appears because of the declining size of the football field (conventional football fields). However, if we want to look at it deeper, the development of Futsal in urban area also happens because of the life styles of the people who prefer this kind of sport.

Origin of the sport The word "futsal", internationally, derived from Spanish or Portuguese word, football and sala . It was developed by Juan Carlos Ceriani, in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930 (AFC, 2003). The uniqueness of this game could gain peoples attention in the entire North America, especially in Brazil. The skills developed in this game are visible in the world-famous style of the Brazilian display outdoors on the regular size of the football fields. Pele, a famous soccer player from Brazil, for example, developed his talent playing futsal. While Brazil continues to be the center of futsal in the world, this game, now a day, in the entire world from Europe to the Central of America and North America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania- is now played under the auspice of FIFA. The first International futsal game competition was held in 1965, and Paraguay became the first that won the South African Cup. The other six South African Cup championships were held through 1979, and the entire trophies went to Brazil. Brazil continued its dominance by winning the first Pan American Cup in 1980 and won it again in 1984. The first Futsal world cup was held by the help from FIFUSA (Before the members were joining FIFA in 1989) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1982, with Brazil took the first place. Brazil, again, took another success in the second World cup championship in 1985 in Spain, but lost by Paraguay in the third futsal world cup in 1988 in Australia. International futsal competition was first held in US in 1985, in Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. Literally, Futsal is a soccer ball that played by two teams, with five people in each of the team. The aim is to score the ball in the goal of the opponent, in which the ball is manipulated with the legs. Beside the five team players, each team is allowed to have the extra players. Since it is quite new than soccer, it can be called as the Soccers younger brother. However, because it comes from the same parents, it is understandable if they have lots of similarity. Futsal junky, nevertheless, are mostly come from the soccer fanatics. A clear difference can be seen from the number of players in a futsal team that are less than the number of the soccer players. It is because the futsal field is smaller than the soccer field.

Evolution of the rules The Futsal rules have been modified several times. The number of players have changed from 7 to 5, the goal size form 4m x 2m to 3m x 2m and the weight of the ball reached almost 1 kg before coming to 390 to 430 grams. Players were not allowed to score from inside the penalty area. This rule was changed in 1990 when the offside rule was abolished as well. In 1971 the Federacao International de Salao (FIFUSA) was created. FIFA has unsuccessfully tried to take over the sport, thus creating 5 a side soccer to fight FIFUSA. Finally in 1989 most of the countries agreed to combine the sports and it was given the name Futsal to represent all indoor soccer and five-a-side foolball games. Since then, there has been acceleration on the modifications of the rules due to FIFAs policy to make the rules universal. In 1994 the throw in was replaced by the kick in, the penalty area changed from 4 to 6 metres and the keepers were allowed to play outside the D. FIFA aimed to make the sport exciting for players and supporters and they were extremely successful in their task. Futsal and soccer As the Futsal ball has low bounce qualities it spends much more time on the floor which is excellent for development of skills and ball control. The smaller area in which the game is played demands quick decision making, movements off the ball and intensity. Because of these characteristics, soccer coaches are starting to run Futsal sessions for juniors and even professional soccer teams. Famouse professional soccer players like Ronaldo, Juninho, Maradona, Rivelino and even the great Pele have already declared they played Futsal in their childhood. Compared to soccer, Futsal demands more versatile players. The positions in Futsal are goalkeeper, pivot (the main defender), right flank, left flank and target (the main attacker). Despite the main role of each position, players have to perform different roles in a game because of the quick transition between attack and defense. Futsal in as sport in its own right and if we compare it with other sports we will realize that its practice is really safe because slide tackling is not allowed. As this is limited player in the air, which causes jumping and bounding, there is less stress on the knees and ankles.

Futsal in the world Nowadays Futsal is a sporty played in more than 60 countries with professional leagues being played in many countries including Brazil, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, USA and Russia. FIFA has organized four world cups: Holand/1989, Hong Kong/1992, Spain/1996 and Guatemala/2000. In the Philippines, Filipinas Futsal Association is a Philippine futsal organization that aims to promote the game of Futsal and advocate the importance of good health & sportsmanship to the Filipinos. It envisions to not only be a haven for all Futsal aficionados but also the pioneering group that developed Futsal. FIFA has been injecting a lot of effort to develop Futsal around the world. As Futsal is such a dynamic sport, the directors of this powerful organization preview a huge popularity for the sport. They are dedicating special attention to legitimize it as an Olympic Sport. Values Futsal players fight to keep the ball from crossing the touch line by doing so they develop skill, control, and technique. A small field with lines puts players constantly under pressure from other players and out-of-play boundaries. Players must learn to settle the ball rapidly, chop sharply, shield effectively, pass quickly and move into space. Compared to walled soccer or large indoor field soccer, Futsal places a greater premium on ball control. There is no reward for errant passes because the other team gets the ball. There is no reward for errant shots because the other team gets the ball. There is no incentive to 'kick and run' because the field is too small and packed with players. Players with the ball must use proper technique to maintain control and must seek out other players in space. Players without the ball must move to 'real' space and must truly support their team mates. With Futsal, the emphasis is clearly on control and technique. Without control and technique the players cannot expect to succeed in Futsal. Playing indoor soccer in a hockey rink just does not make sense to any serious development program. Futsal is the superior activity. It promotes better technique and develops skills more rapidly.

Advantages The comfort and the safety might be one of the factors that influenced people to participate in this sport. In futsal, urban people are supposed to work together to gain their desire result. A typical of individualistic urban people can be a challenge for their participation on futsal. However, even though futsal players are less than the numbers of soccer players, it cannot be denied that one game must be played by some people. Thus, it needs a strong teamwork between players to accomplish the target of the game. Sports like Futsal is enhancing the confidence and self-esteem; empowering disadvantage groups; improving the capacity of the community to take initiatives; reduction in crime, vandalism, and delinquency; increasing social integration and co-operation; promoting a collective identity and increasing cohesion; encouraging pride in the community; improving health; and environmental improvement. Thus, it makes the urban people, who actively participate in futsal, able to improve the skill and the confidence of their group that empowering them to take part in organizing the actions and their lives collectively to reduce the financial lost economically and socially. Benefits There are many benefits to futsal for youth development compared to traditional indoor and outdoor soccer. With the small court and lack of walls, players are constantly placed in demanding decision-making situations, requiring quick thinking, good ball control, precise passing, and creative solutions. The rules of futsal favor skilful, creative play above the physical contact that tends to be a feature of traditional US indoor soccer. Slide tackles and excessive bodily contact is forbidden in Futsal, resulting in fewer injuries. Smaller team sizes allow players to get more frequent touches on the ball and increased opportunities to score goals. Players are not just a defender or an attacker but a complete player resulting in a much better all-round understanding of the game. Futsal is a simple game and devoid of complex rules such as offside Futsal is fast and exciting, providing an action packed game that keeps players physically active while having fun.

Difference between Soccer and Futsal

Soccer is an outdoor game. On the other hand, Futsal is a type of soccer that is played indoors. Since soccer is played outdoors, it is played in a larger field than Futsal, which is played in a smaller field. Another difference is in the number of players. There are eleven players play for the game of Soccer while Futsal is played with five players. In a game of soccer, three substitutions are allowed. There are unlimited substitutions in a game of Futsal. However, the game of Futsal allows 12 substitutions in each team. Throw in is the term used in Soccer while kick-in is used in Futsal. Running clock is standard in Soccer whereas Stop clock is the standard in Futsal. The half time in Soccer is 45 minutes while it is 20 minutes in Futsal. While there are no time-outs in Soccer, there is one time out per half in Futsal. Goal kick is a term used in Soccer while it is goal clearance in Futsal. While the goal keeper in a soccer game cannot touch the ball by hand once the ball is kicked back, the goalkeeper in a Futsal game cannot touch the ball by hand once it is played back. While unlimited back passes are allowed in a game of Soccer, only one back pass to the goalkeeper is allowed in Futsal. In a game of soccer, no substitute is allowed for a player who is sent off the ground. On the other hand, the player who is set off the ground is replaced by a substitute after two minutes of the game in Futsal. While a corner kick is placed in the arch in a game of Soccer, this is placed in the corner in Futsal. Futsal Injuries The most common injuries are to the ankles and knees. Sprains, strains, and fracture/dislocations are the most common types of injuries. The early teens are the most prevalent time for injury, especially to the ankles and knees. Most of the ankle sprains happened in struggles for ball possession on the ground. Knee injuries mainly occur in plant and cut moves or one-leg landings without direct contact with other players.

Futsal tactics
Formations Formation 2-2 Beginner The 2-2 formation is one of the basic formations in futsal. Players are positioned in a square. There are 2 defenders and 2 attackers. This formation is appropriate for amateur or youth teams, because is balanced in attack and defense. When attacking players have to be as wide as they can (to extend the opposite team) but when defending they have to step closer to each other (to cover the space in the middle of the pitch). Players can play this formation without making rotations but they will be very predictable and defenders will in most cases easily cover them. For this purpose the 2-2 formation has evolved in the 2-2 formation with constantly rotations. This means that all players are constantly changing their positions and try to confuse the defenders. Formation 1-2 Intermediate In the 1-2-1 formation we have 1 defender, 2 wingers and 1 target player. Players try to pass the ball to the target player who can shot on goal (if he has enough space) or pass the ball to one of his team mates that has come to assist him. It is crucial that the defender doesnt lose the ball because his team mates cant come back in time. Formation 3-1 Intermediate In the 3-1 formation we have 3 defenders and 1 attacker (target player) which is positioned very high on the pitch. Defenders try to pass the ball to the target player who can shot on goal (if he has enough space) or pass the ball to one of his team mates that has come to assist him.

Formation 3-2 Intermediate In the 3-2 formation when a team is attacking the goalkeeper comes forward so the team has 1 player more in attack (usually the goalkeeper is replaced with a player unless he is good with his feet). With this formation players dont change position often. They try to tire the defenders by passing the ball quickly around the pitch. It is important that players wait for clear shots otherwise defenders can take the ball and score. Formation 1-2-2 Advance In the 1-2-2 formation when a team is attacking the goalkeeper comes forward so the team has 1 player more in attack (usually the goalkeeper is replaced with a player unless he is good with his feet). With this formation players dont change position often. The difference with the 3-2 formation is that the wing players are closer to each other and not on the flanks. With this formation players dont change position often. They try to tire the defenders by passing the ball quickly around the pitch. It is important that players wait for clear shots otherwise defenders can take the ball and score.

Rotations
Because futsal is played in a relatively small pitch, players cant easily come into scoring situations. Rotations can help players to come into scoring situations more often, because players that are constantly changing positions are much more difficult to defend than players that dont move so much. The purpose of the rotation is to confuse the opponent and to make them run so they get tired. Changing the rhythm of play is also very important in futsal. If we run slow and then change our direction very fast, the player that is covering us cant follow us and we can receive the ball easier.

Basic rotation on the sides Beginner Instructions: This is one of the easiest rotations in futsal. Players are positioned in 2-2 formation. Player number 1 passes the ball on the other side of the pitch (to player number 2), after making the pass he runs forward. Player number 3 runs in the opposite direction as player number 1. Player number 1 and 3 change positions. Players on the other side (number 2 and 4) change positions in the same way as players number 1 and 3. Basic rotation on the sides with running to the center Beginner Instructions: Players are positioned in 2-2 formation. Player number 1 passes the ball on the other side of the pitch (to player number 2). After performing the pass he runs diagonally toward the middle of the pitch (as shown on the picture), when he reaches the middle he runs diagonally backwards toward the side line. In the meantime player number 3 runs on his position. Players on the other side (number 2 and 4) change positions in the same way as players number 1 and 3. Basic diagonal rotation Intermediate Instructions: Players are positioned 2-2. Player number 1 passes the ball on the other side of the pitch (to player number 2). After performing the pass he runs diagonally toward the middle of the pitch (as shown on the picture), when he reaches the middle he runs diagonally toward the opposite flank. In the meantime player number 3 runs on his position and player number 4 on the position of player number 3. Player 1, 2 and 3 are changing positions between them, player number 4 is running only from left to right side (and opposite) in attack.

10

Rotation with 3-1 formation Advance Instructions: Players are positioned 3-1. Player number 1 (in the middle) passes the ball on the side (to player number 2). After performing the pass player number 1 runs a few meters forward and then he changes both direction and speed and runs toward player number 2. Player number 2 makes a one two pass with player number 1 (who goes to player number 2 position) and then passes the ball to the opposite side to player number 3. Players now make the same run on the opposite side (see animation).

Set pieces
Corner kick Corner kick A Beginner Instructions: Players are positioned as shown on the picture. Player number 2 runs toward the ball as he will shot on goal. When player number 2 starts running player number 3 runs toward the middle of the pitch and then he changes his direction and runs toward the corner kick. Player number 1 passes the ball to player number 2 but player number 2 lets the ball past him to player number 3 who runs behind. Player number 3 shots on goal. Player number 4 runs on the second post. Corner kick B1 Beginner Instructions: Players are positioned as shown on the picture. Player number 1 passes the ball to player number 2 who shots on goal (he tries to shot a low ball on the second post). Player number 4 has to run in the right moment on the second post so he can kick the ball if it is 11

going out of the goal or if the keeper touches it. This is one of the most basic and easiest corner kicks. Corner kick B2 Intermediate Instructions: Players are positioned as shown on the picture. Player number 3 runs slowly toward the goal then he turns around and runs toward player number 1 who passes the ball to him. When the ball goes to player number 3, player number 2 starts to run toward player number 1 and when player number 3 stops the ball he changes his direction and runs behind player number 3. Player number 3 stops the ball with the sole (with the outer foot, in this example his right foot) and then passes the ball (with the sole) to player number 2 who runs behind him. Player number 2 then shots on goal. It is very important that players change direction before receiving the ball because otherwise defenders easily cover them. If defenders are positioned very near is better to execute corner kick B3. Corner kick B3 Intermediate Instructions: Players are positioned as shown on the picture. Player number 1 passes the ball to player number 2. Player number 2 then plays a one two pass with player number 3 and shots on goal. Player number 4 runs on the second post. Corner kick C Advance Instructions: Player number 2 has to be positioned at least around 8m from the corner. Player number 1 passes the ball to player number 2 who stops the ball. After performing the pass player number 1 runs (not too fast) toward player number 2. Player number 3 runs behind player number 1 to the corner. Player number 2 passes the ball toward player number 1 who 12

lets the ball past him to player number 3 and runs in front of the goal. Player number 3 passes the ball on first touch to player number 1 who shots on goal. Player number 4 runs on the second post. This corner kick is more difficult than the previous ones but is much more efficient. If properly performed the player who shots on goal gets alone close to goal.

Free kick
Free kick A Beginner Instructions: Player number 2 is position in front of the barrier. Player number 1 passes the ball to player number 2 who passes the ball back to player number 1. Player number 1 then shots on goal. Player number 2 has to prevent the defender to run after the ball. Free kick B1 Beginner Instructions: This free kick can be performed if there are two players in the barrier (mostly amateur teams position like this better teams put the outer player in the barrier a few meters back so he can cover at the same time the direct shot on goal and the pass to the player near the post). Player number 1 passes the ball to player number 2 who shots on goal. Free kick B2 Intermediate Instructions: Now the barrier is correctly positioned so the pass to player number 2 is not possible. Player number 4 runs away from goal and then suddenly turns around and runs on the second post, at that time player number 1 shots the ball on the second post and player number 4 tries to kick it in the goal. 13

Free kick B3 Intermediate Instructions: Player number 4 runs away from goal at that time player number 1 passes the ball to player number 3 who passes the ball on first touch to player number 4 who has in meantime changed his direction to the middle of the penalty area. Player number 4 than shots on goal. Passes and movements have to be on time. Free kick C Advance Instructions: This free kick can be performed when the set piece is from the side. Players number 2 and 4 are positioned inside the penalty area. Players 2 and 4 exchange their positions (player number 2 makes a block to the player number 4 defender). Player 1 passes the ball to player number 4 when he runs toward the center of the penalty area. Player number 4 shots on goal on first touch.

Defense
In futsal a good defense tactic can be the key for achieving positive results, especially when playing against a better team. Every coach has to prepare his team and individual players on several defense tasks. Futsal tactics in defense can be divided into three categories: (a) team tactic (4 players), (b) group tactic (3 or 2 players) and (c) individual tactic (1 player). Futsal team defense tactic: There are several factors that we have to consider when deciding how our team will play in defense (depending on both teams): Technical skills Tactical skills Physical condition Number of players In futsal it is very important to know how the opposite team is playing and based on that we decide for the right team defense tactic. We can choose from: Low or zone formation: is a defense formation where all players are positioned low on the pitch (in front of the defending goal). Every player covers a certain part of the field and is focused on preventing shots on goal and not on stealing the ball. Middle formation: is a defense formation where we make pressure on the opponent that has the ball in possession. Defenders are waiting the opponent player to make a mistake and/or a bad pass. 16

High formation or pressing: is a defense formation where every player marks his opponent across the whole playing area. Formation on set pieces: is a defense formation when the opposite team has a set piece (free kick, corner kick or out). We can chose between player on player defense or space defense. Forced formation (with a lower number of players):is a defense formation when your team has fewer players on the pitch than the opponent, that is, when the opposite team is playing with their goalkeeper. Strategy Playing Futsal is not much different from playing football in general, it takes stamina, strength, mental and strategy. There is little fundamental difference in the game and setting the pattern of attacks. The pattern of the game in a game dominated Futsal foot to foot, meaning the settings in defense, and attack more done with short passes, given the size of the field is smaller than a football field. With this pattern and teamwork skills especially in dealing with the ball, feeding, keeping the defense and attacking the opponent's area is needed. In Futsal rarely applied to long passes, this strategy is a waste of energy, besides that it also does not reflect a good game and nice views. However, instead it is forbidden or not recommended, stay back to the individuals themselves, like how to play a game of Futsal is. Rarity of these techniques applied, it is better to be creating a beautiful pattern of the game, good views and the beautiful goal. Likewise with heading the ball, goals that could be created with the head looks good and nice to see, especially if the attack was carried out using a structured attack pattern. Mastery of the ball To train the control of the ball the first stage is to focus on strength and agility in the movement of the foot, as I explained in the article Tips for warming up before playing futsal, heating is necessary, do it as often as possible dribling to harmonize the movement of the foot and the direction of the ball, can be done with a variation zig -zag. 17

Players composition To form a good team, look at the skill of each player in terms of control of the ball, setting up attacks and player who has a foot model of the movement as a defender of the meeting, the meeting here means that do not model the movement of his feet too long, this can more useful to inhibit the rate of movement of the ball the opponent, and the opposite type of player with more long movement can be used as an attacker. For the midfield needed a figure who has the ability to set the attack and that more emphasis is the most prime stamina ability, given its position allows to attack and survive Goalkeeper A goalkeeper is a very special position and has to be trained different than other futsal players. Back in days a goalkeeper role was to preventing the ball entering into the goal. In modern futsal a goalkeeper needs to be much more than that. He has to be good with his feet too, he has to act like a fifth defender when it comes to long balls and he has to even participate in some attacking plays. Today if we look at a futsal match we see that the goalkeeper is actively taking part in the game. Achieving the skills is very difficult and demands a lot of training. It is important that trainings consist in exercises that improve different goalkeeping skills. But I will recommend that at the beginning we make more emphasis on proper positioning on the pitch and stopping the ball with his arms and when achieving the basics we start introducing passes (with hands and feet) and defense play. But we must not forget that even after achieving some level of goalkeeping skills we have to train them constantly in order retain or improve them.
