International System of Units Learning Objectives: At the end of this lesson on International System of Units (SI), you will

List and apply the SI units for Length List and apply the SI units for Mass List and apply the SI units for Time

International System of Units (SI) is a number system used to measure and represent physical quantities such as length, mass, and time. The seven standard physical quantities measured are length, current, time, mass, temperature, luminous intensity, and amount of substance. The SI system is followed throughout the world except for three countries namely USA, Liberia, and Myanmar. What is a Unit of Measurement? A unit of measurement is a definite magnitude of a physical quantity that is used as a standard for measuring that physical quantity. For example, a metre can be the standard unit used to measure length. 30 metres means 30 times the standard measure of 1 metre. Of course. Length is measured and represented in metre. But there are other common Can you tell me about units of measurement of the units of length such as centimetre and measurement for kilometer. I will show you a length? table of different units used to measure length.

SI Units for Measuring Length 10 millimetre = 1 centimetre 10 centimetre = 1 decimetre 10 decimetre = 1 metre 10 metre = 1 decameter 10 decametre = 1 hectametre 10 hectametre = 1 kilometre Table 1. Units of Length All unit names and symbols are written in lower case. So, you write metre and not Metre. The abbreviations or short forms for the unit symbols are mm (millimetre), cm (centimetre), dm (decimeter), m (metre), dam (decameter), hm (hectametre) and km (kilometer). You can write the name of a unit in plural, but you should not write the unit symbol in plural.

Now that you know the different units of measurement are you ready to learn how to convert from one unit to another? Quick Tip: 100 cm = 1 metre 1000 m = 1 km Table 2. Common Conversions Example 1: Manishas puppy dog ran away from home. After searching for a long time, Manisha found the dog near a dustbin 3 kms away from her home. How many metres did the puppy travel away from home? Look at Table 2. It says, 1 km = 1000 m. So, 3 kms will be three times 1000 = 1000 + 1000 + 1000 = 3000 m So, the puppy travelled 3000 m away from home. Example 2:

Ramu was baking cake. When the cake mix was placed in the oven , the height of the dough was 10 cm. After the mix got baked and became cake, the height of the full cake was 30 cm. How bigger did the cake grow? Difference in Length of cake = Final Height Initial Height = 30 cm 10 cm = 20 cm Quick Tip: To convert a number in metres to km remove the last three zeroes in the number. For example, 16000 metres = 16000 = 16 km 3000 metres = 3000 = 3 km 80000 metres = 80000 = 80 km

Quick Check: 1. Choose the correct answer: a) 10 mm = 1 dm b) 100 cm = 1 m c) 100m = 1 km d) 1000 m = 1 hm 2. 2000 cm is equal to a) b) c) d) 2 km 20 dm 200 mm 20 m

Say your mom asks you to buy 1 kilogram of tomato. You go to the vegetable market to buy tomato. To weigh the tomatoes, the vendor uses one 500 gm weight and two 250 gm weights instead of a single 1 kg weight. How will you know if you are buying 1 kg of tomato or less? You need to know the SI system for mass.

SI Units for Measuring Mass 1000 mg = 1 gm 1000 gm = 1 kg

Table 3. Units for Mass

Here, mg is the unit symbol for milligram, gm for gram, and kg for kilogram. Example 3: Sakthi was coming from the supermarket. His bag had 250 gm of brinjal, 1 kg of rice, and 500 gm of onions. How much grams of total weight did Sakthi carry? First, convert 1 kg of rice into grams. Look at Table 3. It says 1 kg = 1000 gm. So, Sakthi is carrying 1000 gm of rice. Add: Brinjal Rice Onions 250 1000 500

1750 gm

So, Sakthi was carrying a total weight of 1750 gm.

Quick Check: 3. Which of the following combinations will give a total weight of 2200 gm? a. b. c. d. 750 gm, 1.2 kg, 200 gm 800 gm, 1.2 kg, 400 gm 750 gm, 1.1 kg, 350 gm 800 gm, 1.1 kg, 450 gm

It was Sports Day in Toon Toon School. Mani will be the time keeper for all the running races. Mani was happy but wanted to brush his knowledge of time and its units. You can also learn the units of time along with Mani.

SI Units for Measuring Time 1000 milliseconds = 1 second 60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour 24 hours = 1 day 3600 seconds = 1 hour

Table 4. Units of Time

The symbol for unit minutes is min, for seconds is s, for hours is h, and for day is d. Example 4 The time in Dubai lags behind the time in India by 1: 30 (1 hour 30 mins). If the time in India is now 4:30 pm, what is the time in Dubai? The time in Dubai lags behind by 1:30. So, time in Dubai is 1:30 hours behind 4:30 pm. So, it is 3 pm in Dubai. Example 5 It takes 11 hours and 45 minutes to travel by bike from point A to point B. And it takes half a day to travel by car from point A to point B. If you want to reach point B fastly, will you travel by bike or car and why? Travel by bike = 11 h 45 min Travel by car = 12 h (half a day. From Table 4, 1 day is 24 hours and so half a day is 12 hours.)

So, to reach Point B fast, you have to travel by bike.

Quick Check: 4. Which of the following represents 2 hours a) 120 s b) 180 s c) 120 min d) 180 min
