SYNOPSIS FOR ARCHITECTURE THESIS

TITLES A STORY
Previous one month has been very hectic. Kids had their exams. The semester was ending at my institute and it took a lot of my time. My son had his coaching started and we were busy with that. All this added so much on us that we could not relax. I am bored and need a break. I want to spend a day in a manner that I feel rejuvenated at the end of it.

EXAMPLE FROM ARCHITECTURE

Commercial architecture is heavily influenced by the image its form portrays. Its conception, probably, starts with images of forms in the mind of the architect. This, obviously, clashes with basic approach taught to architects, Form Follows Function. Is this point of contradiction in the design conceptualization? Can there be a balance of approach to design where form and function go hand in hand? Explore design conceptualization with options of iconic form and balanced with function in the design of an IT office.

DEFINITION
A question/ concern/ an idea come into your mind. Why do we do this?; Why dont we try approaching Architectural Design this way?; Can we have a composite structure for building of this scale?; What is the optimum combination of active and passive energy control mechanisms in energy intensive buildings?, etc. The idea that you are exploring/ trying which could not be explored in the previous designs or a new idea that is a necessity of the time, etc. done through a design exercise. The building chosen for design becomes merely a tool to explore/ try/ verify the new idea. Its a breakup of the main aims into smaller aims. These smaller aims are the objectives.

WHAT IS NOT

NEED

AIM

I have to clear Thesis subject with GOOD marks is not an AIM (that may be there deep in your heart).

OBJECTIVES

Ill have to check on the following: Find all options available for me to do today Decide on the time available to do all things List my chores for the day. Decide on places to go and things to do Plan for each event (for e.g. book ticket for movie in advance)

Understand various approaches to architectural design. Understand trends in forms in architectural built forms in different periods. Understand how technology has played a role in realization of iconic/ monumental architectural forms. Shortlist technologies available in India in the given context. Understand design requirements for an IT office building. Study similar projects to understand their design approach. Decide on design strategy to be adopted. Implement the same for design solution. Details on joinery in structural systems will be dealt superficially. The requirements may need design of more than

For example Literature survey and Case study are not objectives, but what will come out of that may be your objective and that is why you did those exercises.

SCOPE

It seems I will be able to do only the following: Meet my friends

Scope defines the quantum of work that you will undertake in the given time (in our case one semester) so that

Scope is Limitations.

TITLES

A STORY
Movie at Fun Cinema Spend my time at Cross words looking for new books Ice cream at the Top and town in the DB food court Cultural evening at the Bhopal Haat Im not sure if the ticket for one movie will be available. Play at BB will not encourage interaction with family. My sons are not interested in play. I may have to encourage them into it. Hopefully I will have a GR8 day!!!

EXAMPLE FROM ARCHITECTURE

one block of building. The design strategy will be limited to one block of scale appropriate as per thesis requirement.

DEFINITION
proper justice may be done to the aim.

WHAT IS NOT

LIMITATION

Exact case study may not be available. This may, thus, require more than 2 case studies to cover all relevant topics. I may also have to rely on desk appraisal of foreign projects.

These are conditions which are the odds against which the work shall be done.

EXPECTED OUTCOME
Check Fig. 1

Design of a built form that has a balance of, both, iconic form and functionality.

METHODOLOGY

A road map/ flow chart depicting how you will start the work with a set AIM; undertake intermediate tasks to meet the OBJECTIVES; finally achieve the AIM. It is a Flow Chart since it shows interdependencies and linkages of tasks and the sequence they would follow.

Scope is not limitation. Common mistake people make Ill be designing only one block out of the 3 blocks required. The set of drawings of the project is not the expected outcome. It is not a prose or a continuous text.
