Looking at the events leading up to the CHOGM and the outcome proves that India has elbowed other countries in the CHOGM, which includes its former colonial master Britain and aspiring Great Power in the Asia Pacific, Australia. The western countries in the CHOGM, namely Britain, Australia and New Zealand, w anted to pin the countries which were ruled by colonial masters before by bringi

ng about an institution which monitor the human rights in those countries. This move was scuttled by India saying quite bluntly that CHOGM should focus more on developmental challenges rather than bringing up the issue of human rights for w hich theres a better multi-lateral institution called the United Nations. India also went on to highlight the hypocrisy of the western nations and the Dou ble standards that they follow in pursuing lofty utopian concepts called human R ights. While the western world is keen to have the status-quo monarchies in Powe r in the Middle-East to serve their oil-benefits, theyre ready to wield a big sti ck against countries like Fiji, Maldives and Sri Lanka which are in the fringes of their geo-strategic objectives. If the CHOGM is anything to go by, its clear that India has graduated itself from a regional power in South Asia to a Great Power in Asia Pacific that can speak for the smaller nations in Africa, Latin America and Africa. Indias pursuance of tactful diplomacy is done with an objective; it understands thatit needs the sup port of these countries for its candidature in the United Nations Security Counc il. Second, India would also not be conducting its diplomacy based on utopian concep ts like Human Rights while its near competitor is having a free-run for the reso urces in the Global Souths developing countries. Its just a matter of time before India will join the race with China to carve out Spheres of Influence in these reg ions, defining its neo-colonial pursuits. The last image that India will try to project is a torch-bearer of old power players from the West. On the other ngth. As the lived up to alm of Great in the book hand, its good that India has finally understood its diplomatic stre country which houses the most English speakers in the world, it has the expectation of filling the void left by Great Britain in the re Powers through the Commonwealth Nations. This point has been stated Reconnecting Britain and India, published in 2010.

Its here that a bit of appreciation for Indias founding fathers is needed.Despite coming out of the colonial rule from the British and having staunchopposition fr om the Indian population against joining the Commonwealth nations, it was felt t hat a day will come when India as a Great Power could use its past for the futur e. CHOGM has been the starting point of that ambition. On that note, it will interesting to see on how India conducts its affairs in th e much-expected South Asian Affairs of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) summit schedu led in Maldives from 10th to 11th of this month. http://minivannews.com/politics/comment-india-speaks-for-small-countries-and-est ablishes-its-credential-in-the-chogm-27806 ------Gadhafis son could hide in the Sahara Desert for months Nav 3,2011 JOHANNESBURG A fugitive wanted by the International Criminal Court, Moammar Gadh afis one-time heir apparent appears to have disappeared in the Sahara Deserts ocea n of dunes and could remain hidden for months in an area more than twice the siz e of Texas. Seif al-Islam Gadhafi may be plotting a counterrevolution, scheming about a geta way to a friendly country, or negotiating a surrender to the ICC. Nothing has be

en heard of him since sources on Oct. 28 said Tuareg nomads were escorting him t he length of Libya and that he was close to the Mali border. My latest information is that they are not in Mali and they are not in Niger yet either, Malian legislator Ibrahim Ag Mohamed Assaleh said this week, adding to th e mystery of his whereabouts. Gadhafi, a 39-year-old British-educated engineer, could be deliberately feeding disinformation from a desert where national boundaries are unmarked and unpolice d and where smugglers and al-Qaida gunmen roam freely. Analyst Adam Thiam, a columnist for Le Republicain newspaper in Mali, said life in the desert for long periods outside of isolated oases is nearly impossible, b ut that a zone in Mali has water, livestock and small game. However the area is used by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, an extremist group which has no love of the Gadhafi family, Thiam said. Gadhafi violently repressed Libyas own Islamist mo vement and was a longtime enemy of al-Qaida. Gadhafi and his late fathers former chief of military intelligence, Abdullah al-S enoussi, have reportedly been traveling in separate convoys escorted by Tuaregs, the hardy nomads who understand best how to survive in the desert. Loyalty to t he ethnic group trumps nationality, and the Tuaregs traditional stomping grounds stretch across North Africa, from Morocco and Algeria to Libya and southwest to Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Chad. Gadhafi and al-Senoussi are both wanted by the ICC for allegedly organizing and ordering attacks in Libya that killed civilians during the revolt against Moamma r Gadhafi. More than a dozen countries in Africa dont recognize the international court, but even some that do ignore its arrest warrants amid criticism that the Hague-base d court goes after a disproportionate number of Africans. Sudanese leader Omar a l-Bashir, wanted for genocide and war crimes committed in Darfur, attended a con ference in Malawi last month with no problem, though Malawi is a member of the I CC. In the area where Gadhafi is believed hiding, only Algeria is not a signatory. A lgeria was a staunch supporter of Moammar Gadhafi and has given refuge to his wi fe, a daughter and two other sons, but now is trying to establish ties with Liby as new leaders. Gadhafi is more problematic than the rest of the family for Algeria, said Libyas am bassador to South Africa, Abdalla Alzubedi. He said he has no independent information about Gadhafi but said he does believe media reports that his convoy is carrying gold, diamonds and cash which could b e his passport to freedom. I dont doubt that they have a lot of money, Alzubedi said. They treated Libya like a private estate and their private bank. They could take any amount of money, any amount of gold. South Africas Beeld newspaper has quoted local mercenaries as saying a group of g uns for hire is protecting Gadhafi. ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has said S outh African mercenaries may be trying to spirit Gadhafi away to Zimbabwe, which does not recognize the international court. Some fear Gadhafi could rally Tuareg fighters, newly and heavily rearmed while t hey fought to defend his fathers regime, to stage an insurgency. Thiam said up to 500 Tuaregs in 130 vehicles had fled Libya to northern Mali after the fall of M

oammar Gadhafis 42-year-old regime. Hundreds of other Tuareg fighters have gone h ome to Chad and Niger. Many Tuaregs are furious about how Gadhafi was captured and killed. Mosques in T uareg towns across the Sahel dedicated last Fridays prayers to the memory of the slain Libyan leader, who used some of Libyas oil wealth to build mosques and reli gious schools across the region and who glorified the tribes nomadic lifestyle. A Western diplomat said Wednesday that he has information suggesting al-Senoussi crossed into northern Mali this week, though he cautioned that a man like this c ould create false leads for people to follow. A Tuareg source said al-Senoussi wa s in northwest Mali on Monday. On Oct. 28, a Tuareg leader said Gadhafi was nearing the Mali border and could c ross into the country that night. These sources spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. That same day, ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said he was in indirect n egotiations with Gadhafi about his possible surrender for trial. Libyan official s then announced that they want Gadhafi. We want to try Seif al-Islam in Libya, said military spokesman Col. Ahmed Bani. He committed his crimes here in Libya. He committed murder. He is our enemy. Since then, nothing has been heard of Gadhafi. The ICC has asked all countries to refuse over-flight rights to Gadhafi but the Sahara is dotted with remote landing strips used regularly by smugglers. Gadhafi himself never spoke of leaving his homeland. We have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C. Plan A is to live and die in Libya. Plan B is to live and die in Libya. Plan C is to live and die in Libya, he told CNN Turk after rebels took the Libyan city of Benghazi in February. After the rebels stormed into Tripoli on Aug. 21, they announced that they had c aptured Seif al-Islam. But he turned up in the middle of the night two days late r at the luxury Rixos Hotel where journalists were confined, flashing a big smil e and a V-for victory sign. Appearing confident and defiant, he got into a white limousine escorted by armored SUVs and took reporters on a tour of the hottest s pots in Tripoli. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/africa/gadhafis-son-could-hide-in-sahara-des ert-for-months/2011/11/03/gIQAZzH6hM_print.html ------Malaysian police ban gay rights festival 3 November 2011 Kuala Lumpur Malaysian police said they will prevent an annual gay rights festiv al, with organisers slamming the move Thursday as proof of the repression homose xuals face in the socially conservative Muslim country. Deputy national police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the decision to ban the three -year-old Seksualiti Merdeka (Sexuality Freedom) festival set for November 9-13 ca me after Muslims called for it to be banned. Police will take action...to prevent any function relating to the programme, Khali

d was quoted as saying by national Bernama news agency. He said Muslim and other groups had protested that the programme could create dis harmony, enmity and disturb public order. A senior police official confirmed the decision to AFP. Festival organiser Pang Khee Pik said the announcement marked a very tragic day f or Malaysia. We are aware that homophobic polices in Malaysia are not isolated, but (the polic e decision) is a symptom of a systemic breakdown in human rights in the country, he told AFP. Pang said that 1,500 people attended the event last year and organisers were exp ecting that number to double this year. Homosexuality remains a largely taboo subject in Muslim-majority Malaysia and so domy is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The police decision came after rising pressure from Muslims, with one Islamic gr oup threatening to protest on Friday. Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin also was quoted earlier Thursday by Berna ma as calling the festival immoral and saying it should be stopped. Any activity that does not benefit the majority of Malaysians should not be carri ed out. Its a waste of time, although they can say its their own right and freedom , he said. Pang said the move highlights the oppression faced by Malaysian homosexuals. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of Malaysia are tired of hav ing our rights continually taken away from us. We are tired of being bullied, ha rassed, persecuted and put in jail for who we are, Pang said. Pang said the festival was likely to be cancelled and we will have to re-strategi se. http://www.khaleejtimes.com/displayarticle.asp?xfile=data/international/2011/Nov ember/international_November113.xml&section=international&col= ------Malaysia bans steamy Thu Nov 03 2011, Malaysia has banned an "Islamic sex guide" by a controversial group that reporte dly urges Muslim men in polygamous marriages to have group sex with their wives, a report said on Thursday. The book was published by the Muslim "Obedient Wife Club", which was formed earl ier this year and has sparked controversy with its radical suggestions on sex an d marriage in conservative, Muslim-majority Malaysia. The Home Ministry has banned the book, titled "Islamic Sex, Fighting Jews to Ret urn Islamic Sex to the World" with immediate effect, The Star daily reported. It cited Abdul Aziz Mohamad Nor, a top official in the ministry s publications d Islamic sex guide : report

ivision. Abdul Aziz was quoted as saying the book, the existence of which was first repor ted last month, was banned because of the wife club s links to the outlawed grou p Al-Arqam. Some people from the Obedient Wife Club and related organisations are former mem bers of Al-Arqam, a Malaysian-based Islamic sect that was banned in the country in the 1990s as a deviationist cult. Those found in possession of the book face fines of 50,000 ringgit ($15,800) whi le anyone caught reproducing it can be jailed up to three years, The Star report ed. Abdul Aziz could not immediately be reached by AFP. The wives club caused a stir earlier this year by calling on women to be "whore s in bed" to prevent their men from straying and pursuing divorce. Malaysian media reports have said the book suggests Muslim husbands have sex wit h all their wives simultaneously. One chapter, "How Sex Becomes Worship," reportedly contains unusually explicit s exual descriptions for a Malaysian publication, such as a tutorial on breast-fon dling. AFP has not seen a copy of the book. Open discussion of sex is frowned upon in Malaysia, which regularly bans books d eemed to be obscene or offensive to Islam. Club organisers have previously said the book was exclusively for its members an d was not intended for general distribution and thus should not be banned. http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/Print/764281.aspx ------India for impartial probe into Libya war crimes Thu Nov 03 2011, United Nations : India today said it expects an impartial investigation by the Int ernational Criminal Court (ICC) into war crimes committed during the Libyan conf lict that punishes both Muammar Gaddafi s troops as well as opposition forces re sponsible for violence and killings during the uprising. In a statement at the UN Security Council on Libya, India s Permanent Representa tive to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri said ICC s Prosecutor should not be influenced by non-judicial considerations while carrying out his investigation into the crimes committed against humanity in Libya. We expect that the ICC Prosecutor will carry out a thorough and impartial investi gation into all alleged crimes by all parties to the conflict in Libya. The Prosecutor must... focus his attention solely on prosecution without diversio n due to extraneous considerations, Puri said. For Full Report :

But they still face significant obstacles as they s trive to enter the financial mainstream.

Turkey at present has four Islamic banks three that are partially owned by compa nies based in the Persian Gulf which accounted for 5 percent of Turkeys 1-trillio n-lira ($559 billion) banking sector in late 2010, according to data from the Pa rticipation Banks Association of Turkey, a lobbyist group for Islamic banks. The banks are known as participation banks, since, in keeping with Islamic tenets, depositors and borrowers share the risk of financial transactions with the bank s themselves. Interest is not charged. Clients are mostly pious entrepreneurs fr om the central region of Anatolia, especially in cities such as Gaziantep, Konya , and Kayseri. The area is home to several companies that have become known as An atolian Tigers for their rapid growth. Until sharia-compliant banking was introduced to Turkey in the 1980s, many such individuals kept their money under the mattress, both because of mistrust of tradi tional banking, and their desire to avoid breaking religious tenets regarding th e payment of interest, said Osman Akyuz, secretary-general of the Participation Banks Association of Turkey. No longer. While still tiny, Islamic banks share of T urkeys banking market is nearly twice as large as it was in 2005, when consumer w ariness of such banks was stronger. In a September report, the international rat ings agency Standard & Poors said that Islamic banking in Turkey is set for furth er growth, particularly if the country cultivates stronger ties with wealthy Gul f states. Like Hazare, Khan peppered his tirade against corruption with an a ssertion of patriotism by stating, In 1940 at the same venue ( Minar- e- Pakista n) we passed the Pakistan Resolution; today we have gathered here to save Pakist an from thieves, plunderers and corrupt politicians.
