Textile

is all about aesthetics & feel. Clothes are becoming more powerful medium of natural human expressions. Natural & vibrant colours on textile pleases one who wears it & the observer as well. Different feels like soft, cosy, wet, dry & resilient satisfies senses of user.

It becomes more challenging for textile finishers to satisfy natural urge of consumer to feel good. With number of finishing agents, textilefinishing personnel are juggling to modify the surface feel of the fabric. Silicones are one among all functional chemicals.

spinning and winding of yarns and sewing lubricants. Silicone softeners generally consist of linear aminopolydimethylsiloxanes. The feel & functionality of silicones mainly depends on number of factors as mentioned below: 1. Chain length: In amino polydimethylsiloxanes (Si-O-Si)n the value of n in the polysiloxanes determines that silicone can be in highly fluid state or viscous form. 2. Particle size: In silicone emulsions, the particle size determines whether the emulsions are transparent, opalescent or milky in appearance. In micro emulsions, the particle diameter is less than 50 nm and these emulsions are transparent. In macro emulsions, the particle diameter is more than 120 nm; these emulsions are milky. The type of feel majorly depends on type of emulsions used during finishing stage. Micro emulsions ensure better penetration between the fibres and lower the interfibre friction. Macro emulsions deposits on fibre surface and generates surface softness. 3. Structure and mode of action: In polydimethysilicone, the pendant methyl groups are arranged on outer side of linear siloxane chain. As methyl groups are hydrophobic in nature resulting softeners are hydrophobic in nature and possesses an affinity for soil. In aminosilicone, amino group makes the silicone easier to emulsify in water. The amino functional side groups results in optimum distribution on cellulosics fibre surface and results in better softness. The cationic amino groups form stable ionic bond with carboxylate group of cellulose and it decreases the solubility of the silicone polymers results in durable wash proof smoothness.

Silicones

are polysiloxanes (Si-O-Si)n produced by treating silicone metal to give mixture of silanes (Si-C) which condensed with water. These silicones used in textile as softeners, anti foaming agent, wetting agent & water repellents; they also find use as lubricants in

To impart hydrophilic property to silicones the polyethylene oxide or polyglycol is introduced into the aminosilicone molecule.
