To honor and celebrate the California
Centennial of the Womens Right to Vote,
the League of Women Voters of Butte
County has secured a traveling Califor-
nia Centennial Exhibit, produced by the
International Museum of Women and the
California History Center Foundation, as
well as suffrage-era posters from Harvard
University, and will host a reception and
program for the public on Sunday, Decem-
ber 4 from 1-4 p.m. at the Durham Grange,
across the street from the post office at
2387 Durham/Dayton Hwy, just off the
intersection of Durham Pentz Road. The
public is invited to view the exhibit and
enjoy refreshments from 1-2 p.m. The
program will be from 2-3 p.m. with speak-
ers, including a living history portrayal
by Rosemary Quinn, as Elizabeth Cady
Stanton. Additional time for viewing the
exhibit and enjoying refreshments from
3-4 p.m. The event is in partnership with
the Durham Friends of the Library, the
Grange, Durham Community Foundation
Durham to Host Calif. Centennial
Womens Right to Vote Event
and both the Durham Womens Club and
the Community Womens Club..
Students will visit the exhibit during
pre-planned, scheduled hours during the
next two weeks, and the exhibit will be
available for additional public viewing
from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, December 10
and Sunday, December 11.
The exhibit will travel throughout the
county through March, 2012, and will be
in Paradise in January, in Gridley in late
January/early February, Butte Community
College for two weeks in February, and
then to CSU Chico campus for Womens
History Month in March. Receptions/dates
in those communities will be announced in
coming months.
Please join us in celebration and ap-
preciation of the thousands of women and
men who struggled for womens suffrage
since the mid-1800s. The county coor-
dinator for this exhibit is Eileen Burke-
Trent, and to get your organization or
school involved, call 846-4444 or email:

Licensed Contractors are required by State
law to list their license number in
advertisements. The law also states con-
tractors performing work totaling $500 or
more must be State licensed. Advertise-
ments appearing in this Publication without a

is not licensed. For more

NOTICE 900 NUMBERS!!
If you dial a telephone number with a 900
prex or 900 area code, there may be a

Smart Holiday
Shopping
(NAPSI)Holiday shopping can be a
breeze-with or without the assistance of
Santas little helpers. This year, more than
ever, people are looking for ways to get
the best value out of their holiday budget.
Dont have a posse of elves on hand to help
find the best deals? Thats OK. With a little
know-how, shopping this holiday season
can be as easy as one, two, three (or ho-
ho-ho).
Make a List. Now Check It Twice:
Create your list and begin your hunt for the
best deal. Have a favorite place to shop?
Some retailers offer price matching, which
means you can shop where you want and be
confident you are getting the best value.
Sweat the Small Stuff: Much of holi-
day gift giving focuses on big-ticket items
but sometimes the best gifts come in a
small package. Dont forget about those
great gifts that are $25 or less. If youre
still stumped, opt for a gift card.
Give Yourself the Gift of Conve-
nience: Lets face it, the holidays can be
stressful and expensive. So why not cut
a few corners? Look for free online ship-
ping and easy return options. Some stores
let you order online and pick up your order
the same day in-store. These offerings can
make a lot of difference, especially if you
are a last-minute shopper.
Gifting and Saving: Holiday shop-
ping on a budget doesnt mean missing out
on great gifts for everyone on your list. A
store like Best Buy prides itself on having
the seasons hottest selection of gifts that
will bring smiles to your friends and fam-
ily, while keeping your budget intact. Great
gifts under $100 include:
Rocketfish Mobile In-Ear Head-
phones
Sprint HTC EVO Design 4G Mobile
Phone
Sportline Step and Distance Pedom-
eter
Madden NFL 12 for XBOX
Griffin Technology Crayola ColorStu-
dio HD for Apple iPad and iPad 2
Kodak PlayFull Waterproof HD Pock-
et Camcorder
Gear4 Angry Birds Apple iPad 2 Case
Hello Kitty Over-the-Ear DJ Head-
phones
Amazon Kindle Touch
DeLonghi Pump Espresso Maker.
One last tip: Always buy a few small
gifts just in case someone drops by unan-
nounced or gives you a gift you did not
expect.
Now, take a deep breath and a giant sip
of eggnog, because you are ready to tackle
your holiday list.
This is not the Ophir
youre looking for.
Keep searching,
and try again.

Holiday News For
Savvy Spenders And

(NAPSI)Whether youre the fash-
ionista among your friends or aspiring
to be one, advice from Steve Kemble can
help.
To help make this years holiday shop-
ping experience the most fun yet, Kemble,
Americas sassiest lifestyle guru and Gen-
eral Growth Properties (GGP) gift-giving
expert, outlines his holiday shopping se-
crets and the hottest items of the season.
Dont Strip Your Wardrobe of Color:
Choose your favorite color to wearjust
tone down the hue. Think lavender and
rose.
Add Prints for a Splash of Excitement:
Prints add a pop of excitement to your hol-
iday getup. Try pairing a printed sweater
with a monotone and neutral-colored out-
fit. If you have the confidence, wear mul-
tiple patterns in one look.
Buy Two, Get the Third Free Deal:
Keep an eye out for Buy Two, Get the
Third Free or Buy One, Get the Second
Half Off sales and make your move. Just
be sure to have a list of everyone you plan
to buy for and how much you plan to spend
on each person. Dont forget co-workers,
teachers, neighbors and friends. By having
your list handy, youll be time efficient and
money conscious.
Personalize Your Gift: No matter what
youre giving, add your own touch to make
it even more special. You can personalize
almost anything. For example, for Mom,
choose an apron with a picture of the both
of you on it or a hanging calendar filled
with cherished family photos. For Dad,
personalize a sweatshirt with his favorite
college team or upload family memories to
a digital photo frame for his desk.
Plan Your Day to Save Time and
Money: Make a list of all the stores you
need to hit and plan your day so theres no
need to backtrack. Android and iPhone us-
ers can download GGPs free mobile app
The Club, which offers todays on-the-
go shopper real-time retail sales and mall
event updates, Google Maps naviga-
tion, live Facebook feeds, Shop Etc. gift
card balance updates, play-a-day games
and more. Download the free application
through the App Store or Android Mar-
ket by searching The Club Shopping Mall
Guide.
Give the Gift of Choice: Consider giv-
ing GGP Shop Etc. mall gift cards. It lets
your special gift recipients decide what
they really want most. They can buy that
hot new iPad theyve been eyeing or treat
themselves to a nice dinner. Become a
fan of your local GGP mall on Facebook.

Holiday Gifts That
Have The Personal
Touch
(NAPSI)A growing number of peo-
ple are finding that creating personalized
holiday gifts can help make gift giving
more meaningful-and economical.
Plus, since personalized gifts are made
with someone particular in mind, many be-
lieve its more likely the gift will be appre-
ciated and actually used by the recipient.
Easier Than Many Think
The good news is that creating person-
alized gifts that you would be proud to
give doesnt require years of crafting ex-
perience or a dedicated workshop.
Thats because Staples-a company that
is usually thought of as the source for of-
fice supplies-has so much more to offer
this holiday season. Staples Copy & Print
is equipped to help customers create a wide
variety of holiday items.
Holiday Cards
Holiday cards are an excellent way to
share your best wishes for the season and
the year to come- and a custom-made card
can help make your greeting even more
personal.
Fortunately, when it comes to creating
classic custom holiday cards, the experi-
enced Staples staff is prepared to help you
select from hundreds of holiday designs.
Cards can be created in minutes and print-
ed in store the same day. Its also possible
to order cards online and pick them up in
the store.
Traditional holiday cards made from
high-quality paper stock with embossing
and foil print options are also available.
They can be ordered online, as well, and
come with free standard delivery, person-
alization and logo placement-and satisfac-
tion is guaranteed.
Custom Calendars
When it comes to keeping fam-
ily, friends and associates on track and on
schedule, a custom calendar can be a fun,
easy and unique gift that stands out all year
long. You can even personalize it so the
person who gets it wont forget key dates
in the coming year.
Once again, Staples has hundreds of
designs available, and the calendar can be
ordered online and picked up in the store.
Photo Books
Many consider a photo book to be a
gift that can help to bring memories to
life. These are also available from Staples
Copy & Print, and customers can select
from more than 80 designs in either 4 x
6 or 5 x 7 sizes.
To learn more, visit the website at www.
staples.com.

Build A New Holiday
Tradition With
Gingerbread
(NAPSI)Sugar, spice and delecta-
bly nice! Few things can serve as a more
festive holiday centerpiece than a ginger-
bread house. Made popular by the Broth-
ers Grimm tale Hansel and Gretel, gin-
gerbread dwellings were created by bakers
as early as the 16th century. These charm-
ing holiday homes are absolute fun and the
perfect memory-making activity to share
with loved ones.
No time to bake gingerbread this sea-
son? No problem. Houses are easy to as-
semble and decorate with Pre-Baked Gin-
gerbread House Kits from Wilton, while
still providing the wonderfully spicy-sweet
taste and smell of gingerbread.
Theres a kit for every dream house
from a classic cottage to an intricate mini
village. Even pre-assembled kits are avail-
able, leaving extra time for decorating.
All thats needed to craft an ideal abode
is included in the kits and ready for fun
pre-baked gingerbread, a cardboard base,
icing, loads of colorful candies, an easy-
to-use decorating bag and tip, plus instruc-
tions. The kits even offer decorating ideas
or you can create your own design.
Decorating gingerbread houses brings
the whole family together for holiday cel-
ebrations. Adults can put the basic frame
structure together and watch kids have a
ball decorating with their favorite candies
to create rainbow roof tiles, festive holly
wreaths and playfully patterned window
designs. The results and memories will be
special.
Completed gingerbread projects will
amaze holiday guests while allowing cre-
ativity to shine. Everybody will enjoy the
beautiful creations and you will join in the
excitement by finding out just how great a
gift they can be for others.
So spread some good cheer by sharing a
holiday tradition that will bring joy all sea-
son long, and make sure to visit the leader
in food crafting at www.wilton.com for
more gingerbread ideas. While youre vis-
iting, check out the Ask Nancy podcasts
for step-by-step instructions for creating
beautiful treats anytime of year!

Helping Seniors
Celebrate The Season
(NAPSI)When celebrating the holi-
days this year, don't forget to check on el-
derly friends and family members. While
the holidays are a happy time for most
people, some seniors may find the season
less than festive.
The holidays can be difficult for a va-
riety of reasons. For many seniors, the
holidays are a reminder of parents, siblings
and friends who are no longer alive. For
others, the holidays are lonely, as relatives
with whom they might celebrate live far
away.
Also, seniors who are ill or disabled
may have difficulty getting out to shop or
taking part in religious observances and
seasonal festivities. And winter weather
can further complicate travel, isolating se-
niors from the companionship and social
interaction that are so essential to mental
health.
Even writing or reading a Christmas
card can be difficult if your vision is af-
fected.
If you can, call, send a card or bring
over a plate of cookies. At this time of the
year, seniors can derive extra benefit from
companion care. If you live far away or are
unable to provide that kind of attention,
you may consider companion care.
A companion can do more than remind
seniors about their medication and take care
of household responsibilities; he or she can
help make the holidays a little brighter. A
companion can help write cards, prepare
a festive meal and help decorate a home.
The companion can also help alleviate se-
niors' isolation by taking them out for sea-
sonal shopping and shipping, and helping
them to attend religious services and fes-
tive community events.
Before you decide on a companion care
agency, it's important for the agency to first
carefully assess the condition of the senior.
Ask the agencies you research which ser-
vices they will provide and how their care-
givers are selected and are scheduled.
Some agencies offer both companion
care and home care to seniors. For exam-
ple, Interim HealthCare, one of the leaders
in the home care industry, provides both
companion care (or nonmedical personal
care and support services) and medical
services to over 50,000 individuals nation-
wide.
Through trained health care profes-
sionals, Interim provides a broad array of
home care services including senior care
and physical, occupational and speech
therapy.
When should a senior get such care and
what kind does he or she need? The com-
pany offers a self-assessment test to help
families identify factors that may place
someone at home alone at risk.

pendentlivingassessment.com.

Free Annual Mistletoe Party At
Orovilles C.F. Lott Home Dec. 4
The Friends of the Parks and the City of Oroville are sponsoring a
festive mistletoe party at the historic C.F. Lott Home on Sunday, De-
cember 4 from noon until 4:00 p.m.
The Friends of the Parks renewed the annual event in 1970 to honor
the opening of the C.F. Lott Home to the public and to continue the
ageless tradition of the community gathering started by Judge Lott.
The group has been a main-stay in helping keep this historic home
open by spearheading many improvement projects with the help of
local service clubs including a catering kitchen for special events, new
paint, and the quaint gazebo to name a few.
The free fun afternoon is planned with bell ringers, holiday music
played by David Knox, cookies and punch and an opportunity to see
the gaily decorated historical home. Long-time docent and Friends
of the Parks member Janice Clay said We are fortunate to be able to
carry on this traditional event and to be able to share it with the com-
munity who will have a delightful holiday visit in an historic home.
The C.F. Lott Home in Sank Park is located at 1067 Montgomery
Street, Oroville. The home features two full oors of tastefully dis-
played period furnishings, a carriage house, caretakers cottage, pictur-
esque gazebo, and a full city block of manicured gardens.
Think Outside the Big Box This Holiday Season
Local businesses of all kinds are the lifeblood of a community. Without
our locally-owned, small businesses, we would be left with only the large,
national chains who have far fewer ties to our community. So, this holiday
season when it comes to buying gifts, take a moment to Think outside the
box. Here are some gift ideas I bet you never thought about.
How about a gym membership? Its appropriate for all ages and improves
health and well-being. Try Anytime Fitness or the Oroville Sports Club.
Who wouldnt appreciate getting their car detailed? Detail shops and car
washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.
Try Somppis Feather River Car Wash, Pastime Car Wash, or Hobbie Auto
Center.
Are you one of those extravagant givers? Maybe that gift receiver would like
his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed weekly or a tree removed. Check out The
Diggers Service Directory for tons of ideas.
How many people couldnt use an oil change for their car, truck or motor-
cycle, done at an Oroville shop run by a local mechanic? Take a look at S & S
Auto, Performance Auto or Hobbie Auto Center.
Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would love the services of a
local cleaning lady for a day or maybe you could pick up a great prime rib for
Christmas dinner at Foothill Meat Company or the Wagon Wheel Market.
How about going out to see a play or Community Concert at our State The-
atre or Birdcage Theatre? Maybe a movie gift certificate from Feather River
Cinema.
Not only will these gift ideas help our neighbors, but the money stays in our
community, and the taxes on money spent locally pay for police and fire protec-
tion, and help schools not being sent off via the internet or automobile to sup-
port another community.
Ok, you were looking for something more personal. Local artisans make
jewelry, pottery, beautiful wooden boxes and bowls not to mention water colors,
oils and acrylics. Stop in at the Artists of River Town Gallery & Gifts on Myers
Street in downtown Oroville. And if you think diamonds are a girls best friend,
youre in business. Downtown Oroville has three jewelry stores; Crown Jewelry
Co., Marcozzi Jewelers and Sierra Gem Co.
By purchasing locally, you get hometown service. Its nice to be able to pick
up the phone and get an actual person on the line or walk into a place and get
help from the same person who sold you the item. Betty Jeans womens cloth-
ing store and Gallery Interiors both on Bird Street have made their living for
years, by offering personal service.
Have dinner at a local restaurant. Theres something to be said about walk-
ing into a place, where somebody knows your name.
Stumped on exactly what to give? Think Gift
Certificates! Every local store has gift certificates.
Pick the dollar amount you want to give, and let
the person you are gifting make the final selec-
tion.
This year, think outside the big box stores,
when you do your gift giving. There are more gift
ideas in small, locally-owned businesses than
you ever imagined.
I hope you will join me in patronizing local-
ly-owned businesses of all kinds this holiday
season. Because its not just another busi-
ness, its our local economy.

How To Stay Safe
Online This
Holiday Season
(NAPSI)Many people look forward
to holidays as a time to spend with friends
and family, load up on Moms turkey and
sing their favorite holiday jingles. For
savvy shoppers, this time of year also of-
fers a chance to take advantage of major
discounts, whether youre buying gifts for
loved ones or yourself.
However, lured by the promise of get-
ting the must-have toy of the season or the
latest tech gadget at half the price, bargain
hunters all too often fall for online scams
to steal their personal and financial infor-
mation. Although online shopping contin-
ues to be a popular an easy way for people
to get their holiday shopping done, it can
also open the door to scams from sneaky
cybercrooks.
According to Norton, the leading on-
line security company, holiday e-mails
with taglines like You Have Received a
Christmas Greeting Card! and Cash for
the New Year have already started ap-
pearing in peoples in-boxes. Although the
messages can seem harmless, they may
contain viruses and worms that will dam-
age your computer or, worse, send you to
websites designed to steal your e-mail and
bank account information.
In fact, Norton recently found that 73
percent of Americans have been victims of
cybercrime in their lifetimes. Follow these
tips to stay safe this season:
Check your list twiceIf you receive
a suspicious e-mail, whether its offering
discounts that are too good to be true or is
filled with grammatical errors, delete the
message. It could be part of a scam to trick
you into downloading a virus or giving
away your personal information.
Find out which websites are naugh-
ty and niceWhen conducting trans-
actions online, make sure the website ad-
dress contains httpswhich indicates an
added layer of protection. Also, scan the
entire Web page for a trust mark, such as
the VeriSign Trust Seal. These marks dem-
onstrate that a trusted company has taken
comprehensive measures to certify secu-
rity, online business ethics and customer
privacy standards.
Dont let scams turn your Black Fri-
day into the bluesUse trusted online
security software, like Norton Internet Se-
curity 2012 or a mobile solution like Nor-
ton Mobile Security, to make sure youre
protected against online threats and help
ensure safe shopping, from home or on the
go, this season.

safe online, please visit www.Norton.com.

(NAPSI)Creating great-tasting holi-
day treats doesnt have to mean giving up
a healthful lifestyle. A little ingenuity and
some wholesome ingredients can go a long
way toward continuing to follow a healthy
diet and still enjoy traditional baked goods-
deliciously.
Baking Ideas
To make your holiday recipes healthier,
try these tips:
Go with the grainsUse whole grains
such as wheat, flax and oats instead of
all-purpose flour. Theyre generally glu-
ten- free and can help you meet your fiber
needs.
Bake it without a grain of saltRe-
duce sodium in your baked goods with un-
salted butter and low- sodium baking pow-
der. A reduced salt intake can lower blood
pressure and prevent hypertension, say
the experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. When oil cannot
be substituted, unsalted butter is one alter-
native to lower your salt intake; and you
can now get a low-sodium baking powder
thats gluten-free and has no trans fats.
Plus, although it has less than half the so-
dium of ordinary baking powder, the new
offering from Rumford is a 1:1 replace-
ment and guaranteed to produce light and
fluffy cakes, breads, pancakes and more.
Be fruitfulor at least let your pastries
be full of fruit, such as antioxidant-rich
pumpkin. You may like to try this healthful
twist on a holiday season favorite:
Pumpkin Mandelbrot With Cinnamon
Sugar
cup unsalted butter
1 cups light brown sugar, packed
cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
cup pumpkin puree
1 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
teaspoon cinnamon
teaspoons cloves
3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons Rumford Reduced Sodium
Baking Powder
teaspoon baking soda
Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
1 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a large
baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl, combine butter, sug-
ars, eggs and pumpkin. Stir in spices, 3
cups of the flour, Rumford Reduced So-
dium Baking Powder and baking soda. Stir
in more flour as required to make a stiff
but soft batter. Using floured hands, spread
dough out on the baking sheet into 2 logs
about 3 inches and 67 inches long.
Bake 3550 minutes until the log is set
and dry to the touch. Cool well and lower
oven temperature to 325F. Cut into di-
agonal cookies (about 30 pieces). Place
cookies back on sheet and bake to crisp up
cookies, about 2030 minutes. Cool well
and then toss cookies in cinnamon sugar (a
paper bag works well, just gently shake to
coat cookies).
Makes about 3 dozen.

What To Wear In Your Family Holi-
day Photo
With the holidays approaching, its
time to gussy
up your family,
book time with
the local photog-
rapher and pick
the photo youll
display for your
annual holiday
cards.
No doubt youll
want a photo
that shows off
your family, and
the clothing you
choose to wear in your photo can make
or break your holiday card. But with
a little planning, you can be sure your
family will look its best.
The right photo with the right card
design can make all the difference and
add a real wow factor to your holi-
day card, said Mariam Naficy, CEO
of Minted.com, the online stationery
store.
Here are tips to make sure your holi-
day photo brings out the best in your
family:
Darks vs. Lights: Wear dark cloth-
ing colors on photos set in areas with
light backgrounds, and light clothing
for photos set in areas with dark back-
grounds. The contrast helps ensure your
family isnt washed out in the photo.
Casual = Natural: Go casual (es-
pecially with kids) to ensure a natural-
looking photo -- and happy faces! There
is nothing worse than a staged photo
shoot gone wrong due to uncomfortable
outfits and poses. Sometimes an action
photo, such as one showing everybody
walking towards the camera, will pro-
duce a more natural-looking result than
when everyone is forced to stand still.
Keep It Simple: Avoid patterns
or busy clothing that may
conflict with the
card design or be
hard on the eyes.
Or, if you have a
complex photo,
pick a simple
card design. You
can find a vari-
ety of decora-
tive and simple
Christmas cards
online at sites
like Minted.com.
Complement Each Other: Choos-
ing clothing that is complementary,
rather than matching, will bring the
photo together in a natural way. For ex-
ample, each family member can wear a
bright, bold hue against a white back-
ground. And as a general rule, identical
outfits only look cute on little children.
Leave Some Room: Tightly cropped
photos leave little to work with if the
photo needs adjustment for spacing. Al-
low some breathing room in your photo
edges. Plus, many great holiday cards
feature text to one side, so take some
photos to the far left or far right.
More tips on creating a great holiday
photo and card can be found at www.
minted.com.
Above all, relax and enjoy the mo-
ment. This way, your smiles will warm
the homes of many relatives and loved
ones.

CALL ME
The
Newcomer
I am full of Turkey, Dressing, Pumpkin
pie, and Gratitude ... The turkey, dressing,
and pumpkin pie are symbolic of a fantastic
Thanksgiving Dinner. My gratitude is how I
feel about having a roof over my head, food
in the refrigerator, and delightful neighbors
with whom to share the bounty. I feel humble
for having made so many wonderful friends
through this column, and since moving to
Oroville four years ago.
That brings to mind my goal in writing this
column: Remind you to SHOP LOCALLY
and support the community in which you live
and/or work. Why? Because it makes sense,
and Oroville is a fun place to shop. Remem-
ber, The Fun Starts Here! (In Oroville, the
town with a gigantic heart.)
It was a thrill to this Newcomer to learn
that Feather Falls Casino purchased 500 tur-
keys to donate to Orovilles Rescue Mission,
who had 600 needy families on their list. I
was even more excited when I found out they
had purchased all the turkeys locally. (Food
Max)
Now, like others who live in this family-
friendly community, I am looking forward to
First Friday (Dec 2nd) in Historical Down-
town Oroville. (Not Black Friday, as in out-
of-town shopping malls.) Ill not only save
gas and miss the crowds, but Ill get my pic-
ture taken with Santa Claus and enjoy a very
special carriage ride. Then, of course, I can
follow the Carolers, or meet up with them
at the lighting of the Community Christmas
Tree. If you come early, take advantage

est shops in town, and I am told the prices are
reasonable and the inventory would thrill any
young lady. (O.K. Grandma, thats a hint.)
