The Government of Kenya (GoK) intends to develop the Lamu Port-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor, an estimated USD 22 billion flagship project identified in the Kenya Vision 2030 economic blueprint. The Corridor will link the envisaged Port of Lamu with Ethiopia and Southern Sudan through the Eastern and Northern parts of Kenya. The LAPSSET project will comprise the Lamu Port at Manda Bay, an oil refinery at Lamu, a standard gauge railway line to Juba, oil pipelines to Southern Sudan and Ethiopia, three airports and three resort cities at Lamu, Isiolo and Lake Turkana shores. Construction of the first of three berths (Phase 1) of the Port of Lamu is set to commence in December 2011 with associated infrastructure (e.g. access roads, railway sidings, warehouses, buildings among others) at Hindi Magononi in Manda Bay, Lamu. The three berths will accommodate 100,000-dwt (deadweight tons) container ships, 30,000-dwt general cargo ships and 100,000-dwt bulk cargo carriers. The port will have a total of 22 berths with a quay that will lie on 1,000 acres of land and is expected to make Kenya a transshipment hub due to its deep waters and ability to accommodate large vessels. It is expected that the GoK will invite in the coming weeks, eligible construction firms for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to undertake the Lamu Port development project following completion of feasibility studies by Japanese Port Consultants, a GoK budgetary allocation of USD 5 million, and a call from Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki in July 2011 for fast-tracking of this project to ensure ground-breaking in December 2011.
