Immanuel and St.

Andrew CE Primary School Year 6 Class Bulletin Term 2 November 2011

Dear Parents, Carers and Children, We are now going into what is probably the busiest term of the school year. If the local supermarkets are anything to go by, Christmas is already here. Its not but it soon will be and I realise that the children will have lots of demands on their time, both inside and outside of school, however it is important that they make time to complete all their homework that is set for them and to a high standard. This includes spellings, reading at home as well as the literacy and numeracy homework they get each week. They must return it on the day it is expected in. They need to ensure it is of the same quality as I would expect in class and their presentation and handwriting should be neat. They should put a date and a title on their homework and underline both. Numeracy should be completed in pencil and Literacy in pen, although any drawings should be done in pencil. Your child will be provided with paper but if they require anymore they should ask me on Friday. If you are unsure of what your child has to do, it will be written in their green homework books. Homework is given out on Thursday and is expected to be handed in on the following Monday. This week I have had lots of excuses about why their homework has not been handed in, why it is not complete, why it is not neat or why they have not used correct paper, pen or pencil. If you are having difficulty with your child completing their homework at home, please speak to Miss Baker and sign your child up for homework club. Homework that is handed in without their name on it, will not be marked. Sorry to moan but it is very important that your child understands the importance of homework and that next year they will be expected to complete so much more homework daily. It is important that they get into good habits now to help prepare them for secondary school. If there is a good reason why your child has been unable to complete their homework, please write to me and inform me of this on the day the homework is due in. I will be available in the playground each morning before school if you would like to talk to me or you can email me on:

Many thanks, Natalie Pike

Literacy In literacy this term the children will be doing work related to last terms class novel, Skellig. We will be looking at characters, setting and the genre of narrative writing. Next week we will be watching the film of Skellig and making comparisons between the book and film. As it is a pg film a letter will be sent home for your permission before we watch the film. We will also be looking at autobiographies (non-fiction) and another narrative unit of work. Please remember that your child will be given spellings every Friday to be learnt by the following Friday when they will be tested. We are currently learning different spelling patterns that have appeared in the SATs spelling papers in the past. Reading Please make sure that your child is reading at home and that they bring it in daily in their reading bags. They should be responsible for completing their reading record book. If this is not completed I will assume they have not read. They should be reading every evening. They must use a dictionary to look up any unknown words. This will help with their comprehension. This term I will be sending home comprehension sheets for homework too. Please talk to your child about the books they are reading. This terms class novel is The London Eye Mysteries, this relates to our topic this term which is London.

Maths Children will complete units based on calculating, using number facts, partitioning, problem solving and reasoning, shape, measures and mental arithmetic. We will be doing weekly mental maths tests on a Friday and a timed times table test weekly. There will also be another SATs test practise this term. Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Science, History and Geography)
Our Creative Curriculum Topic this term is London and we start the topic off which a trip to the Houses of Parliament! In this topic we will be looking at famous people who were born and/or lived in London as well as the geography of London and historical events that occurred in and have helped to shape the London we know today. In preparation for our trip this week, we have learnt about the Houses of Parliament, both House of Commons and House of Lords, members of parliament and the voting process that puts these people into Parliament as well as looking at the House of Lords. We have also looked at the last General Election and discussed todays Government. In Science through Micro-Organism topic, we will be thinking creatively to try to explain how living and non-living things work, and to establish links between causes and effects [for example, Jenner's vaccination work]. We will look at how it is important to test ideas using evidence from observation and measurement. We will also ask questions that can be investigated scientifically and decide how to find answers. We will use a wide range of methods, including diagrams, drawings, tables, bar charts, line graphs and ICT, to communicate data in an appropriate and systematic manner and make comparisons and identify simple patterns or associations in their own observations and measurements or other data. We will decide whether these conclusions agree with any prediction made and/or whether they enable further predictions to be made.

Creative Development During our visit to the Houses of Parliament we will have the opportunity to observe and record amazing buildings and sights in the city centre. We will them use these to create our own landscape paintings to reflect and contrast the rural and urban aspects of cities and in particular London. Secondary School Tests I know that children will soon have to start sitting tests for their secondary schools (such a shame Lambeth have not adopted the one test for all schools as in Wandsworth!) Please let me know, prior to the test and in writing, the dates your child will be absent from school. As your child may have to go to a few chools it is important that your child is returned back to school as soon as possible. This will ensure limited disruption to your childs learning.

Kit required: navy shorts/tracksuit bottoms and pale blue t-shirt/dark sweatshirt. Trainers are needed Outdoor PE Mini Hockey Thursday afternoons.
