Cemetery clean up
COunCIL accountants have made a real difference to Chesters Overleigh Cemetery in Handbridge. The Financial Management staff removed vegetation from memorial stones, undertook a general tidy up, and carried out a leaf and litter collection. Also there on the day were staff from the Cemeteries and Crematorium Service and Streetscene. In addition a local memorial mason was also on hand and local historian Len Morgan gave a talk to the volunteers on the history of the cemetery. Handbridge Park Councillor neil Sullivan said: The eighteen-strong group worked really hard and made a real difference to Overleigh Cemetery. Volunteers are continuing to undertake a great deal of work at Overleigh Cemetery and the latest was a prime example of what can be achieved.

HaNDbRIDgE HISTORy gROup THE group meets monthly at St Marys Church Hall in Handbridge. They have a speaker each month and visits to local places of interest in the summer. The next meeting is on Thursday 15th December when the speaker is Dorothy Nicolle who will talk about English Pub signs. The meeting starts at 7.30pm, tea/coffee from 7pm. CRIMEFILE Crimes reported in the Overleigh area recently include: Dolphin Court - fishing equipment stolen from a garage. Thurston Road - car parked on the roadside was scratched. Winchester Square - damage to thefront door of premises but no entry gained. Grosvenor Nuffield Hospital - thief stole a purse from a bedside locker. Hough Green - a lock was forced from a garden shed but nothing was stolen. Burnham Road - a Carrera bicycle was stolen from the back garden. Makeover for Handbridge shops THE main row of shops in Handbridge is to get a facelift. Renovation work will take place on the 17 buildings from Alec Edwards up to Martins newsagents. This will involve restoration of the timber, some of which is rotting in the tudor-style buildings. Church lane widened PLANNERS have given permission to widen the access road to the church hall at St Marys Church, Handbridge. Four fir trees and a sandstone wall will be removed to create a wider lane which is also used by the nursery. Light up a Life on the river THE Hospice of the Good Shepherds Light Up a Life event takes place on the River Dee on Sunday 4th December, from 4-6pm. Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and based on information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:

Recent spate of Bike Thefts in the Handbridge area particularly at West Cheshire College. Incidents of anti social behaviour reported within Edgars Field, particularly after school hours. Plans to address the issue PCSO Pendrey and her colleagues from the Chester Outer neighbourhood Policing Team to provide regular high vis patrols at the college and surrounding areas. Bike etching sessions are due to take place over the coming weeks. PCSO Pendrey has been working closely with the Community Safety Wardens who have provided extra patrols within Edgars Field over recent weeks. These patrols will continue to take place until the issues raised have been resolved. Local Priorities You said - Parking problems causing congestion outside Schools in the Overleigh and Westminister Park areas, normally as a consequence of school pick ups and drop offs. We did PCSO Pendrey and PCSO Fox have been working together distributing parking leaflets around the schools offering advice for parents on where and how to park safely. Handbridge beat meeting Monday 12th December 11am-12noon, at The Old Dee Bridge, (opposite The Ship Inn).

Spanish stars at the Catholic High School

THiRTy students and their teachers have returned from a fantastic school visit to the Catalan capital Barcelona. With everything from museums to architecture, and from sports stadia to the Hard Rock Caf, it was the trip of a lifetime for the students with one Sixth Form student celebrating his 18th birthday while he was away. The visit is organised by the Spanish and Art departments at the school, and the opportunity to use their Spanish is invaluable to the language students. Fran Vickers is aiming to study languages at Leeds University next year and she said: Estupendo this visit is really worthwhile for me. Not only speaking and learning Spanish but also looking at the culture and the history of the area is just superb. Two of the students are applying for places at university to study architecture. The time spent hearing about and then seeing the Basilica Expiatori of Sagrada Familia was second to none. Sara Hammond,, who is applying to Cambridge, said: The story of the commissioning, What is a snail? A slug with a crash helmet planning and building of this amazing basilica is a real inspiration, and the fact that it is still unfinished means you can still see how Gaudis vision is being turned into reality. One member of the group will certainly not forget the visit as Neil McCallum celebrated his 18th birthday in the Parc Guell, with traditional Spanish cakes, and then later in the Hard Rock Caf in the Placa Cataluyna in central Barcelona. The visit was organised in conjunction with Spanish Star, a family run company headed up by Michael and Estrella Chapman. Michael told us We dont always have our evening meals in the Hard Rock Caf, but on special occasions it is a great treat for the children. Head of Spanish at The Catholic High School Rosie Carr added: We have been coming to Barcelona for many years now and the students always get a tremendous amount from the visit. it is fantastic to see the students enjoying the visit and to hear them enthuse about it.

Local artists success in major national art exhibition

WORk by local Pulford artist Andrew kinmont has been selected from almost 700 national and international entries to appear alongside paintings of some of Britains leading figurative artists. The Royal institute of Oil Painters is the only British institution devoted to celebrating the medium of oil painting. Founded in 1882, the Royal institute chooses only the very best submissions and past exhibitors have included Walter Sickert, Dame Laura knight, Fantin Latour and Auguste Rodin. When notified of his acceptance, Andrew said: Not only is this wonderful national recognition of my work, it also raises much needed awareness of artists working outside London, particularly in the north. Hopefully it will encourage more local artists to put themselves forward on the larger Uk art stage. His work is inspired by the local Cheshire and North Wales landscape and sells nationally and abroad. Monumental crime wave

CHESHiRE West and Chester Council held a conference last month to help find a solution to a crime wave that is playing havoc with the Boroughs historic buildings and monuments. Soaring values of second hand scrap metal destined for China and india- have led to a spate of thefts from historic buildings. Heritage crimes logged in the past year include 14 attacks on churches and
more on other targets ranging from thefts from Chesters Roman remains to graffiti at a World War Two pillbox in Saltney. The graffiti on Type 24 Pill box is very hard to move and it may have caused permanent damage to fabric.This is an example of an ordinary monument being affected.
St. Johns Church, has been subjected to repeated graffit, which is frustrating for Chester Renaissance who have spent about 250,000 recently on improving the area, removing graffiti and mending broken fencing. Much of the graffiti is on ancient sandstone that proves hard to clean.

Jobs to do in December include digging over the vegetable bed and adding a layer of organic matter on the surface of the soil to rot down over winter. I would also recommend that you mulch the flower borders in winter. Use well rotted manure, or rotted green waste which can be bought from garden centres or your local recycling centre. Put a layer about 2ins deep around all your plants. This will act as a blanket keeping the soil further down, unfrozen during freezing weather. Many plants were killed last winter because their roots were frozen for long periods of time and a layer of mulch can help protect the more tender plants. Prune overgrown shrubs whilst the leaves are off the plants and you can see the old and new growth. Plant out bare rooted trees or roses once they arrive, provided the soil is not frozen.
deCeMbeR is a quiet time of year when there is little colour in the garden and the remains of brown foliage is the dominant feature. if possible, try to design your garden so that there is an area of winter colour visible from a frequently used window and also at the entrance to the house. This will give you some cheering colour in the depths of winter. Cyclamen have lovely marbled green leaves which contrast well with the golden and green foliage of evergreen shrubs such as Elaeagnus x ebbingei Limelight or the yellow leaved Choisya ternata Sundance. Plant some around the shrub for winter interest and add some small daffodils and crocuses for colour in February. Enjoy the beauty of frost on the leaves of plants such as the robust purple leaved Heucheras, holly or the indestructible Euphorbia robbiae. If you want scent in winter I recommend the winter box, Sarcococca hookeriana or confusa varieties. These unassuming little shrubs have evergreen foliage and highly scented tiny white flowers in winter so put a couple near your door or in an 64

FORMER Queens Park High School PE teacher Dennis Dorman has been given a lifetime achievement award. Dennis was recognised at the third annual Cheshire West and Chester Sports Awards. Council Chairman Cllr Eleanor Johnson and the Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Cllr Stuart Parker presented the awards. The prestigious Special Recognition award was awarded to Dennis Dorman and Jane Hodson. Dennis has dedicated over 35 years to teaching PE at QPHS and up until recently was the Trustee at Chester youth Club. He is also the Treasurer and Secretary for the Chester Schools FA and was recently awarded a silver long service medal by the English Schools FA for 25 years service to schools football. Elsewhere, the joint winners of the Club of the year award were Deva Handball Club and Ellesmere Port Club of Gymnastics. The winners of the Coach of the year awards were Little Suttons Ron Bell and Hooles Sally Napthen. Stephen Jameson and Vanessa Skillen took away the Awards for Volunteer of the year.
