1. Wrap a string of outdoor
lights (at least 6 feet in length) around a 6-foot-long bamboo stake (#56475). Leave about 10 inches at one end of the stake free of lights. Secure the lights to the stake using clear packing tape. 2. Push the end of the stake (that is free of lights) into the ground. Connect an outdoor extension cord to the lights, hiding and securing the cord as needed. 3. Thread five paper lanterns (#237095) onto the stake as shown. Gently bend each lanterns internal wire frame to clear the stake. You will not need the electrical cording included with the lanterns.

Surprise guests with these lush place mats.
1. Make a 14- x 18-inch
template from cardboard. 2. Using a marker, trace the template onto the back of a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (#151360). Repeat for the number of place mats you need. 3. Use sharp utility scissors to cut the pieces of carpet. (One square yard or 3 linear feet of carpet should yield four place mats.)

Add a welcoming glow outdoors with a group of paper lanterns.
Good To Know
Avoid using this project during rain or heavy wind. Store the lanterns and the stake indoors after use in good weather.

Run With it
Dress up any meal with a painted blind turned into a table runner.
1. Select a window blind in
a width that suits your table and is at least 1 foot longer than the table. We used a 36- x 72-inch natural-colored faux-bamboo blind (#164143). Remove the plastic hardware and the screws from each end of the blind. Slide the long plastic end caps off the valance, and reattach them to the ends of the blind to create smooth edges. 2. Place the blind on a work surface thats covered with paper or a drop cloth. Spray both sides of the blind with at least two coats of red paint (#244157), allowing each coat to dry completely. 3. Spray both sides of the blind with a clear top coat (#39449), and allow to dry. Arrange the finished blind on your table.

Wash Pal
Organize cleaning supplies with this handy bucket.
1. You can find a plastic pail

in the paint department. 2. Using a 964-inch drill bit, drill several pairs of holes about 12 inch apart, spaced evenly around the pails rim. 3. Insert cable ties (#222127) found in the hardware departmentinto the holes to form loops that will hold tall, thin items. Join the ends of the cable ties. To make larger loops for bigger items, simply secure more cable ties together.

You also could use this pail for craft supplies, gardening tools, or a childs carryall for trips to the beach.

1. One end of the wire
yard stake (#222126) has two preformed circles that can hold photographs. Using needle-nose pliers, bend and twist the other end of the stake into a shape, such as a square or triangle, that will stand on a surface. Tip: You may need to work with the shape of the stake until its stable. 2. Once the stake is in the desired shape, spray it with one or two coats of paint; we used aqua (#35940). Allow to dry. Slip photographs or notes into the clips, and display them on your tabletop.
Use this yard item to create a clever clip for photos and invitations.

Serve breakfast for someone special (like Mom) on this dainty table.
1. Prime a (114-inch-thick)
18-inch round ponderosa pine panel and (8-inchlong) table legs (#1530).
3. On one side of the panel,

mark the locations for the mounting plates (#838) at equidistant points. 4. At the marked locations, drill pilot holes, and then attach the mounting plates to the panel using the hardware provided. Screw a table leg into each mounting plate.
Allow to dry. 2. Apply two coats of paint (we used Valspar Signature Colors, Laura Ashley Home, Green River LA1115, satin) to each piece. Allow each coat to dry.

Our May Unwind & Design project will help you and your guests create a unique display using personalized shadow boxes. This is a great excuse to get together with friends for an afternoon filled with creativity.

Step 2: To create a wallpaper or shelf liner background, trace and then cut the paper to fit over the cork. Use a hot-glue gun to attach the paper to the cork. Let dry. Step 3: Attach the cork to the back of the box using a hot-glue gun. Press down to

help the cork adhere, and allow to dry. Step 4: Using thumbtacks, pushpins, clear tape, or glue, decorate the inside of the box with your favorite photographs and souvenirs. Larger items can stand alone on the shelfs base.

Plant for Success
Ensure that your childs first foray into gardening will be successful. Choose small plants from the garden center rather than growing vegetables from seed. Opt for hybrid varieties, which better resist disease. Set out plants after the last predicted frost.
How does your garden grow? With help from your kids.
You Say Tomato

Tomatoes, especially smaller varieties, make great plants for a childrens garden. Call them fruits (their true scientific classification), not veggies. Plant tomatoes in full sun for best results. Try cherry tomatoes; theyll reach maturity earlier.
Teaching Garden
Get children involved in the process between planting and harvesting. Mulch around plants to hold the water in and keep the weeds out. Entrust the kids with the job of watering plants a few times a week. Loosely tie off plants to stakes using twine as the plants start growing tall.

living in 1930s condo seeks brighter bath with an up-todate design and more storage. Bound by her budget, a total gut was simply out of the question, so she determined that the sink, tile, and toilet could stay. 18
White On
Chosen for its light, open feel, white paint covers the upper half of the walls throughout the room. The white also meshes well with existing features, such as the window shutters, that the homeowner wanted to keep. And now, when paired with white, the green tile feels restful and serene rather than dated.
The radiator (thats no longer in use) and the recessed shelf above the sink were coated with primer and painted to match the tile, making them less obtrusive.

Aim High
1 Mounting a shelf above the door is a clever way to utilize unused space; it also raises the eye upward. The white beaded-board ceiling lends textural interest. 2 A rectangular mirror was placed horizontally to reflect the scope of the room. Reflective accents, such as mirrors, are an easy and inexpensive way to make a space seem bigger. 3 Beneath the sink, a simple skirt was created by sewing a white fabric shower curtain. Its attached to the sink with self-fastening strips. An opening in the skirts center allows easy access to the concealed plumbing and toiletries.

suburbanite decided to focus outdoors on his neglected backyard. With a cramped patio, a chain-link fence, and an uninviting landscape, the yard lacked style, but it was the perfect canvas for crafting a functional outdoor room. To transform the area, the homeowner extended the patio, added all-season plants, and invested in a new gas grill. Keeping costs low and impact high, he tamed his backyard jungle and created a cozy terrace ideal for sitting down with a good book or hosting an impromptu barbecue with friends.

Step 9: Remove the old fabric from the seat. Lay the seat on a drapery panel, and cut around it, adding 3 inches to the length on all four sides. With a staple gun, staple the panel to the seat from underneath, turning under raw edges. Pull tight, and fold in at corners as if you were wrapping a present. Cut off any excess fabric as you staple. Step 10: Reinstall the seat from underneath the chair using the original screws. Repeat for each chair.

Use painters tape to hold the stencil in place, and lightly stick the stencil to the tabletop. Use the pouncer brush to paint the pattern on the tabletop. Carefully move and place the stencil as needed until the tabletop is covered. Let dry. Step 4: For a metallic finish, use the same stencil, and dab a metallic glaze over the painted patterns; allow to dry. Step 5: Tape off the tabletop using painters tape. With a small edger brush, paint the edge of the tabletop with the accent color. Allow to dry. Using a rag, highlight the edge by rubbing lightly with the metallic glaze. Step 6: Brush on a clear protective finish to the entire tabletop.

Cut a piece of quilt batting 3 inches longer on all four sides of the bench top. Step 5: Place the foam rubber on top of the seat board, and lay the batting over it. Using a staple gun, staple the batting to the underside of the seat board, pulling the batting tight. Cut off any excess. Step 6: Cut the drapery panel 3 inches longer on all four sides of the bench top, and place it over the batting, pulling tightly and stapling it to the underside of the seat board. Fold in the fabric at the corners, and staple underneath as if you were wrapping a present. Cut off any excess fabric. Replace the reupholstered seat board, securing it from underneath the chair using the original screws. Step 7: Hammer in upholstery nails on all four sides of the bench. We spaced the nails 112 inches apart. Step 8: Highlight raised areas of the bench legs with bronze glaze. Step 9: Brush on a clear protective finish over the wooden areas, and let dry.

Although the historic schoolhouseturned-weekend-getaway had great architectural bones and a solid structure, it lacked clear walkways, vitality, and cheerful color. Taking design cues from Upstate New York cottages as well as traditional Greek Revival schoolhouses, the homeowner began the update by creating better access to the front and side entrances via a walkway made with interlocking pavers. With both entrances clearly marked, the homeowner could focus on the landscape. A white picket fence, also reminiscent of traditional Colonial style, creates a border around the homes lawn and complements the front railing. Small boxwoods were added in front of the railing and along the fence. In the planting beds on the side of the house, the homeowner planted ornamental grasses and shrubs, and finished the look with planters and a trellis. Green-and-white striped awnings over the front windows enhance the color scheme, while yellow paint on the door provides a focal point for passersby. A heavy pitched entry was removed for a fresher look.

After relocating to the Southeast, this

New England native wanted to bring a Cape Cod feel to her new home. She began the transformation with the front windows. Thick casing and cross-shaped panes make a bold statement across the exterior and help to establish the homes presence. Next, the homeowner replaced her existing siding on the front of the house with cedar shingles to capture the New England look. She plans to cover the remainder of the exterior at a later date. To expand the existing entrys tiny stoop, she had a landing built at the top of the steps so that she would have more space when entering the home. The cloth awning was replaced with a wooden pitched roof and post. Also during the renovation, the homeowners contractor installed a new wooden railing to replace the small metal support that was not compliant with the modern local building code. Finally, a new wooden door, painted a calm deep green prior to installation, adds a touch of color to the entry. Finishing touches include lighting and new shrubs with mulch.

Lowes employees join with Habitat for Humanity to construct a home in Van Buren, Ark.,using principles of universal design.
Habitat for Humanity, store employees participated in a construction project that was coordinated by the Arkansas Valley Habitat for Humanity (AVHFH). Part of the Women Build program, the home was built in Van Buren over a period of four months in late 2006. In a wheelchair since the age of 13, the 39-year-old Habitat homeowner moved in and out of inadequate subsidized housing over the past several years. He desired an affordable home where he could live independently. Recognizing his need, AVHFH approved his new home application and called on Lowes for helphaving worked on a previous project with AVHFH, the Van Buren store welcomed the chance to pitch in again. We felt there was a real need here, said Ivan Devitt, store manager. A $15,000 grant from Lowes helped fund the construction, but contributions also poured in from around the community. the store was doing, they contributed to help finish out the costs, Devitt says. In addition to landscaping and smaller projects, the Van Buren store employees instructed the all-women volunteer team in home-building. Held in one-hour sessions, the how-to classes were offered at the store on Saturdays throughout August and September. Eight employees led the sessions starting with power tool use and safety, and moving to framing, roofing, installing siding and drywall, trim work, and painting. Work on the house took place on Saturdays, and despite a few weather delays, construction and landscaping were completed in early December as scheduled. Because of the homeowners special needs, Devitt explains that the house needed to fit the footprint of a Habitat house and also be accessible for everyone, which includes specific design elements such as an open floor plan, wider hallways, and more space to accommodate the homeowners wheelchair turns. Volunteer coordinator for the Women Build group, Becky Neighbors, credits the invaluable assistance of the store team. Lowes recognized the need to help equip the women of this area, she said. We have enlisted a small army in this project, and I would like to thank the Lowes and Habitat partnership for giving us this opportunity. Lowes is the underwriter of Habitat for Humanitys Women Build program, which empowers women to help eliminate substandard housing.
