Nellambito di un corso di progettazione presso lIstituto di Edilizia e Design dellUniversit di Tecnologia di Vienna, sotto la guida degli architetti Peter Fattinger, Sabine Gretner e Franziska Orso, ventisei studenti di architettura hanno disegnato due edifici per servizi sociali da realizzare a Orange Farm, un sobborgo nero del postapartheid alla periferia di Johannesburg. Il progetto nasce dal Masibambane College, un istituto scolastico di Orange Farm sostenuto dal Comune di Vienna dal 1996. Gli studenti hanno progettato due strutture: un edificio polifunzionale per questa scuola in continua crescita e un centro di accoglienza diurna dotato di un laboratorio coperto per Modimo o Moholo, una locale associazione che si occupa di disabili. Dopo una prima fase di progettazione (tre mesi) svolta a Vienna, nel febbraio 2004 il gruppo di lavoro si trasferito a Johannesburg dove ha materialmente completato entrambi gli edifici nellarco di cinque settimane. Grazie allapplicazione di soluzioni innovative e sperimentali stato possibile impiegare materiali semplici, economici e reperibili sul posto. La squadra stata affiancata da cinque operai specializzati di Orange Farm e membri dellassociazione Modimo o Moholo. Gli aspetti positivi del progetto non consistono soltanto negli esiti architettonici, ma anche, e soprattutto, nel complesso processo di sviluppo seguito e nellarricchimento personale scaturito dalla condivisione quotidiana di questa esperienza.

In the course of a design project at Vienna University

of Technologys Institute of Housing and Design under the guidance of architects Peter Fattinger, Sabine Gretner and Franziska Orso twenty-six architecture students designed two social facility buildings for Orange Farm, a typical township of the post-apartheid era on the periphery of Johannesburg. Masibambane College, a school in the township that has been supported by the city of Vienna since 1996, was the starting point for the project. The students planned a multifunctional building for this constantly growing college. In addition they developed a day-care center with a sheltered workshop for Modimo o Moholo. After an initial three-month design phase in Vienna the team traveled to Johannesburg in February 2004 where they erected both buildings in a self-build process within the space of only five weeks. Simple, inexpensive and locally available building materials were employed using innovative and experimental detail solutions. The team was strengthened by five skilled workers from Orange Farm as well as members of the organization for the disabled. The special aspects of this project are not just the architectural end products but, above all, the complex development process and the insight that was gained through shared everyday experiences. Caratteristica del sobborgo, sviluppato in senso orizzontale, sono le sue baracche ricoperte di onduline. unarea interamente residenziale, con pochissime infrastrutture, priva di servizi essenziali come banche, ospedali e centri commerciali. Il tessuto sociale afflitto da povert e da alti tassi di disoccupazione e analfabetismo. La rete dei rapporti sociali, tuttavia, ben funzionante. Una percentuale consistente del reddito investito nelleducazione dei minori, un atteggiamento positivo che si riflette anche nellaspetto esteriore del sobborgo. The spread-out district is characterized above all by corrugated iron shacks. Orange Farm is a completely residential area with a very limited infrastructure. Facilities such as banks, hospitals and larger commercial centers are lacking. Poverty, high unemployment levels and illiteracy are characteristic of the social situation. A large proportion of income is invested in childrens education. This positive attitude is also shown in the appearance of Orange Farm. Although erected by the residents themselves with only the extremely limited means at their disposal their shacks are as homely as possible and the outdoor areas are often carefully tended. Il Masibambane College, istituto scolastico finanziato dal Comune di Vienna dal 1996, pi di una scuola. Oltre alle normali lezioni durante il giorno, la scuola svolge il ruolo di centro sociale per i residenti del sobborgo e organizza corsi serali di prima alfabetizzazione per gli adulti. Per il Masibambane College gli studenti hanno realizzato un edificio polifunzionale in grado di fornire un alloggio temporaneo agli insegnanti di passaggio e uninfermeria per alunni malati (due camere, ciascuna con

Masibambane College, an educational facility that has

been supported by the City of Vienna since 1996, is more than just a school. After lessons for the children during the day, in the evening adults from the neighborhood are taught how to read and write there. In addition, the school serves as a community center for the residents of the township. An open-air classroom with a stage completes the complex.

Ledificio, con una superficie complessiva di 250 mq, consiste di tre volumi che delimitano un cortile interno. that is based in Orange Farm, attempts to bring together disabled people and to employ them in the manufacture of handcraft products. The organization was given a site by the City of Johannesburg on which the students erected a day-care center with a sheltered workshop. The building, with a total floor area of 250 square meters, is broken up into three elements that define an internal courtyard. The work and common room is connected with the sanitary, storage and office spaces by large roofs. These in turn create areas
