LETTER FOR THE 2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Readings: Is 40, 1-5. 9-11, 2 Pt 3, 8-14, Mk 1, 1-6 I used to help out on weekends at St. John the Baptist Church in King City. One Sunday morning I got a call from the perplexed owner of a motel: one of her guests wanted to know what time Sunday Mass was, and so the manager looked in the phone book and found our number. When I told her the time of the next Mass she was all confused because, she said, I thought that this was St. Johns Baptist Church. I then tried to explain to her that St. John was really a Catholic, despite his name. John was the one who, like the voice of an important person, still speaks to us from the Scriptures, telling us to have a new way of thinking and acting; in other words, to be converted. His call to conversion means that we should prepare a way for the Lord, remove what keeps Christ from coming into our lives, take away what keeps us from seeing who He is and what He wishes to give us. The Baptist told his hearers to change their ways and practice justice. The Church has to continue to preach that message because it prepares us to receive Christ. John the Baptist was following in the tradition of Isaiah, using some of his words. Isaiah was imagining the return of the Jews from captivity, announcing the good news that God himself had set them free; it was God who made the journey home possible and smooth because God would not give up on his people. The Gospel today tells us that God will lead us to true interior freedom if we make the way straight and smooth for His Word to enter our lives. Once on a visit to the villages in a large Franciscan parish in the Philippines we had to create a road for our jeep as we went, getting around boulders and out of river beds. That is symbolic of what we need to do to make a road for Christ in our lives. John was preaching repentance, conversion of life, especially social justice, teaching that we should share our goods with those who need them. Johns baptism was a sign of conversion to a new life, drowning our selfishness in the pool of Gods mercy. John even baptized Jesus himself because Christ wanted to give us an example of how to be open to Gods call. Jesus himself also baptized people as a sign that He was going to bring us a different type of baptism, one that would wash us clean interiorly and give us a new life. In recent years the popes have called for a new evangelization, a new announcing of the Good News of Jesus. We need to translate the Gospel into words and ideas that modern society can understand. What we learned as children helped us grow as Christians, but we need solid food now; we need to see and show that the call to repentance makes very good and necessary sense for our society today. What John the Baptist did in preaching to soldiers and merchants,

telling them to be honest, we have to do and preach in ways that people today will understand and accept as Good News. This Good News is that we are called to share in Gods own life: Jesus came to give us His Holy Spirit and that is why the full meaning of Christmas is Pentecost when Jesus came to live again in his followers because they have received his Holy Spirit. The Baptists call is for us to continue each day our new life, our conversion as followers of Jesus. We are all called to live by the Spirit of Jesus. Those who do not do this are described as living according to or in the flesh; this means living as if there were no God. From his writings we know how much St. Francis followed the direction of the Spirit and taught his followers to do the same. Perhaps it may sound strange to talk of Pentecost during Advent, but that is what Jesus came to give us, His Spirit: we receive the Spirit when we listen to John the Baptist calling us to prepare the way for Jesus who will give us Spirit and Life. I have friends and relatives who go to the Baptist Church, even if its not St. Johns. By their sincerity and faith they preach to me; I hope we can do the same for them. Letter provided by Fr. John Vaughn, OFM

YEAR END PLANNING

If you have been reading the business section of either of our local papers you have no doubt noticed that the year end tax advice columns are starting to appear. The last quarter of the year is the time to take the necessary actions to reduce that tax liability that looms just around the corner. Many folks choose charitable giving as the avenue to reduce those taxes. If this is your plan please do not forget our parish. If you need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal this can be done directly to the church and tax can be avoided. We know that there are many demands on your resources, and many charitable organizations asking for your gift, just remember that what you give to your church is used right here. It may be for food for the needy, education for our youth, or services to other sectors of our community, but it stays here. If there is a special need that you would like your gift to address just say so with a note and we will honor your wish. Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our parish is stronger and better able to cope with local needs because of your gifts.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS - December 10-11. The

special envelope can be found in you envelope packet. Please be generous.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

TOWN HALL Q&A WEEK SIX

Q. How does the Parish currently make up the difference between income and expenses (i.e., the deficit of $130,809 in the most recent fiscal years budget)? A. For many years now, the Parish has been making up budgetary shortfall through funds secured from two sources: Bingo (appx. $60,000) and rental of the Casa de Amparo ($70,000). By April 2012 Casa will vacate the space they are currently renting from the Parish, so we will no longer be able to rely upon that income stream. Again, I believe a vigorous Stewardship program and campaign will help the Parish to secure the resources we need.--Fr. Chuck

Carta Para el Segundo Domingo de Adviento

Isaas 40, 1-5; 9-11 2 Pedro 3, 8-14 Marcos 1, 1-6

Reunin Informativa Preguntas y Respuestas Semana Seis

--Padre Chuck (Carlos) Talley, ofm
