Fundamentals of Ritual Series The Star Ruby

Presented by Frater A Ka Dua at Knights Templar Oasis Monday, August 22nd in 2 in Anno IVxix The Star Ruby: Part of the Magick in Theory & Practice series
(http://www.thelemapedia.org/index.php/The_Star_Ruby) The Star Ruby is a ritual written by Aleister Crowley who described it as a new and more elaborate version of the Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. It is a Class D document (official ritual) of the AA It first appeared in print with the publication of The Book of Lies in 1913 E.V. Disciples at the Abbey of Thelema in Cefalu performed the ritual as part of their daily practices, along with Will and Liber Resh. The ritual was later modified somewhat and released in 1929 E.V. as an appendix of Magick in Theory and Practice (Magick, Book 4, Part III). Built up from the traditional Lesser Pentagram Ritual of the Golden Dawn, while similar in some aspects, the Star Ruby also has many significant differences in its structure; for example, using Greek instead of Hebrew intonations; similarly, while its predecessor is suitable for both invoking and banishing elemental forces, the Star Ruby is exclusively a banishing ritual.

1. This is one of the official rituals of the A:.A:. It was first published by Frater Perdurabo in 1913 e.v., in a somewhat different form, as Chapter XXV of Liber CCCXXXIII, The Book of Lies. It was published in revised form in 1929 e.v. in Appendix VI of Book 4, Part III: Magick in Theory and Practice. In his commentary to Chapter XXV of The Book of Lies, Crowley described this ritual as "a new and more elaborate version of the Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram." My notes and comments are unofficial and informal. They represent my personal opinions based on my own studies. The term "Phallus" may be interpreted, in Crowley's words, as the "immortal principle" of either a man or a woman. It is the Principle of Life, continuously renewing itself through the cycle of death and generation. IAO is the Gnostic form of the Tetragrammaton, IHVH. The individual letters Iota, Alpha, and Omega represent the Essence, the Beginning, and the End, respectively. Thus, IAO is the equivalent of the Hebrew phrase, le-Olahm, Amen in the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram. It is also a Divine Name of the sphere of Tiphareth, corresponding to the heart. Therion, Nuit, Babalon and Hadit are divine names from the Holy Books of Thelema. The Signs of Horus and of Hoor-paar-Kraat (Harpocrates) are shown in Figure 33A,B on page 606 of Magick: Liber ABA, Book Four, Parts I-IV by Aleister Crowley, Samuel Weiser 1994. In classical terminology, a "paian" was a song of praise, especially to Apollo. In this case, the paian is to the Great God Pan, where PAN may be translated as "All." Also, the five letters I.O.P.A.N. correspond to the five N.O.X. signs, which are shown in Figure 33L-P on page 607 of Magick. The Iynges (singular "Iynx"), Synoches, Teletarches and Daemones are divine principles from the Second Order of the emanationist hierarchy of late Neoplatonism, based on the Chaldean Oracles of Zoroaster. Their position in the Neoplatonist hierarchy is intermediate between the "intelligible" world, or world of ideation, and the "sensible" world, or world of perception. Their functions are, respectively, as "initiators," "maintainers," "perfectors," and "executors" of the Divine Creative Impulse which originates in the intelligible world and ultimately manifests in the sensible world. Further information on them may be found in the published editions of the Chaldean Oracles edited by W. Wynn Wescott and G.R.S. Mead, and in the works of Proclus, Damascius, Michael Psellus, George Gemistos Plethon, and other late Neoplatonist philosophers.

Then dashing down the hand with a great sweep back and out, expelling forcibly thy breath, cry: . With the same forefinger touch thy forehead, and say , thy member, and say 7, thy right shoulder, and say , thy left shoulder, and say ; then clasp thine hands, locking the fingers, and cry . Advance to the East. Imagine strongly a Pentagram aright, in thy forehead. Drawing the hands to the eyes, fling it forth, making the sign of Horus, and roar . Retire thine hand in the sign of Hoor pa kraat. Go round to the North and repeat; but scream . Go round to the West and repeat; but say . Go round to the South and repeat; but bellow . Completing the circle widdershins, retire to the centre, and raise thy voice in the Paian, with these words with the signs of N.O.X. Extend the arms in the form of a Tau, and say low but clear: . Repeat the Cross Qabalistic, as above, and end as thou didst begin. COMMENTARY () 25 is the square of 5, and the Pentagram has the red colour of Geburah. The chapter is a new and more elaborate version of the Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. It would be improper to comment further upon an official ritual of the AA

Phallus
http://www.thelemapedia.org/index.php/Phallus

The phallus most often refers to the physical male genitalia, although in some cases it can refer to the clitoris, or the labia majora and labia minora of a female during fetal development, or to the male and female genitalia conjoined, or to the organ before sexual differentiation is evident. In its symbolic sense, it is an expression of the active generative power which is inherent in both men and women. It is often represented as an erect penis, although other possible symbols are the cross, the winged globe, the Sun, and the wand. Arguably, the most basic Thelemic attribution of the phallus is Will. Aleister Crowley stated it most clearly in "The Gun-Barrel" in The Book of Lies: Mighty and erect is this Will of mine, this Pyramid of fire whose summit is lost in Heaven. Upon it have I burned the corpse of my desires. Mighty and erect is this Phallus of my Will. The seed thereof is That which I have borne within me from Eternity; and it is lost within the Body of Our Lady of the Stars. I am not I; I am but an hollow tube to bring down Fire from Heaven. Mighty and marvellous is this Weakness, this Heaven which draweth me into Her Womb, this Dome which hideth, which absorbeth, Me. This is The Night wherein I am lost, the Love through which I am no longer I.

Crowley also identified the phallus with the dying god, such as Osiris, Dionysus, or Jesus. This is based on the nature of the physical male penis, which becomes flaccid (or "dies") after it has reached ejaculation. On the symbolic level, this can be interpreted as a god giving life followed by his own death. As Crowley wrote in The Vision and the Voice, "[The Pyramid] is also the phallus, which dies itself to communicate life to others."

He states this poetically in "The Sabbath of the Goat," the first chapter from The Book of Lies: O! the heart of N.O.X. the Night of Pan. PAN: Duality: Energy: Death. Death: Begetting: the supporters of O! To beget is to die; to die is to beget. Cast the Seed into the Field of Night. Life and Death are two names of A. Kill thyself. Neither of these alone is enough.

Crowley explains: The shape of the figure I suggests the Phallus; this chapter is therefore called the Sabbath of the Goat, the Witches' Sabbath, in which the Phallus is adored. Quotes from Crowley "The Holy Guardian Angel is the Unconscious Creature Selfthe Spiritual Phallus." ("Liber Samekh," Pt.II, Sec.A) "And Teth means a Serpent, the symbol of the magical Life of the Soul, lord of "the double wand" of life and death. The serpent is royal, hooded, wise, silent save for an hiss when need is to disclose his Will; he devours his tailthe glyph of Eternity, of Nothingness and of Space; he moves wavelike, one immaterial essence travelling through crest and trough, as a man's soul through lives and deaths. He straightens out; he is the Rod that strikes, the Light-radiance of the Sun or the Life radiance of the Phallus." (The Equinox of the Gods, Ch.7) "The caduceus contains a complete symbol of the Gnosis; the winged sun or phallus represents the joy of life on all planes from the lowest to the highest." (Confessions, Ch.74) "...the only rational God is the Sun, who is in the Macrocosm what the Phallus is in the Microcosm." ("The Gospel According to Saint Bernard Shaw") "[The Sun's] vice-regent and representative in the animal kingdom is His cognate symbol the Phallus, representing Love and Liberty." (The Law is for All, p. 163)

Primordial Deity As an example of anthropological study discussing the phallus or lingam in terms of a symbol containing both organs, here is a quote from Payne-Knight's A Discourse on the Worship of Priapus: The first and greatest of these [attributes of the primordial deity], the creative or generative attribute, seems to have been originally represented by the union of the male and female organs of generation, which, under the title of the Lingam, still occupies the central and most interior recesses of [the Hindus'] temples or pagodas; and is also worn, attached to bracelets, round their necks and arms. In a little portable temple brought from the Rohilla country during the late war, and now in the British Museum, this composition appears mounted on a pedestal, in the midst of a square area, sunk in a block of white alabaster. Round the pedestal is a serpent, the emblem of life, with his head rested upon his tail, to denote eternity, or the constant return of time upon itself, whilst it flows through perpetual duration, in regular revolutions and stated periods. From under the body of the serpent springs the lotus or water lily, the Nelumbo of Linnus, which overspreads the whole of the area not occupied by the figures at the corners. ...We accordingly find [the lotus] employed in every part of the northern hemisphere, where the symbolical religion, improperly called idolatry, does or ever did prevail. The sacred images of the Tartars, Japonese [sic], and Indians, are almost all placed upon it ... The upper part of the base of the Lingam also consists of this flower, blended and composed with the female organ of generation which it supports: and the ancient author of the Bagvat Geeta speaks of the creator Brahma as sitting upon his lotus throne. The figures of Isis, upon the Isiac Table, hold the stem of this plant, surmounted by the seed-vessel in one hand, and the cross, representing the male organs of generation, in the other; thus signifying the universal power, both active and passive, attributed to that goddess. On the same Isiac Table is also the representation of an Egyptian temple, the columns of which are exactly like the plant which Isis holds in her hand ... Richard Payne Knight http://www.thelemapedia.org/index.php/Richard_Payne_Knight Richard Payne Knight (1750-1824) was a Classical scholar and connoisseur best known for his interest in ancient phallic imagery and for his theories of picturesque beauty. He was born at Wormesley Grange in Herefordshire and was educated at home, but toured Italy and the continent from 1867 for several years. He was a collector of ancient bronzes and coins, a Member of Parliament from 1780-1806, and an author of numerous book and articles on ancient sculpture, coins and other artefacts. As a member of the Society of Dilettanti, Knight was widely considered to be an arbiter of taste. He bequethed his collection of bronzes, coins, gems, marbles, and drawings to the British Museum. Notoriously, Knight's first book, The Worship of Priapus, sought to recover the importance of ancient phallic cults. Knight's apparent preference for ancient sacred eroticism over Judeo-Christian puritanism led to many attacks on him as an infidel and as a scholarly apologist for libertinism. This ensured the persistent distrust of the religious establishment. The central claim of The Worship of Priapus was that an international religious impulse to worship the generative principle was articulated through genital imagery, and that this imagery has persisted into the modern age. In some ways the book was the first of many later attempts to argue that Pagan ideas had persisted within Christian culture, a view that would eventually crystalise into the neo-Pagan movement over a century later.

IAO
http://www.thelemapedia.org/index.php/IAO IAO is considered to be both a gnostic godform and a magical formula. IAO (iota, alpha, omega) was the Greek form of the Tetragrammaton, IHVH (Yod-He-Vau-He, or Jehova, the Bringer of Light), the Hebrew divine name for God. Although a reference to Jahova (or Yahweh), IAO was also widely associated with both Hermes and Bacchus (Iacchus), especially in ancient magical texts and amulets. As a gnostic godform, IAO is both a sungod and mystery-god. IAO as a magical formula The basic formula of IAO is one of life, death, and rebirth. In Magick (1997, Ch. 5), Aleister Crowley states that IAO is the principal and most characteristic formula of Osiris, of the Redemption of Mankind. "I" is Isis, Nature, ruined by "A", Apophis the Destroyer, and restored to life by the Redeemer Osiris. He also refers to it as the formula of yoga, as illustrated by the initial pleasure of this practice, followed by the inevitable agony, and finally resulting in a new, superior state, perhaps similar to, yet fundamentally different from the initial state. Crowley draws many parallelsnamely the formula LVX, alchemy, Jesus Christ, and Prometheus. In yet another example, Crowley says that IAO is the formula of all learning: You begin with a delightful feeling as of a child with a new toy; you get bored, and you attempt to smash it. But if you are a wise child, you have had a scientific attitude towards it, and you do not smash it. You pass through the stage of boredom, and arise from the inferno of torture towards the stage of resurrection, when the toy has become a god, declared to you its inmost secrets, and become a living part of your life. There are no longer these crude, savage reactions of pleasure and pain. The new knowledge is assimilated. (Eight Lectures On Yoga, Fourth Lecture) Ceremonially, IAO can be illustrated by the act of robing yourself as a king, then stripping and slaying yourself, and rising from that death to the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel (Crowley, 1997). It is important to note that Crowley (1997) believed that the formula of IAO had been replaced by that of Horus, who gave us his two formulae, Thelema and Abrahadabra. IAO is the formula of magick. It is the way things reproduce and recreate themselves through extension and specialization. (The Book of Wisdom and Folly, 1988) I represents the monad or the phallus. Its actions do not produce change within, but only out of itself. O represents the yoni or the female, which changes through addition, subtraction or multiplication. It represents matter that is capable of taking on form. The union of the I and the O would create the triad, or the world formed by the two creative principals out of matter. A would then represent the conjunction between these two principles.

Attributing the Elements to the Four Directions in Liber XXV, the Star Ruby By Frater Sabazius, X
http://hermetic.com/sabazius/starruby.htm

There are at least three ways to attribute the elements to the four directions in the Star Ruby. Use the directions for vocalizing the God Names: East = Roar = Lion = Leo = Fire, North = Scream = Eagle = Scorpio = Water, West = Say = Man = Aquarius = Air, South = Bellow = Bull = Taurus = Earth. This corresponds to the orientation of the fixed signs of the Zodiac and one of the ways of looking at the four Sephiroth around the intersection of the paths of Samech and Pe -- Tiphereth = Light = Fire in the East, Yesod = Air in the West, Hod = Water in the North, Netzach = Green = Earth in the South. Same as above, but attribute the Eagle to Air and the Man to Water, in accordance with the method of Levi and most earlier writers. This corresponds to the attributions used in the Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram, and another way of looking at the four Sephiroth around the intersection of the paths of Samech and Pe -- Hod = Intellect = Air, Yesod = Luna = Water. Use the attributions specified in Liber V vel Reguli, on the basis that the God Names used in Reguli are the same Names as in the Equinox version of the Star Ruby, and are used in the same quarters (East = Earth, South = Fire, West = Water, North = Air). This corresponds to yet another way of looking at the four Sephiroth around the intersection of the paths of Samech and Pe -- note Crowley's discussion of the Ace of Discs card in The Book of Thoth, where he states, "...the entire symbol is not only a glyph of Earth as understood in this New Aeon of Horus, but of the number 6, the number of the Sun. This card is thus an affirmation of the identity of Sol and Terra" therefore Tiphereth = Sol = Earth.

N.O.X. and IO Pan

http://lionserpent.com/xxvanalysis.html

The Signs of N.O.X. are given in Liber Reguli in Magick in Theory and Practice. "Nox" means "night". The night referred to is the "Night of Pan". It refers to the Sublime Darkness veiled by the Ineffable Light. We may study this in the early chapters of The Book of Lies, and in Liber Reguli. See also I.T.C., Volume III, Number 2 for an analysis of the number 210. IO PAN is a hailing exclamation to the God Pan. Pan is written as PAN: "P, the letter of Mars, is a heiroglyph of two pillars, and therefore suggests duality; A, by its shape, is the pentagram, energy, and N, by its Tarot attribution, is death" (The Book of Lies, Ch. I, Commentary). Liber V vel Reguli: Puella, Puer, Vir, Mulier, Mater Triumphans Liber XXV with notes by Frater E.A.O.A. http://www.rahoorkhuit.net/library/libers/lib_0025n.html IO Pan (repeated five times). These signs are given in order in Reguli, and tell a story as such. My experience has been to see these lines of the ritual usually done while standing and facing east. A more satisfactory procedure seems to be to face the appropriate direction, as indicated in Reguli (and to which the magician is referred, if necessary), as the signs are made , and the paean is intoned. The fifth sign can then be done either facing east again, or toward Boleskine.

CHALDEAN ORACLES
EDITED AND REVISED BY SAPERE AUDE (W. WYNN WESTCOTT)
http://www.scribd.com/doc/28626251/Chald%C3%A6an-Oracles-Westcott-edition

IDEAS. INTELLIGIBLES, INTELLECTUALS, IYNGES, SYNOCHES,TELETARCH, FOUNTAINS, PRINCIPLES, HEKATE AND DAIMONS. 39. The Mind of the Father whirled forth in reechoing roar, comprehending by invincible Will Ideas omniform; which flying forth from that one fountain issued; for from the Father alike was the Will and the End (by which are they connected with the Father according to alternating life, through varying vehicles). But they were divided asunder, being by Intellectual Fire distributed into other Intellectuals. For the King of all previously placed before the polymorphous World a Type, intellectual, incorruptible, the imprint of whose form is sent forth through the World, by which the Universe shone forth decked with Ideas all various, of which the foundation is One, One and alone. From this the others rush forth distributed and separated through the various bodies of the Universe, and are borne in swarms through its vast abysses, ever whirling forth in illimitable radiation. They are intellectual conceptions from the Paternal Fountain partaking abundantly of the brilliance of Fire in the culmination of unresting Time. But the primary self-perfect Fountain of the Father poured forth these primogenial Ideas. 40. These being many, descend flashingly upon the shining Worlds, and in them are contained the Three Supernals. 41. They are the guardians of the works of the Father, and of the One Mind, the Intelligible. 42. All things subsist together in the Intelligible World. 43. But all Intellect understandeth the Deity, for Intellect existeth not without the Intelligible, neither apart from Intellect doth the Intelligible subsist. 44. For Intellect existeth not without the Intelligible; apart from it, it subsisteth not. 45. By Intellect He containeth the Intelligibles and introduceth the Soul into the Worlds. 46. By Intellect he containeth the Intelligibles, and introduceth Sense into the Worlds. 47. For this Paternal Intellect, which comprehendeth the Intelligibles and adorneth things ineffable, hath sowed symbols through the World. 48. This Order is the beginning of all section. 49. The Intelligible is the principle of all section. 50. The Intelligible is as food to that which understandeth. 51. The oracles concerning the Orders exhibits It as prior to the Heavens, as ineffable, and they addIt hath Mystic Silence.
13

52. The oracle calls the Intelligible causes Swift, and asserts that, proceeding from the Father, they rush again unto Him. 53. Those Natures are both Intellectual and Intelligible, which, themselves possessing Intellection, are the objects of Intelligence to others.

The Second Order of the Platonist philosophy was the Intelligible and Intellectual Triad. Among the Chaldans this order includes the Iynges, Synoches and Teletarchs. The Intellectual Triad of the later Platonists corresponds to the Fountains, Fontal Fathers or Cosmagogi of the Chaldans.

54. The Intelligible Iynges themselves understand from the Father; by Ineffable counsels being moved so as to understand. 55. Because it is the Operator, because it is the Giver of Life Beating Fire, because it filleth the Life-producing bosom of Hecate; and it instilleth into the Synoches the enlivening strength of Fire, endued with mighty Power. 56. He gave His own Whirlwinds to guard the Supernals, mingling the proper force of His own strength in the Synoches. 57. But likewise as many as serve the material Synoches. 58. The Teletarchs are comprehended in the Synoches. 59. Rhea, the Fountain and River of the Blessed Intellectuals, having first received the powers of all things in Her Ineffable Bosom, pours forth perpetual Generation upon all things. 60. For it is the bound of-the Paternal Depth, and the Fountain of the Intellectuals. 61. For He is a Power of circumlucid strength, glittering with Intellectual Sections. 62. He glittereth with Intellectual Sections, and hath filled all things with love. 63. Unto the Intellectual Whirlings of Intellectual Fire, all things are subservient, through the persuasive counsel of the Father. 64. O! how the World hath inflexible Intellectual Rulers. 65. The source of the Hekate correspondeth with that of the Fontal Fathers. 66. From Him leap forth the Amilicti, the all-relentless thunders, and the whirlwind receiving Bosoms of the all-splendid Strength of Hekat Father-begotten; and He who encircleth the Brilliance of Fire; And the Strong Spirit of the Poles, all fiery beyond.

Performance of the Star Ruby Willis E. Nightwood

http://willisnightwood.blogspot.com/2011/04/performance-of-star-ruby.html Turning to the tarot for imagery of the quarter guardians we find a tidy alignment of those discriptions with the trumps of the fixed signs. Junges / Hierophant / Taurus, Teletarchai / Hanged Man / Water, Synoches / Lust / Leo, and Daimones / Star / Aquarius. (Scorpio is the fixed sign of water which is Death, but the symbolism for that card did not match. Taking the Golden Dawn idea of using the alchemical eagle rather than base scorpio, results in Mem / Water being a better fit.) This would put the elemental arrangement identical with the one used in Liber V vel Reguli. 5. Invocation of the Guardians Extend the arms in the form of a Tau and say low but clear: PRO MOU JUNGES (Before me Junges) Visualize before you Atu V, the Hierophant. The conception is initiator of the will. The teaching and learning of the law. OPISO MOU TELETARCHAI (Behind me Teletarchai) Visualize behind you Atu XII, the Hanged Man. The conception is maintainer of the will. Guidance by true will, not ideas. EPI DEXIA SYNOCHEIES (On my right hand Synoches) Visualize on the right of you Atu VIII, Lust The conception is perfecter of the will. Fueling the soul's journey into self consciousness. EPARISTERA DAIMONES (On my left Daimones) Visualize on the left of you Atu XVII, the Star. The conception is executor of the will. Inspiring the ego with higher collective forces.

Gematria
APO PANTOS KAKODAIMONOS ("Away every evil spirit") 151 - 581 - 356 (1088) "The phrase APO PANTOS KAKODAIMONOS is exactly equivalent to HEKAS, HEKAS, ESTE BEBELOI, or to PROCUL, O PROCUL ESTE PROFANI. Both mean, "Away, away, that which is profane"." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983) "This line sets the basic tone of the banishing characteristic of the ritual. It is a line parallel to the Biblical one where on the mountaintop Satan tempts Jesus, and the response is "Get thee behind me, Satan.". The line itself is a prepositional phrase with an understood verb. The word Apo implies motion behind, and takes the genitive case of that which is to be put behind, i.e. pantoc kakodaimonoc. Literally translated, it means "of every evil daemon". With an implied verb "go" or "get", the line means "Get behind me every evil daemon. The magician stands in the center of his universe, facing east, the direction of the rising sun. He inhales the energy or prana. The meaning of the line is emphasized by the action of sweeping the hand backward, and forcing out the breath, i.e. figuratively blowing away each evil daemon. Now the "evil daemon" is not defined. In the Thelemic sense this daemon represents any negative aspect of life which detract from the performance of one's True Will. The word daimonoc includes things which derive from the Deities, or from fate. The kako(c) is a prefix derived from the adjective meaning "evil", however defined. At the beginning of the ritual, the magician is in Malkuth. The banishing of the "evil daemons" is from this plane. According to Liederkranz (1974) he becomes the master of these daemons by doing so. The equivalent of this line does not occur in the LBR or in Liber Reguli." (TEXT, TRANSLATION, COMMENTARY by E.A.O.A., 1986) SOI ("thy") 280 "SOI, (SOI) means "Unto Thee". This is an address to the Most High, Kether aspect of one Self. Curiously, its numerical value, 280, is that of the Name of the Archangel of Malkuth, Sandalphon, reminding us that "Malkuth is in Kether, and Kether is in Malkuth". Sandalphon's name has been translated to mean "the sound of sandals", the sound of passage of Him That Goest. In Greek, the number 280 is written Sigma-Pi, equivalent to Samekh-Peh. It is at the intersection of these two paths on the Tree of Life, before the Veil of Paroketh, that one symbolically stands in performing the traditional Pentagram Ritual. It seems likely that this symbolism is to be maintained in the Star Ruby. This is emphasized by another significance of 280: it is the number of squares on the walls of the Vault of the Adepti wherein the initiates of the Golden Dawn were raised to full adepthood. That psyche of the pronouncement of the word SOI is none other than the highest manifestation of one's own Holy Guardian Angel." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983) O PHALLE ("phallus") 800 - 566 (1366) "O falle has a total value of 1366, the product of two primes, 2 and 683. The word falle, as 566, is equivalent to DVS, secret, spelled out. It is also the product of two primes 2 and 283. This last number is equivalent to "aurum inclusum", confined gold, or RVGS BHZ. Liederkranz writes that by touching his "weapon", the magician declares the most powerful technique of magic, and that its working is pertinent to the Aeon of Horus. Here Crowley adds a footnote that the significance of the word is to be found in its qabalistic interpretation. The
18

word falloc, in its nominative form, adds to 831, as does the word Pyramic (Pyramid). In this light the two words imply the gate or esoteric source of initiation. With the following adjectives, a sexual connotation can also be implied. Also, 831 is the product of 3 and 277, and the latter, in Hebrew refers to ORZ, meaning "to sow, propagate, seed, semen" (Crowley, 1977)." (TEXT, TRANSLATION, COMMENTARY by E.A.O.A., 1986) ISCHUROS ("mighty") 1580 "ISCUROS, (ISChUROS) literally means "strong, mighty", corresponding to Geburah. It's value is 1580. Advanced students of Qabalah may wish to study this as 20 x 79. In Greek, 1580 is written Alpha-Phi-Pi, Phi and Pi both being equivalent to the Hebrew Peh, Mars; and Alpha again representint the Primal Energy of Life." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983) "The word isxuroc means strong, mighty, powerful, also stiff, firm, lasting, hard, and severe, great, excessive. The meaning is quite clear in the several connotations. Following the pattern of the LBR, this word is attributed to Geburah, and reflects the severe or forceful connotation of its meaning. Its value is 1580, the product of 20 and 79. These reflect an element of duality perfected, and union. The number 79, that of the two pillars of the temple (zob and yixai), is a prime not listed in the meanings of the prime numbers in 777 (Crowley, 1977)." (TEXT, TRANSLATION, COMMENTARY by E.A.O.A., 1986)

EUCHARISTOS ("beneficient") 1886 "EUCARISTOS, (EUChARISTOS) is the root of our word "eucharist" and essentially indicates a blessing, clearly corresponding to Chesed, the Sphere of Jupiter. Its letters total 1886, or 2 x 23 x 41; where 23 is most notibly the value of ChIH, "life"; and 41 fo AM, "mother". This balances against the masculine quality of Mars in Ischuros. (NOTE: These numbers - 2, 23, and 41 - are the prime factors of 1886.)" (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983) "The word euxaristoc, 1886, the product of 2, 23, and 41. The latter two numbers have been attributed to pentagrams. The concept of "eucharist", or "sacrament", derives from the prefix eu, meaning "good" or "well", and the verb xarizomai meaning to show favor or kindness, to please or gratify, to indulge, or to be pleasing, agreeable, or be granted a favor. The adjective thus describes the condition of being winning, agreeable, pleasant, grateful, or thankful. In contrast to isxuroc, this word is assigned to Chesed, and its meaning fits well with its position on the Pillar of Mercy. Euxaristoc, interpreted as "communion", can easily be interpreted on a number of levels." (TEXT, TRANSLATION, COMMENTARY by E.A.O.A., 1986) IAO 811 "IAO can be studied at length in Magick in Theory and Practice (Chapter 5). At the risk of oversimplification, it may be regarded in this ritual as a mantram of Tiphareth, declaring the central balance and equilibration that has been established by the four-armed cross, as well as the Light which springs forth in the center of the cross
19

(in the heart region) in the completion of Pentagrammaton. Its value is 811, hinting at the union of Hadit (8) and Nuit (11). These three letters, Iota, Alpha, and Omega, are the exact letters used to write the number 811 in Greek. That is, they are the essence of the number in themselves." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983) "By gematria, the number of IAQ is 811 a prime number. The equivalent Greek Word AIQ means I breathe, I live, I know. This is a fifth element, which when added to the traditional qabalistic cross (of the LBR) creates the figure of a pentagram, or if put on a higher plane, indicates the apex of a pyramid. In this word the focus centers on Tiphareth. Little need to be said about IAO, the Gnostic supreme being. Massey (1974) in discussing the Hebrew and other Creations, includes IAO as one of the seven Elohim, the children of the ancient mother Sophia. "In their primordial phase they were seven elementary powers, warring in chaos, lawless and timeless. They were first born of the Mother in space; and then the Seven Companions passed into the sphere of time, as auxiliaries of Kronos, or Sons of the Male Parent." (TEXT, TRANSLATION, COMMENTARY by E.A.O.A., 1986) THERION = 247 NUIT = 469 BABALON = 156 HADIT = 315 IO PAN 810 - 131 (941) (In Hebrew PAN = 210 = NOX) PRO MOU IUNGES OPICHO MOU TELETARCHAI EPI DEXIA SUNOCHES EPARISTERA DAIMONES PHEG EI GAR PERI MOU O ASTER TON PENTE KAI EN TEI STELEI O ASTER TON EX ESTEXE ("Before me the Iynges, behind me the Teletarch(es), on my right hand the Synoches, on my left the daemons, for about me flame the Star of Five and in the pillar stands the Star of Six.") IUNGES 621 "In the East we invoke Junges (Iota-Upsilon-Gamma-Gamma-Epsilon-Sigma: in Greek the double "GG" is pronounced like "ng"). The arithmetic total of these numbers is 621. Writing this number in Greek, we get Chi, the Chariot; Kappa, the Wheel of Fortune; Alpha, the Primal Swirlings, or Swastika, or Thunderbolt of Zeus. Totalling the numbers of the Tarot Trumps corresponding we get 7 + 10 + 0 = 17, a number again representative of the swastika. Every aspect of this suggests a spinning, electrical surge, a primal, swirling power." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983)

20

TELETARCHAI 1352 "The word Teletarxai value of 1352. This number is the product of 8 (the cube of 2) and 169 (the square of 13). Eight is the number of Mercury, of Initiation. Thirteen is the number for the dissolution of the ego, of unity (dxa) and love (HBHA), and is the reflection of 31=la=al. The word is therefore clearly related gematrically to the concept of Initiation, its process and product; and has direct meaning for Thelema. The easiest interpretation is to view the word as a combination of the prefix Tele, meaning ultimate, remote, or in this case primeval, first or original, and Arxai, meaning rule, or in this case control or law i.e. Natural Law. Frater A. L. (1983) summarizes the meaning quite nicely. The word Teletarxai most likely means "those in charge of an initiation", i.e. the Hierophants." (TEXT, TRANSLATION, COMMENTARY by E. A. O. A. 1986) SUNOCHES 1525 "This word Sunoches (Sigma-Upsilon-Nu-Omicron-Chi-Epsilon-Sigma) has a value of 1525. This is the value in Hebrew of Shem Hamphorash, The 72-fold Name of God. By factoring it we get 5 x 5 x 61. This is interesting, since 61 is the value of Ain, "no-thing", of KALI the Hindu goddess of destruction, etc.; and the closest correspondance of Sunoches to a member of the Supernal Triad is Binah." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983) DAIMONOS/DAIMONES 445/380 "DAIMON means "god, goddess", much like Theos or Thea. In Homer it is interchangeable with the Latin numen. Though it is the source of our word "demon", it was only in the New Testament times that it came to have "demonic" attributes. Most simply it meant any sort of spirit or "genius". The plural of this word is DAIMONOS, the word used in the later version of the Star Ruby. It therefore means Spirits, "Geniuses" or Entities. In the hierarchy of the Chaldans, the Daimonos were beneath the Demiurges, who were beneath the "Intellectual Triad" (i.e., the Supernals). We therefore have the most "earthly" concept of these four; and it is perhaps significant that Daimonos are assigned to the North, "the place of the greatest darkness". DAIMONOS totals to 445. (No, Most Beloved Frater, it cannot be spelled without the A). A different, but related, word is DAIMONES. Hesiod used this term to mean "the souls of men of the Golden Age, forming a link between gods and men". That is, Man-God. As what we call the H.G.A. was of old termed the "genius" (Daimon), the Daimones were those who "had their genius"; that is, true aspects. This word totals to 380. Check Sepher Sephiroth and you'll see this is the number gotten by multiplying, one-forone, the value of the letters YHVH by the value of the letters of ADNI. The result is a very complex idea of Deity; that is, one suitable for the evening news. Other words of this value are OTzB OTzBVN, "pain, trouble, misery"; and ORPL, "thick fog, darkness"; but it is also a name of Egypt. Perhaps the hidden meaning to Jewry is "the place of our difficulty"." (An Analysis... by Frater A.L. (443), 1983)
