Overview

1 1.1

OVERVIEW Purpose of Consistency Check

The GSM/DCS radio networks are on a fast and continuous development track. More coverage, capacity and better service quality are sought by frequent changes in network configurations and optimisation of network parameters. In the process of network optimisation it is possible that errors appear in the network configuration. The Consistency Check feature provides you with efficient tools for error checking of radio network configuration. With this feature you can ensure that the configuration of your radio network is consistent with general network planning rules. Once identified and localised with the Consistency Check feature, the exceptional and undesired configurations and radio parameter values can be corrected with other NMS radio network management features.

1.2

Benefits of Consistency Check

Manual checking of consistency for a large network is an extremely tedious and time consuming task. Consistency Check allows you to save time and effort that would otherwise be spent on manual error checking. The Consistency Check feature makes it possible for you to check for discrepancies both in operational parameter values and in planned ones. Checking the planned configuration helps to minimise the inconsistencies before implementing a new plan into the operative network. Without proper checking tools it is virtually impossible to maintain the consistency of your network due to the large number of network elements that need to be managed. The Consistency Check feature enables concentrated and centralised configuration checks that can be used before, during and after any changes in network configuration. A larger number of problems that reduce the overall network quality are configuration errors. Consistency Check feature reduces significantly the amount of time and effort needed to find and correct errors in network configuration, thereby improving network quality. Greater network quality means greater customer satisfaction as well as greater revenue.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION Usage of Consistency Check

The following chart illustrates ways in which a network operator may make use of the Consistency Check feature.

2.2

Implementation
Consistency Check is implemented by a graphical user interface application. In the main window of the application, the user defines: The managed objects to be included in the check (the user can select either all managed objects or only selected ones) The parameter set to be checked (actual or named set)

Functional Description

The check to be executed (one check may include several rules)

The application executes the check in the NMS database. In case of a named set, if an object does not have the set in question, the actual values of the object are taken into comparison instead. This is to reflect the situation that would be in the network after downloading the plan.

Figure 2. Principle of operation of Consistency Check Once all the parameter values have been fetched from the database and checked against the specified consistency rules, the results are shown in the Consistency Check Previewer window. Consistency Check Previewer is based on the Oracle Reports application. In addition to displaying the results on a window, you can print the results or save them as a file for later use.

2.3

Available Checks
There are several checks available for GSM specification originated consistency rules as well as for those to search for general radio network planning errors. The T10 release of Consistency Check includes a total of twenty different checks. If necessary it is also possible to include operator specific checks. The T10 of Consistency Check release enables the checking of, for example: BTS Parameters

Improvements from T9 Release

The T10 version of Consistency Check includes some new checks, raising the total of available consistency checks to twenty. New checks in T10 release enable the checking of, for example: Background Parameters of Adjacency Background Parameters of TRX Background Interfering Frequencies of Adjacent TRX Background IOU Interfering Cells in TRX Background Parameters in BTS Referred Cells of Adjacency Work Order for BSC-BTS Connections
