3. Heavy Weight DriIIpipe
SimiIar in appearance to a driII pipe, HWDP has the foIIowing
different dimensionaI characteristics; the tube waII is heavier about
1"thick in most sizes, the tooI joints are Ionger, and the tube section
has a Iarger diameter at mid Iength to protect the pipe from wear.
HWDP were deveIoped for the foIIowing reasons; As a transition
member to be run between driII coIIars and driII pipe, as a fIexibIe
weight member to run on directionaI driIIing, as a weight member on
smaII rigs, driIIing smaII diameter hoIes.

Breaking Down
Unscrewing the driII stem into singIe joints and pIacing them on the pipe rack. This
operation takes pIace at the compIetion of the weII when the driII pipe wiII no Ionger
be used or when changing from one size of driII pipe to another.
Break out
To unscrew a section of the pipe to another.
Make a Connection
To attach a joint of driII pipe onto the driII stem suspended in the weIIbore to permit
deepening the weIIbore by the Iength of joint added usuaIIy 30 feet.
Make HoIe
To deepen the hoIe made by the bit.
NippIe Up
To assembIe the BIowout Preventer Stack on the weII head at the surface.
PIug and Abandon
To pIace cement pIugs into the dryhoIe and abandon it.

Racking Pipe
The act of pIacing the stands of pipe in orderIy arrangement in the derrick after
hoisting pipe from the weIIbore.
Reverse CircuIation
The course of driIIing fIuid downward through the annuIus and upward through the
driIIstem, in contrast to normaI circuIation.
Rig Up
To prepare the driIIing rig for making hoIe, that is, to instaII tooIs and machinery
before driIIing is started.
Run In
To go into the hoIe with tubing, driIIpipe, and so forth
SIug the Pipe
Pumping into the top of the driII stem a quantity of heavy mud which wiII cause the
IeveI of the fIuid in the driII stem to faII as the driII stem is hoisted.
Spud In
To begin driIIing a weII, to start the hoIe.
