Genre Genre is the term for any category of literature. It refers to types or variety.

Which can also include other forms of art or culture. Genres are said to be formed by conventions that change over time. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions. It helps us classify the many works of art that are out there. Historical Fiction Historical fiction is a genre that tells a story that is set in the past. While the character tend to be fictional, the setting is usually real and drawn from history. The author has to carefully research the historical events he or she wants to talk about in the story so that it can be believable. For example, an author can set characters during the civil war, as long as the characteristic of the period are present in the story, the writer can play with the rest. Historical fiction is found in books, television and movies. Nonfiction The best definition for nonfiction is any text that is accurate or real. It is usually prose and tells the story of real people, places, objects, or events. Types of nonfiction include autobiographies, biographies, travel writing, memoirs, etc. It is defined, not by what it is, but by what it is not. It is not fiction. Fable Fables are usually short narratives that have a moral lesson. The main characteristic they have is how it uses animals as characters and they speak and behave like humans do. Fables were meant to be entertaining for the kids as a way of also teaching them something important. For example, The Turtle and the Hare. Its a classic fable with the lesson that is better to go slow and steady. Realistic Fiction A book is considered realistic fiction if the events of the story did not happen but could have. What that means is that the story can deal with realistic situations like family life, friendships or growing up. The characters are normal people like those you see at school or the supermarket. Anything from an ordinary day with ordinary people can be part of realistic fiction. The trick for it to be fiction is that the story has to be made up. Fantasy Fantasy is a genre that uses magic. The supernatural part is the main element of the plot, the theme or the setting. Magical creatures and characters with super powers belong in this genre. Most of the times this types of works are set in worlds were magic or the use of it is common. A popular example of this genre is Harry Potter. Folk Literature It is also called Folktale and it's a story that forms part of the oral tradition. It evolved from the traditional knowledge and believes of cultures that didn't have written language. The brothers Grimm gathered all the stories they could find from whoever will tell them and wrote them in books. Those

stories are part of the folk literature genre. Decades ago people would tell story by word, now all those story are part of literature because someone decided to write them down. Cross-genre When a work has more than one genre it is classified as cross-genre. Fiction that shares themes and elements from different classifications but still works as one. For example, tragicomedy comes from tragedy and comedy. Another example would be dark fantasy, comes from horror and fantasy. I think the most common genre that is shared is comedy.
