Marketed as the ultimate luxury family hotel, the resort offers child-related activities as well. theres no doubt, however, that the Marriotts primary concern is pleasing the adults first. travis McIntyre worked in San Juan at the Arecibo Observatory for two years, and was a frequent visitor to the hotel. What I liked the most is the pool, its beautiful, he gushed. Indeed, when it isnt completely crowded, the pool is large enough for the serious swimmer to do laps, and for the not so serious swimmer to sip a cocktail by the swim-up bar. even so, this temperature-managed sanctuary isnt the only way to let your hair down.

Pine Cay is a privately owned, 825-acre island (about the size of Central Park) in the Caribbean. And on this paradise is the Meridian Cluba vacation resort that feels more like a bed and breakfast than Spring Break. When people are coming back here, when they return, its more like they are coming home. Its not like they are going to a hotel, said Beverly Plachta, one of the Meridians managers. Ms. Plachta runs the Meridian along with her husband of fifteen years, Wally Plachta. the two make their guests, those returning as well as those visiting for the first time, feel right at home. With the beach just a single step from each room and a bed so comfy you could lose yourself in it, its barefoot living at its finest. Where the tv would be, theres an old-fashioned map of Providenciales insteadI find it far more intriguing, wrote guest Gemma Handy in a love letter to the getaway. Meridians ban on all sorts of communicative technology may have New yorkers frantic with thoughts of abandoned responsibilities, but Beverly and her husband welcome the apprehension. Mothers and fathers seeking some quiet time alone might appreciate that the Club doesnt offer accommodations to children under twelve, except during family months in June and July and over the winter holiday season. you can either come here and be completely alone or socialize. Some people like it so they come and they dont have to see anybody. Or people who dont even know each other become best friends just because they dine together, said Ms. Plachta. theres no seating charts. People are encouraged to mingle and chat and share their experiences and most people who come here are likeminded so its easy for them to get together and have a good time. the Club also offers a range of activities from snorkeling and scuba diving to sailing and bone fishing. If these adventures dont make you feel at one with the great outdoors, the fact that Pine Cay is self-sufficient and eco-friendly certainly will. living in harmony with Mother Nature is a pervasive theme, from the real flowers in the folds of the towels to the tacit ban on plastica reusable shopping bag is left in each room along with a refillable water bottle, wrote Ms. Handy. Rainwater catchment systems are integrated in all buildings. theres even an outdoor shower. Just watch the prickly pine cones underfoot. the Meridian rests upon fresh water land. Drilling just 24 inches into the ground, the resort can access clean water without having to use the river. Cool island breezes mean there is no need for an AC. the only forms of transportation are bicycles and electric golf carts. the roads are paved with sand not cement, preserving Pine Cays habitat of iguanas and exotic birds. We are mostly undeveloped. We dont have anything here. Some people wonder why we dont overdevelop it. Its because we dont want to, Ms. Plachta explained. Since we started 38 years ago, guests who came then and come back now are glad that theres not that much of a change. Weve pretty much kept everything the same. But dont expect a bunch of shabby sheds on a beachfront. Ms. Plachta assures us, the Meridian Club is old style, not old. Contrary to the hyperactive minds of sci-fi heroes and villains, time travel doesnt require a complicated gadget or the disapproval of einsteins theory of relativity. Sometimes, a simple plane ticket will suffice. the Meridian Club in the turks & Caicos Islands is your getaway from it all. Remember a time when the Caribbean meant an understated old world charm? Ms. Handy mused. When traffic jams were as rare as a post office on the moon and comrades still addressed each other with formal titles? A time before amiable service was replaced by its obsequious counterpart. And before high rises shot up like meerkats in the desert and confined the horizon to a distant memory. When the world moved on and got itself in one big rush, it left Pine Cay behind.
