PREFERENCE
Principle:
The Manganous Sulphate reacts with alkali (KOH or NaOH) to form a white ppt of Manganous hydroxide which in the presence of oxygen gets oxidized to a brown colour compound. In the strong acid medium manganic ions are reduced by iodide ions which gets converted into iodine equivalent to the original concentration of oxygen in the sample. The iodine can be titrated against Sodium thiousulphate using starch as an indicator.
APPARATUS:
Conical flask 250 ml capacity. Measuring cylinder 100 ml capacity. Burette Pipettes
REAGENT : 1. Sodium thiosulphate 0.025 N : Dissolve 6.205 gms. of Na2S2O3.5H2O in boiled distilled water and make up to the volume 1 litre. Add 0.4 gms. of NaOH as stabilizer. This is 0.1 N stock solution. Dilute to 4 times with boiled water to prepare 0.025 N solution. 2. Alkaline potassium iodide solution
Dissolve 700 gm of KOH or 500 gms of NaOH and 150 gms of Kl in 1000 ml

3. Manganous Sulphate solution
Dissolve 364gms of MnSO4.H2O in 1000 ml of boiled distilled water and filter. It should not give colour with starch when added to an acidified potassium iodide.
4. Starch solution
Dissolve 1 gm of starch in 100 ml of warm (80OC - 90OC) distilled water and add few drops of formaldehyde solution.
5. Sulphuric acid
Pour 1 ml of each MnSO4 and alkaline Kl solution well below from the surface of walls. A ppt will appear. Shake the contents by inverting the bottle repeatedly. Keep the bottle for some time to settle down the ppt.
Titrate a volume corresponding to 100 or 200 ml of original sample after correction for sample loss by displacement with reagents. Thus for a total of 2 ml (1 ml each of MnSO4 & alkali Iodide Azide reagents in 300 ml bottles). Titrate the content against the sodium Thiosulphate solution make the straw colour & then add 2 drops of starch as indicator. At the end point initial dark blue colour changes to colourless.
