Format of the assessment


All the questions in this assessment activity relate to a story or text in te reo Māori, of
approximately 500 words in length.
The assessment contains questions of the following type:
• Find similar words or phrases
• Answer questions written in te reo Māori
• Answer questions written in English.

There are 20 - 25 questions in total across the three tasks.

The assessment contains some questions appropriate for achievement of the standard, achievement
with merit and achievement with excellence. Evidence from higher-level questions can provide
replacement evidence for lower achievement levels.

Contexts
Contexts used in the assessment activity will be selected from the following:
1. An outing / trip
2. Maori gatherings
3. Sports/Hobbies.

Format of the assessment
The candidate completes two pieces of writing, chosen form a range of writing tasks. Examples of
writing tasks may include descriptive, narrative, dialogue and report/letter writing.
The candidate’s writing across all tasks answered is assessed against the prepared ‘taumata o te reo’
(language standard descriptors) – see below. This enables the assessor to decide the grade achieved.

These levels of achievement are interpreted appropriately at Level 1 of Te Reo Maori i roto i te
Marautanga o Aotearoa, Te Pou Taki Korero, Ministry of Education, 1996.
