Cairns Base Hospital
Cairns Base Hospital provides community and specialist hospital services for Cairns and its immediate surroundings and is the major referral centre for Tropical North Queensland. Services include all major health specialties (medicine, surgery, womens health, paediatrics and mental health) and more than 30 subspecialties. The hospital also is a major provider of outreach specialist services to remote and rural areas, including obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthetics, orthopaedics, general medicine, renal medicine, diabetes and thoracic medicine. The hospital has around 330 overnight beds. In June 2002, a seven-year $130 million redevelopment program was completed at Cairns Base Hospital, substantially upgrading the health facilities and services available for Far Northerners.

Cairns Base Hospital Redevelopment


The current $446.3 million redevelopment of Cairns Base Hospital will provide an additional 168 beds (overnight and same day beds) by the end of 2014, bringing the total to 531 beds. The redeveloped Cairns Base Hospital will also provide improved health services including:

an ambulatory cancer care centre with a new radiation oncology service additional cardiac care facilities additional surgical capacity including day surgery expanded intensive care capacity expanded birthing services, special care babies unit and a new low risk birth centre additional aged care and rehabilitation services additional beds for mental health services new pathology facilities.

District Information
Location - The city of Cairns is located 1,807 kms North of Brisbane and about 350 kms North of Townsville

Climate - Cairns, like all tropical regions, has a warmish climate. In cooler months temperatures can drop to around 17C. The warmer months generally experience temperatures in the low to mid 30s. The rainy months tend to be December to April, when the waterfalls and rivers really flow. June to October experience the lowest rainfalls.

The People / Socio Demographics - Cairns is home to approximately 143,000 people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This adds to the cosmopolitan feel of the place. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as South Pacific Islanders maintain strong links to the area. Most denominations are catered for. All major service organizations are active in Cairns. There is also a Royal Flying Doctor base located here.

Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District The Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District covers an area of about 142,900 sq kms from Tully and Cardwell in the south to the Daintree in the north and west to Croydon. The population of this area is about 240,000. As the referral hospital for the whole of Far North Queensland, Cairns Base Hospital serves a broader population of about 264,000.
