INSTRUCTION N4021R.01 (AUGUST 02) SA-1 positioner can be fitted on actuators with simple or double effect and operational stroke included between 3100 mm for reverse action and the spring extended. Besides, it has operational stroke included between 265 mm for direct and reverse action and the spring compressed for cylinder with max diameter 200. Their operating principle belongs to the force balance type with linear characteristics. SA-1 positioner is very compact and it can be fully installed on the servo-control system as shown in fig.1. The feed-back element consists in a spring having a linear characteristic, actuated by the piston movement: no external elements for movement intake are therefore required. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE. 1) Distribution box The modulation unit of SA-1 positioners consists in a shuttle valve (pos.6) feeding or releasing the two chambers of the cylinder. The shuttle valve (pos.6) is operated by the pack of membranes a-b-c with different areas by means of the stem (pos.13) and it is kept in contact by the spring (pos.2). 2) Feedback spring The feedback spring (pos.FS), which operates the pack of membranes a-b-c, is actuated by the piston (pos.P); its adjustment stroke is calibrated according to the actuator requirements. The perfect linearity of the spring produces a linear feedback force, proportional to the actuator force, on the pack of membranes. 3) Pack of membranes The pack of membranes a-b-c consists in three membranes locked together by some spacers (pos.19,33,26) by means of the screw (pos.16) and of a nut (pos.25). They are fitted on the casing of the positioner by means of three adjustable rings d1-d2-d3 (fig.2). The direct or reverse action is fixed by the orientation of the three rings. 4) Zero spring The zero spring (pos.15) operates on the pack of membranes in opposition to the force produced by the feedback spring (pos.FS) and by the signal on the pack of membranes. The adjustment screw (pos.31) allows the regulation of the preloading of the zero spring, which fixes the start of the piston movement (pos.P) in corrispondence of the control signal (3 Psi).

INSTRUCTION N4021R.01 (AUGUST 02) Operating principle Fig.1 shows a simple effect actuator with positioner fitted for direct action . The pressure of control signal applied on Instrument connection acts on b and c membranes, which have a different active section, and it produces an axial force upwards, proportional to the pressure value. It establishes the displacement of the shuttle valve (pos.6) upwards, increasing therefore the pressure inside the upper chamber of the piston through the hole pos.D. The piston of the actuator is actuated downwards until the decrease of the force of the feedback spring (pos.FS) brings to the force equilibrium on the pack of membranes and therefore to the readjustment of the shuttle valve in a neutral zone. The force produced by the air pressure on c membrane inside the upper chamber of the cylinder is balanced by the compensating membrane a through the balancing hole H (fig.4). Zero calibration Set the control signal at 3 Psi and adjust zero screw (pos.31) till obtainment of the start of the piston stroke. Field variation No field variations can be obtained with this model of positioner. The stroke of the actuator is given only by the characteristics of the feedback spring which is supplied already calibrated for the required stroke. Reversing the positioner sense of action Unscrew (without removing) the screws (27) from the pack of membranes and turn the adjustable rings (d1-d2-d3) and membranes a-b-c half turn; besides it is necessary to replace the spring plate R and the zero spring pos.15 (fig.1) . When the positioner is assembled on cylinders having both chambers under pressure, the equilibrium path (pos.H) will be open When the positioner is assembled on cylinders not having the upper chamber under pressure, the equilibrium path (pos.H) will be closed. REMARKS: for closing or opening the equilibrium path (pos.H) turn by 120 the internal support (pos.S). Installation The air feeding the positioner must be dry and without any impurity. Install on the air feeding connection a filter with a filtration degree of 5 Micron. If there are some traces of water or oil, they do not damage the positioner, but they could compromise its performances if it is working at temperature less than +5C. The connection of the positioner is usually made by 6X8 (or greater) copper pipe for the air supply and by 4X6 copper pipe for regulating signal 315 Psi. Servicing When the distribution box must be cleaned, you should proceed as follows: Close the feeding air Remove the plug (pos.1) and the spring with the plate (pos.2) Carefully remove the shuttle valve (pos.6) using tweezers Clean with detergent solution Clean the inside of the box without using tools which might ray or ruin the slip surfaces of the shuttle valve Do not grease the shuttle valve (pos.6).
