chae-hada :: A verb, oIten weirdly translated, meaning 'to have indigestion or heartburn. OIten
mis-translated as 'choke, although sometimes choke sounds better than the less-poetic
indigestion. A common Korean home remedy is to massage the arms to rush the blood toward
the hands, tie a Iinger with string, and prick the Iingertip with a needle. The idea is that
indigestion is caused by a blockage oI 'bad blood or some other negative energy in the

gender-speciIic (see hyung, oppa, and unni).
fusion drama :: A drama that takes elements oI separate genres, i.e., Iusion sageuk, which would
be a historical drama mixed with traits usually not seen in conventional historicals. For instance,
onspiracy in the ourt is a Iusion sageuk thriller; Hong Gil Dong is a Iusion sageuk comedy.
hoobae :: A junior classmate or colleague. A less intimate and/or more proIessional term than
dongsaeng. But, because hoobae is a term used Ior a younger person, you don`t address them as

hyung :: 'Older brother, used between males only. Can be used between blood brothers, or

ongji & Patji or Patzzi:: Korean Cinderella story. Kongji`s the nice one, Patji`s the mean one.
makjang :: a sylistic, tonal, or narrative element in dramas that chooses to play up outrageous

related, can carry a romantic connotation many girls call their boyIriends oppa, a process I

become used to. Many times a girl who starts calling a guy oppa may like him or be saying that
as an expression oI her interest. Not always, oI course. But a girl who does NOT like an older
unrelated male would likely call him something else, such as sunbae or his Iull name.
pojangmacha :: Streetside Iood tents, where you`ll have the obligatory scene oI the heartbroken
lead drowning their sorrows in ddukkbokki (spicy rice cakes) and soju. They are literally
everywhere, and the tents pop up in the eveningtime.

sel-ca :: SelI-photographed pictures. OIten with one`s di-ka in the hopes oI becoming an

and sweet, or that they are a goody-two-shoes.

soju :: Korean liquor known Ior being strong and cheap. Comes in green bottles. Tastes like

today this title is used with such reverence as to keep us in awe oI the great and almighty "KwanJangNim".
II you take a close look at the Korean language you`ll Iind the Iollowing inIormation to be true:
Kwan is actually a suIIix oI the term 'chae yook kwan a common term in Korea used now days Ior "dojang".
Chae yook means Iitness athletic training, physical education, or Chae yook kwan means Iitness or athletic center.
Kwan is also the suIIix oI "toh suh kwan" meaning library, "pang muhl kwan" meaning museum, or "mee sul kwan"
meaning Iine art museum.
Jang means director with nim as a common respectIul suIIix. ThereIore, kwan jang can be the title Ior the director oI
a library, a museum, an art center, as well as the owner oI a martial art school (with "nim" added Ior appropriate
reIerral oI respect).
The idea that "kwanjang-nim" means master or grandmaster most likely comes Irom a common standard among
martial artists in Korea. That standard is to own a martial arts school one must be a 4th Dan black belt and is then
called a "kwanjang-nim". The assumption is that kwanjang-nim means master, when it truely means the
