1. Pierre should not open the package. Clearly, this kind of information would
ensure his company’s success over the other company’s, and his win would be
based on fraud. The ethical decision would clearly be to send back the package
unopened. Although we live in a “dog-eat-dog” world, particularly where
business is concerned, honesty is always the best policy. Imagine the false-
satisfaction Pierre would receive from beating out his competitor by cheating?
How would you feel as a customer of Pierre’s company if you knew that you were
paying for goods from a company that rips people off? Perhaps you, the
customer, would be the next to be gypped. If your success is based on cheating,
your company will not go far.

Furthermore, you must question the credibility of your subordinate who sent you
the package. Clearly, they have no concept of privacy, and would likely be apt to
selling out on you if it benefited him.
