Paul Jutte of Coldwater was one of 78 veterans selected to
participate in the recent October 22, Honor Flight Columbus to
Washington, D.C. The mission of Honor Flight is to transport
Americas veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials
dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
89-year-old Jutte met his assigned guardian, Betsy Money, at
the Port Columbus Airport. She traveled with him for the next 15
hours, caring for all his needs and escorting him to the scheduled
tours. These included the WW II and the Iwo Jima memorials
along with the Arlington National Cemetery where they witnessed
the Changing of the Guard. A bus tour of D.C. was included
before departing for the Baltimore airport. Meals and snacks were
provided through-out the day. Bagpipes welcomed the Veterans
when they arrived back at the Columbus airport along with a
welcoming group of 1200 persons that included families, friends,
members of the service, and
boy and girl scouts.
Paul is an Army Veteran,
lifelong resident of Mercer
County, and father of six
children. 10 days later, he is
still enthusiastically talking
about his trip. His son, Dave,
listens with a smile and shakes
his head as his father talks about
his adventure. When ask what
was most memorable? Paul
replied that no one thing stood
out as it was all new and very
exciting to him.
The program will naturally
transition to Korean War,
Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological
basis. Time is running out for World War II Veterans and it is of
the utmost importance that veterans, healthy enough to travel, apply
for this opportunity ASAP. Paul and his family highly recommend
anyone interested and eligible to give this immediate consideration.
They have offered to help with information on applying and the
logistics of the application. More information can be found on the
web at http://honorflightcolumbus.org/ This Honor Flight was
sponsored by the Nationwide Insurance Foundation who paid for the
entire cost of the trip.
Will Rogers said, We cant all be heroes. Some of us have to
stand on the curb and clap as they go by. Thank you, Paul Jutte,
and all our Veterans who served us so unselfishly. You make us
proud. Clap, Clap!
Veteran Paul Jutte humbled by Honor Flight Columbus
Ellen Bryan, the reigning Miss
Ohio, spoke to the Coldwater
Kiwanis Club on November 1,
2011. Ellen, a recent graduate of
Ball State University, supports
two platforms during her tenure
lightning safety and the
Childrens Miracle Network. .
Ellen described her journey from
a Celina youngster to a contestant
for Miss America later this
summer. She described a life-
changing moment
for her that occurred
when her sister was
struck by lightning in
2000. That incident
motivated her to
make lightning safety
and the Childrens
Miracle Network as
her platforms. She
completed a 26-day,
850-mile bike tour
in September to raise
money for Childrens
Miracle Network and
stopped at each of the
Network hospitals
in Ohio during that
tour. A Ball State
professor in her field
telecommunications
- encouraged her to
enter pageants after
he found that a former
Miss Florida had been hired as
a news journalist in a good-sized
TV market. Ellen competed in
and won the title of Miss Lake
Festival. Then she went on to
the Miss Ohio Pageant where she
competed three times and was
named Miss Ohio on her third
try. She said the scholarship
money that she earned in the
pageants has covered most of her
college costs.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

These days, you can purchase just about anything you want on the Internet. However, you can still benefit
from a human, face-to-face experience for some purchases such as your investments. And thats why you
may want to work with a financial professional.
Unlike a computer interface, a financial professional will take the time to truly know your situation today
and then help you make adjustments tomorrow.
Lets first look at two key areas a financial professional will consider today:
* Your risk tolerance By asking the right questions, a financial professional can help you determine
if youre a moderate, conservative or aggressive investor and then recommend those investments that are
suitable for your risk tolerance.
* Your time horizon If youre saving for a down payment on a new home you expect to purchase
within two or three years, you may want an investment that offers significant preservation of principal. But if
youre saving for retirement, and youre three decades away from it, youll likely need investments that offer the
potential for growth. Your financial advisor can help you choose the mix of short- and long-term investments
that can help you make progress toward all your goals.
Now, lets look at the types of milestones that a financial professional can help you with as your life
progresses:
* New child When you bring a new child into your life, you also add new responsibilities. Do you have
sufficient life insurance? Do you plan on helping the child pay for college? If so, what college funding vehicles
should you consider? Afinancial professional can help you answer these questions.
* New spouse Whether youre getting married for the first time, or youre remarrying, youll have
to reconcile your financial picture with that of your new spouse. A financial professional can review both your
situations and possibly recommend ways for you to reduce debt, eliminate redundancies in your investment
portfolios and consolidate insurance coverage.
* Career change When you change jobs, you may have to make many investment-related decisions:
Should you move the assets from your old employers 401(k) to an IRA? Or should you roll over your old
401(k) to your new employers plan, if a rollover is allowed? Knowing your options when you leave your job
can help you make the right choice for your retirement savings. Aqualified financial professional can help you
review and understand your rollover options.
* Retirement Once you retire, youll have several issues to consider: How much can you withdraw
from your investments each year? From which accounts? Should you rebalance your portfolio to provide more
potential sources of income? What about the transfer of your wealth? A financial professional who is familiar
with your situation can help you make the right moves to enjoy the retirement lifestyle youve envisioned.

I will be the first to say there are
times when this column only writes
about bad news. And with our
President that doesnt take a lot of
effort to find some bad news. But
today I have some GOOD news.
It all comes from the unemployment
news. First off, the average hourly
wages rose 5 cents a week, to $23.19.
More pay for workers means they
have more spending power in the
economy. 5 cents doesnt sound like
much but in the overall picture it
means at least an increase.
August and September turned
out to be much better months for
job creation than first thought. The
nation added 104,000 jobs in August
and 158,000 in September, a total of
102,000 more that earlier estimates.
The August figure was first reported
as zero.
The number of people considered
long-term unemployed, meaning
they have been looking for work for
at least six months, fell by 366,000,
to 5.9 million. That is the fewest
since April.
All of this information was
reported in the Lima News and I
bring it to you only because I realize
not all of you have access to a city
paper. It was such good news I felt it
would be appropriate to do so at this
time. Maybe things are starting to
turn around for this nation. Although
this isnt much good news still it is a
hope to hold to during these times as
the Unites States tries to get back on
her feet.
Thats My Opinion.............

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

Dancing with the Stars

We are in the thirteenth season
of Dancing with the Stars. I didnt
intend to watch this one from the
beginning. The Sing Off is on
another network at the same time
and I started with that. It was
enjoyable, but after thirty minutes,
I felt drawn to the ABC channel.
With the music, the costumes
and the foot work, I couldnt
turn it off. There is something
about the movement and the
coordination that fascinates me.
And since the show is in the top
ten most weeks, other viewers
must feel the same attraction.
A friend suggested I watch,
but I never thought about it on
Mondays until midway through
Season Six. Ive had favorites,
but havent voted. Some years
the winner can almost be guessed
after the first show. The athletes,
understandably, usually seem to
fare well. And then again there
are surprises. Most people didnt
think that Kirstie Alley would get
as far as she did. And you have to
give Cloris Leachman and Buzz
Aldrin credit for giving it a shot.
It cant be easy. But Im silly
enough to think I could do that.
At one point, I thought I
would try one of the Dancing
with the Stars exercise videos.
The professionals were good at
explaining the steps, but I had
trouble following along. So I
thought maybe I should start with
something easier than a Latin
dance. Switching from Maks and
the Samba to Kym and a Jive
didnt help. How about a Swing?
That couldnt be too bad. Wrong
again! At first I told myself my
dancing space was too small.
But lets be honest, it wasnt the
house, it was the dancer. So now
Im doing step aerobics to work
on my coordination and stamina.
Next I may move on to Zumba.
Those classes combine dance and
fitness moves. If I could handle
that, I might be ready for Dancing
with the Stars. But first I have
to figure out a way to be a star
before ABC will be calling. Let
me work on that. Keep smiling.

area businesses during the
80th annual FFA banquet.

is awarded to businesses
that donate to benefit the
Parkway FFAChapter and
local community. The
three businesses were

Ohio Farm Bureau
Hosts Grow and
Know Day
Attendees can learn skills to
manage their property
The growing popularity of
gardening, food preservation
and other back to basics
topics will be the focus of a
new day-long seminar spon-
sored by the Ohio Farm Bu-
reau Federation.
The first ever Grow and
Know Days will be held
July 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at the Bob Evans Farm in Rio
Grande. The event is billed as
a how-to seminar for property
owners, animal lovers, gar-
deners and food enthusiasts.
Its going to be a great day
of hands-on learning, said
Cara Lawson, promotion spe-
cialist for Ohio Farm Bureau
and one of the coordinators
for the event. This program-
ming is in direct response to
members wanting this sort of
information.
Attendees will be able to
select four different breakout
sessions with topics including
gardening, backyard egg pro-
duction, horse ownership,
food preparation and preser-
vation, fruit and nut tree man-
agement, property protection,
herb production, fence and
barn maintenance, beekeep-
ing and more.
Cost to participate is $25
for Farm Bureau members
and $85 for non members,
(which includes a member-
ship). In addition to the pro-
gram, registration includes a
Bob Evans cookout lunch on
the farm. Registration dead-
line is July 1. Event registra-
tion can be made by calling
614-246-8276 or visit
OurOhio.org for ticket infor-
mation, programdescriptions
and more Grow and Know
experiences, including cook-
ing and gardening competi-
tions.
The vision of the Ohio
Farm Bureau Federation is to
create a partnership between
farmers and consumers. In ad-
dition to farmers, members
include gardeners, food and
wine enthusiasts, animal own-
ers, and anyone who enjoys
rural Ohio.
Fresh Country Air
MATT REESE
My job as an agricultural
journalist is fun because it al-
lows me to travel this fascinat-
ing state on a regular basis, of-
ten on Ohios 26 beautiful des-
ignated scenic byways (five of
which have a national designa-
tion). The five National Scenic
Byways in the state highlight
some of the states finest fea-
tures, including Ohios bounti-
ful agricultural production.
Lake Erie Coastal National
Scenic Byway
June is wine month and there
is no better route in the Midwest
to travel for fine wines than
Ohios northern coast. Ohios
wine business is booming and
gaining more international rec-
ognition every year for its high
quality wine production along
the temperate shores of Lake
Erie.
This route also offers ample
natural attractions for fishing
and bird enthusiasts and the
thrill-seeking appeal of Cedar
Point. Roller coasters, walleye
and wine, how can you go
wrong?
Historic National Road
National Scenic Byway
Much of this byway is lined
with interesting agricultural at-
tractions. Dull Homestead Farm
in Montgomery County features
a diversified operation including
hogs and seed corn, but the real
attention getter is the farms tow-
ering windmills and dedication to
renewable energy. The Dulls
have a visitors center to inform
guests about the farm. Devine
Farms and Pigeon Roost Farm in
Licking County offer pumpkins
and a myriad of fun family ori-
ented activities in the late sum-
mer and fall. The trip through
Belmont County passes near the
states largest Christmas tree
farm run by the Feisley family.
The renowned Dickinson Cattle
Co. Longhorn Cattle Ranch is
also near the route, just outside
of Barnesville. Also, be sure to
note the productive corn and soy-
bean fields lining much of Route
40 that are pumping dollars into
the economy and biofuels into
our vehicles.
Amish Country National
Scenic Byway
Few routes through Ohio of-
fer more picturesque glimpses of
modern and Amish agriculture
than this byway winding through
the heart of the nations largest
Amish community in and around
Holmes and Wayne counties.
Grazing dairy cattle, rolling hay
fields and plenty of down home
Amish appeal (and merchandise)
attract many visitors each year.
Ohio leads the nation in Swiss
cheese production, and ranks
high in other types of cheese pro-
duction, largely due to this region
of the state.
Ohio River National Scenic
Byway
It is hard to beat the rolling
landscape, charming towns, his-
torical and agricultural attractions
that ooze from this 452-mile
route along the Ohio River
through 14 counties. Afewof my
favorite stops along the way, or
nearby the designated byway, in-
clude Sweetapple Farms (agri-
tainment), Stacy Family Farms
(strawberries) and Grimms
GreenAcres (apples) in Washing-
ton County; the bridge from
Galia County to Point Pleasant,
West Virginia, home of the mys-
terious Mothman that inspired a
book and movie; the appealing
murals in Portsmouth; and some
tasty Montgomery Inn ribs and a
Reds game in Cincinnati.
The Canal Way National
Scenic Byway
This byway runs from Cleve-
land to Dover along the path of the
Ohio and Erie Canal and offers
several agricultural destinations.

During warmer-weather
months, parents have a wonder-
ful opportunity to teach their
kids about how to enjoy the
beauty of nature safely. With
the right knowledge and a well-
stocked first-aid kit, families
can steer clear of injury and
infection in the wilderness.
Here are some tips for picking
the best safety supplies before
a family hike through the open
air:
1. Save your skin: Dont
forget to protect your skin by
applying UVA/UVB full-pro-
tection sunscreen at least 10
minutes before you set out.
2. Back off, bugs: Make sure
your first-aid kit includes insect
repellent to fend off any flies or
mosquitoes you might run into
along the way.
3. Accidents happen: Should
something unexpected occur,
make sure your kit includes ad-
hesive bandages, antibiotic oint-
ments and alcohol wipes-CVS/
pharmacy offers a First Aid Kit
with all of these products, plus
CVS Brand Peas Cold Therapy
packs, sterile gauzes, bandages
and other first-aid necessities.
4. Check the kits regularly:
Remember to replace missing
items or medicines that may
have expired.

The Lost Wife
By Alyson Richman
Reviewed by
Skeet Wolters
Attention artistic friends, you
will especially appreciate this novel.
This book is a very different take
on the innocent people that Hitler
abused and tortured. The Lost
Wife, by Alyson Richman, is a
novel of historical fiction relating
to the WWII and the holocaust,
Czechoslovakian Prison Camp of
Terezin and Auschwitz. It is spring,
1934, and the characters are living
a happy, good life in Prague as the
Germans enter the city. Talented
artist, Lenka, and Josef are just
newly married when this came
about. Josef and his family have
papers to sail to America but Lenka
will not leave her family behind.
Joseh and his family live in England
for several years trying to obtain
papers for all of Lenkas family.
In 1939, on their way to American
the SS Athenia sank with Josef and
his family on board. All of Josefs
family died with the exception of
Josef, who survived and arrived in
America.
Josef thinks Lenka must be dead
and Lenka believes he died also.
Lenka and her family are taken
to Camp Terezin where they are
literally worked to death. Lenka,
being an artist, is given a job in
the Technical Department doing
drawings. Real names and artist are
depicted working here. I found some
of the artwork that was smuggled
out of the camp on the internet.
All of the remaining drawings are
in the Jewish Museum of Prague.
I enjoyed the art influence of the
difficult times and how the artist
endured.
The novel comes full circle as it
begins with the wedding of Josefs
grandson. The ending brings in
the grandmother of the bride who
is Lenka. Both had remarried but
the ghost of this first love lived on
in their hearts. The story goes back
and forth between Josef, Lenka, and
their sad lives covering sixty years.
The Lost Wife will join titles on
Skeets Favorite List that include
books on the Holocaust and WWII.
I highly recommend The Winter
Garden, by Kristin Hanna, and
Sarahs Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay.
Happy reading. Skeet

AGAIN
It is the same story we have
seen for the past several years.
We had five football teams from
the MAC qualify for the football
playoffs this fall. Two squads,
Marion and Delphos St. Johns,
hosted home games last week
since they were seeded among the
top four teams in their regions.
Versailles, Minster, and Coldwater
were official underdogs in their
initial contests and played at
the fields of the higher seeded
schools. After the initial weekend
play, the MAC was five wins and
no defeats with a combined total
score of MAC Teams, 235 points,
and the opposition, 41. These
numbers are actually misleading,
as most of the MAC teams called
in the dogs long before the final
whistle. If not for class action
by our coaches, the local teams
could have put up approximately
300 points fairly easily and really
hammered some schools. I
would suggest this weekends
results demonstrate again that we
play superior small school football
in the MAC. I would also suggest
the results could mean the states
method of choosing qualifiers for
the post season playoffs is far less
than perfect. The present method
used by the Ohio High School
Athletic Association awards
teams that have the most wins
and particularly favors schools
with victories over other teams
having strong won/lost records.
The system appears fair, but it is
evident again this year that some
teams qualified which should
have stayed home and started
conditioning for basketball. Anna,
or perhaps Parkway and Fort
Recovery, would have been more
worthy opponents than some of
the teams we saw in the playoffs.
I might offer two possible Off the
Wall changes to Ohios present
football playoff format. Last year
the OHSAA submitted a proposal
to the member schools which
would penalize schools who had
exceptional success in tournament
play in previous years. Successful
schools could be moved to a bigger
division to give the other smaller
schools a better chance for success.
The proposal failed, but could not
similar thinking give a break to all
teams playing in a super successful
conference like the MAC? I
would suggest that a vast majority
of the 64 teams which qualified
for State playoffs this year would
not have done so if they played a
MAC conference schedule. The
smart guys could come up with
a formula in which victories in
proven successful conferences
should count more than wins in
the leagues whose representatives
are annually one and out. A
second possibility might look like
this. A state football champion
needs to win five playoff games.
There are currently 32 teams in
each state playoff division. Two
more playoff games would allow
128 teams to participate, which
would give every school in the
state a chance to compete for the
championship. This would be
similar to basketball, baseball,
volleyball, and every other high
school sport. I propose teams
play an eight game regular season.
The ninth week would be the first
state play round. Half the teams
in the state would be guaranteed
a minimum of ten games under
this format. First round losers
would be free to schedule a tenth
game if they wanted, from a pool
that would include half the teams
in the state. With this format the
state finals would end two weeks
earlier than present. Football is
classified by the State as a fall,
not a winter, activity and many
cold spectators would not object
to a chance for better playoff
