Course Description

This seminar, taught by two Brussels-based practitioners working for an EU public affairs and communications consultancy, aims to give an introduction to EU interest representation through case studies and presentations by external speakers (from EU institutions, industry, NGO, trade association). The first four sessions will be devoted to setting the Brussels scene and presenting the different influencers in the EU decision-making environment, be they institutions, trade associations, the media etc. The seminar will be based on concrete examples of strategies and campaigns devised and implemented by the two EU public affairs and communications consultants in different sectors such as energy, competition, intellectual property or financial services.

Pedagogical format
Structure of the seminar: - EU press review by students, followed by discussion (15 minutes); presentation of the theme (30 minutes); - case study presentation by students, followed by discussion (15 minutes); - short break (5-10 minutes); - presentation by external speaker (journalist, EU official, business, association) followed by discussion (50 minutes).

Course validation
The final mark will be based on the following: - press review (20%); - Written Paper (60%); - oral Participation (20%). Methodological explanations will be given during the first session. The case study will be expected to identify: - what is at stake; - key players and main arguments; - the relevant decisionmaking procedures and the appropriate approach towards each institution and the media; - the strategy which was followed and/or your recommendations; - concrete examples.

Workload
Preparation and presentation of two short press reviews as part of a group. Preparation and oral presentation of a case study as part of a group. Ongoing participation to the seminar discussions.
