REACTION PAPER ON EDUCATORS SPEAK (Manila Bulletin, July 11, 2010) In order to provide quality education, Dep-Ed adopted the Understanding by Design (or UBD) framework in full force on 1st semester of school year 2010. UBDs objective is to create a high quality education and to develop learning that endures understanding that can be useful in everyday life. However, according to the author, our educational system is not ready yet for changes and adoption of this new framework. She suggested that instead of having the program in full blast this year, why not start small then after few trials, thats the only time we may adopt the UBD program. In my opinion, I agree with the author that our educational system is not ready yet for this structural change in our educational system. First, we have to train our educators well because they are the ones wholl be on hand in pursuing the project. They should be adept in all aspects of providing education to our students in order for this project to become successful. Another flaw that I observed is that we should focus first on providing enough classrooms, facilities, and even schools for our students before even thinking of having this type of program. Its not that I dont agree with the advocacy of the program; the objectives of the adaptation of the framework will be very useful in enhancing the kind of education system we have here in our country however, quality education can be only called quality if students can have access to this program. How can we have such program if there are no enough chairs, tables, books, classrooms for our students? How can the qualified teachers provide good education if they have one hundred (100) pupils in one classroom? Will they be able to explain and make students understand that they have to reflect, understand, interpret, empathize etc. if there are tons of students in one classroom? I believe that the program is going to succeed if these opportunities will be provided for our students. The aim of the UBD is very good and will really improve the quality of our education. I also agree with the author that instead of full implementation of this program to all schools, they should try to pilot test this program to those schools

that are ready to adopt UBD. From there, they will find out what are the things that they have to improve and may analyze solutions to problems that may arise. With our new leader, students like us are also hoping that they will prioritize enhancing our education system for this will be the foundation of the bread and butter of the future generation & creation of future leaders for our country.
