2012 University of Michigan Seven Week Sophomores Program June 17-August 4, 2012

Why should I attend the 2012 Michigan Seven Week Sophomores Program?
1. A Pattern of Success: The Winners and Top Speakers of the last seven Tournament of Champions are alums of the Michigan Seven Week Program. This year, alums of the 2011 Michigan Seven Week Program have won St. Marks, Greenhill, Michigan, New Trier, Bronx Science, Georgetown, Iowa Caucus, Long Beach, Meadows, Valley, and Samford. 2011 alums have won Top Speaker this year at St. Marks, Greenhill, Georgetown, Iowa Caucus, New Trier, Valley, and Samford. 2011 alums have received 83 bids to the Tournament of Champions! Practice Debates: Each member of the 2012 Seven Week Sophomores Program will participate in over two dozen full-length practice debates during the course of the summer. 2011 Seven Week alum Evan McCarty participated in 34 full-length debates last summer. Lectures: Attendees of the 2012 Michigan Seven Week Sophomores Program will attend dozens of lectures from Seven Week Faculty. Evidence: In numerous waves of assignments, the 2012 Michigan Seven Week Sophomores Program will produce several thousand pages of evidence and receive thousands of pages of additional evidence from the other five Michigan Seven Week Seniors and Juniors Labs.

I think Tim Alderete and Sara Sanchez should do a Seven Week lab next year. They are the best lab leaders, judges and instructors Ive ever had at debate camp. Thank you very much. Tim Alderete, Debate Coach at The Meadows School of Las Vegas Debate coach for 23 years. Tim has taught over 35 labs at institutes, including Michigan, Northwestern, Appleton and Stanford. His students have reached the elimination rounds of every major tournament in the country, including state championships in Illinois, Michigan and Nevada. Students from Tims sophomore labs have gone on to win every major debate championship, including The Tournament of Champions, NFL Nationals, National Catholic Forensic League Nationals, and the National Debate Tournament. Tim has unmatched experience teaching young debaters, having taught the Michigan Classic for Sophomores lab for the last 16 years. This will be his fourth summer working with Sara Sanchez at the Michigan Debate Institutes. Maria Liu, Senior Debater at the University of Michigan and Assistant Debate Coach at The Harker School Maria is a three-time elimination round participant at the National Debate Tournament. This year, she was a semifinalist at the University of Kentucky Henry Clay Debates and Octafinalist at Georgia State University. In 2010-2011, Maria was a semifinalist at the National Debate Tournament, winner of the University of Georgia Tournament, won third place at the University of Kentucky Round Robin, and was a quarterfinalist at Harvard University, Wake Forest University, the University of Southern California and California State University at Fullerton. She debated at Okemos High School and reached the elimination rounds of many Tournament of Champions bid tournaments. Maria has already been accepted to the University of Michigan Law School as part of the Wolverine Scholars program. She is a past participant of the Michigan Debate Institutes and this will be her fourth year as a faculty member at the Michigan Seven Week Program. Sara Sanchez, Director of Debate at Lexington High School In 2010-2011 Sara coached the finalists at the Tournament of Champions, The Blake School and Lakeland Champions and the winners of the Harvard and Michigan Round Robins. Last year Lexington High School qualified more teams to the Tournament of Champions (5) than any other school in the country. Saras had a team in the elimination rounds of the Tournament of Champions 7 of the last 8 years, dating back to her time as an Assistant Coach at Rowland Hall-St. Mark's. Her teams have consistently reached the late elimination rounds of every major national tournament including the NDCA National Championship and NFL Nationals. This will be Saras fourth summer working with Tim Alderete at the Michigan Debate Institutes.
