Quote of the Month

As a young person growing up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, I have many fond memories of the time I spent in the Garland County Library. As a student in high school and college, my love for learning was fostered and enhanced by all the resources I made use of in the libraries where I studied. Today the library is not only a special place for me but for my family as well. Bill Clinton

To get credit for this year, you must make that donation by December 29 as that is the last day were open in 2011. We will accept just about anything you think the Library can use: Books, old furniture, rugs, old items for our Genealogy Room, or any other item that you have but dont want to throw away. You can also make memorial donations or give something to honor a special individual. Well send you a letter and tax statement indicating your donation and you get to use this as a charitable donation on your taxes. Thanks to the many Friends of the Library volunteers who contributed their time and talent this past year to make our programs and events a great success. We say thanks to the Book Room volunteers who work each week to sort and price the many books that we sell every day. We are especially grateful for Carol Ball and Master Gardeners who work all year to keep our landscaping looking great. We appreciate all you do for us. Merry Christmas to all!

FROM THE FRIENDS Friends of the Library News On Saturday, October 29, the Friends held their Fall Book Bake Plant Sale and earned $939.60 for the Library. The Book Sale netted $415.35 and disposed of much overstock. There was also a table with free books that disappeared quickly. The Bake Sale earned $359.25, selling out before closing time with many yummy treats for the lucky buyers. The Plant Sale, run by the Claybank Master Gardeners took place in front of the West Wing. The MGs deserve special thanks for their perseverance in cold, windy conditions. They netted $165.00. For this, we must thank our many volunteers who made the event possible: Chuck Auman, Liz Babine, Carolyn Ball, Gail Bankston, Gail Berry, Jean Beverly, Betty Borer, Pat Carlson, Sara Carroll, Sally Covington, Susan Cox, Pat Dunlap, Mary Flurer, Gerald Forrester, Lori Fox, Mary Grace Hood, Earl Hyers, Roberta Hyers, Marian Jenkins, Kathy Kalina, Joanne Knight, Ellen Pierce, Elaine Potts, Beverly Raley, Sandy Smith, Sue Switzer, Sally Tarter, Mary Vaeth, Lael Walding, Estus Walker, Pat Walker, Sandy Ward, Linda Westphal, Natalie Whalen, and Jennifer Whitman . If we have omitted thanking anyone, please forgive us. We are grateful for all our helpers. Most of all, we must thank Sandra Holmes for supporting us in producing these sales, and thanks to the library staff, especially Darnell Johnson and Elaine Land for their special help.
MEMORIALS The Ozark-Dale County Public Library gratefully accepts donations for memorials. You may bring in your book or you may give us a suggested subject and well make the selection. Your donation is tax deductible and a tax letter is mailed to each donor, along with a memorial card to the families of the designated person. Bookplates are placed in all books to commemorate your gift.

FROM ALL THE STAFF AND BOARD OF THE OZARK-DALE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

HOLIDAY HOURS The Library will be closed December 23-24 and December 30-31.

FROM THE CREEL RICHARDSON ROOM By Jocelyn Rayford For those persons researching relatives from the state of Georgia, a rich collection of books and journals have been given to the Library by the late Alfred W. Tate, the Dale County Genealogical Historical Society, and Ceya Minder of the Southeast Alabama Genealogical Organization. Books that list Georgians during the Revolutionary period are: Georgias Roster of the Revolution by L.L. Knight, and Georgia Citizens & Soldiers of the American Revolution by Robert S. Davis, Jr. Researchers with Georgian relatives who participated in the Confederate Army might find these books relevant: Georgias Confederate Soldiers Who Died As Prisoners of War 1861-1865, by James E. Stallings, Sr.; Index to Georgia Civil War Confederate Pension Files, by Virgil D. White; Georgia Veterans & Their Widows Who Applied for Government Pensions in Alabama, compiled by F. W. Weatherbee, Jr. For researchers seeking information about their African American relatives in Georgia, there is The 1850 Census of Georgia Slave Owners, compiled by Jack E. Fox. Unfortunately this compilation does not indicate sex or age as does the Dale County Slave Owners Census, so it is of limited value. Also available, is a copy of a bank book: Registers of Signatures of Depositors in the Augusta Georgia Branch of the Freedman Savings and Trust Company/: Vol. 1, Nov. 1870-June 1822, by Alice O. Walker.
