Leadership & Management

While Leadership is easy to explain; leadership is not easy to practice

Leadership

Most people do not seek to be a leader
Are leaders born Are leaders developed Leadership is an approach of providing direction,

implementing plans and motivating people.

Styles of Leadership
Autocratic ( Authoritarian)
Participative ( Democratic) Delegative ( Free Reign)

Autocratic (Authoritarian) Style

It is when the leader tells his employees or team members with authority; what he wants done? and how he wants it done?

Autocratic (Authoritarian) Style

When is it appropriate to use it? All information to solve a problem is available, time is short to reach consensus decision, employees are well motivated and the style is discretely used.

Autocratic Style
Inappropriate use
Some leaders use it as a standard for every situation;

that's how they perceive they can get results. Use demeaning language and lead by threats and abuse of their power. The employee perception is; it is an unprofessional style called bossing around. The leader should remove this perception from his/her leadership tool box

Participative(Democratic) Style
The leader involves more people in the decision

making; determining what to do and how to do it.

However the decision making authority remains with

the leader.

Participative (Democratic) Style

Some employees may perceive weakness on the part of

the leader, though it is not a sign of weakness rather it is a sign of strength that the employees feel they have ownership and value in the decision making and will definitely respect the leader.

Participative(Democratic) Style
Leader has part of the information and employees

have the other part of the information. It works well when you are knowledgeable and have skillful employees. It results in a mutual benefit and helps in team building.

Delegative (Free Reign) Style

The leader allows the employees /team members make

the decisions, however still being responsible for the decisions made. The leader sets the goals and priorities and delegate certain tasks to the employees/team

Delegative (Free Reign) Style

The strength of this style is when the employees/team

members are able to analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it. The style is perceived as the leader abdicating responsibility. Only to be used wisely when the leader has full trust and confidence of people on the team.

Forces of Influence on Styles

How much time is available? Relationships are based on trust and respect or on

disrespect Who has the information Leader or/ team member

Forces of Influence on Styles

Are employees trained well and know the task. Internal conflicts Stress levels

Forces of Influence on Styles

Are tasks, structured or unstructured or complicated

or simple Are laws or procedures established
