Respite
Care Your Way
Respite Care Benets Everyone
Respite is a break from the
ongoing demands of providing
care for a family member who
has a disability or chronic health
condition. Wesway offers short-
term care which gives family
caregivers some time to renew
their energy. Respite care is
a crucial part of the overall
support many people need when
caring for a family member
at home. Wesway strives for
e[ibility in accommodating
the strengths, needs and
preferences of each family we
serve. Care can take place in
the familys own home, the
home of a volunteer or in one
of our Respite Homes. Respite
may also include support
for individuals to participate
more fully in the life of our
community.
Families
The responsibilities of
ongoing 24-hour care
can be stressful and
e[hausting. Respite
provides a break for
family caregivers to
enjoy some personal
time or simply get much
needed rest. Periods
of respite help sustain
the strength of family
caregivers so they can
continue their vital role
of caring for their family
member at home.
Participants
Respite helps people
with a disability or
chronic health condition
to continue living
at home with their
families. For many
participants young
children, teens, adults
or seniors respite
offers opportunities
to socialize, pursue
interests, build
condence and
participate in community
activities.
Community
Respite helps caregivers
and their family
members contribute
to the life of the
community. $ e[ible
range of respite services
helps build a stronger
community with support
networks that are
inclusive and caring of
all citizens.
Who Is Eligible?
The geographical area
served by Wesway
includes the City of
Thunder Bay and
communities in the
Districts of Thunder
Bay, Kenora and Rainy
River. Eligible families
are responsible for the
ongoing care of a family
member who lives
with them. The family
member must have a
chronic health condition
or a disability, such as a
developmental
disability, autism
spectrum disorder, a
physical disability, a
frail condition related
to aging, Alzheimer
Disease or a related
dementia. 6pecic
eligibility is determined
by factors dening
Wesways funding
sources and the age,
diagnosis, circumstances
and location of each
individual. For more
detailed information
about service eligibility,

Wesways
Personalized
Focus
Service Planning
At Wesway, we listen. We tailor
our services to meet the distinctive
needs of each family we serve.
Were proud of our reputation for
e[ibility, diversity and innovation.
Based on eligibility, funding and
other resources, we work in
partnership with families to create
personalized service plans built on
individual strengths, needs and
preferences. After service plans
are approved, family caregivers
are encouraged to arrange their
periods of respite directly with
their workers or volunteers. No one
can predict when an emergency
might occur a death, illness, or
other e[traordinary situation. We
strive to support families through
some of lifes most difcult respite
care challenges. There are no fees
for Wesways respite care services.
Host Families
After careful screening and
matching, volunteer Host
Families provide periods
of respite by welcoming
a child or adult with a
disability into their home.
The hosts include the
individual in their family
activities for a few hours,
or an occasional overnight
or a weekend.
In-Home Service
When the needs of
individuals are better met
at home, trained Respite
Workers carry out the
care routines usually
performed by the family
caregiver. This type of
service can occur regularly
or variably. During a period
of respite, our workers
may assist participants in
the enjoyment of various
activities with a focus on
their needs, interests and
personal safety. If a family
desires, periods of respite
may take place outside of
the home.
Community Friends
Individuals with a disability
are matched with carefully
screened volunteers who
share their time every
week or two or perhaps
monthly. Together they
enjoy a few hours of social
or recreational activities in
the community.
Respite Homes
A variety of respite services
are available in Wesways
comfortable home-like
settings. With the support
of trained Respite Workers,
small groups of participants
engage in daily life
routines and enjoy social
and recreational activities
tailored to their interests.
The Weekend Service offers
respite from Friday through
Sunday, and the Weekday
Service runs from Sunday
to Tuesday. Wesway
may offer other respite
opportunities during the
week, including overnights.
Family Directed
Respite Funding
Wesway administers this
type of respite for families
living in communities
throughout the District
of Thunder Bay. Families
decide how they would
like to receive their respite
service and Wesway pays
for the associated costs.
Detailed contracts are
developed with families
in accordance with clearly
dened eligibility criteria
and available resources.
In limited circumstances,
families within the City
of Thunder Bay may be
eligible for Family-Directed
Respite Funding.
A Flexible Range of Respite Services
Wesway gratefully acknowledges the funding we receive from
the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Community
and Social Services/Ministry of Child and Youth Services.

As someone who
used Wesways
services, I truly
understand the
value of respite
care. My partner
Roger was diag-
nosed with Front
Temporal Lobe
Dementia (Pick's
Disease). His personality changed,
he became mute and ultimately
lost the use of his arms and
legs. Together with family and
friends, I cared for him around the
clock. The strain on everyone was
intense. When I was hospitalized
for surgery in 2003, Wesway
stepped in to help. Thus began a
wonderful relationship with
Wesway that continued to Rogers
death in 2006. I was able to plan
activities that helped retain close
ties with family and friends.
Wesway was a "gift" that likely
saved my sanity. I am proud to
give back to the organization by
serving on the Board of Directors.
Wesway strives to prevent
burnout by helping family care-
givers take the breaks they need
to renew their energy and contin-
ue caring for their loved ones at
home. This reduces visits to emer-
gency departments, decreases
unnecessary admissions to hospi-
tals and long-term care homes,
and reduces alternate level of care
(ALC) pressures and length of
hospital stays for seniors.
Funded by the Provinces Aging at
Home Strategy, we are thrilled
with the success of our respite ser-
vices for seniors in communities
both East and West of Thunder
Bay. These pilot projects feature
flexibility, a family-centred
approach and practical, grassroots
community connections. Through
evaluation of our work, it became
clear that most individuals we
serve meet the eligibility require-
ments for long-term care, and
their family caregivers are often in
poor health. Respite may be the
pivotal element that enables them
to continue living with dignity at
home. We are delighted to confirm
that our services in the region will
be ongoing.
Wesway applauds the North West
Local Health Integration Network
(LHIN) for recognizing the vital
role family caregivers play. Our
health system would collapse
without the dedication and sacri-
fice of these family caregivers.
Wesway fully supports the LHINs
strategic directions, which align
closely with our own goals to
maximize the effective use of
scarce resources.
Despite positive news about ser-
vice expansion for seniors, our
funding remains insufficient to
meet the rising demand. The
Wesway Board is gravely con-
cerned by the severe shortage of
funds for adults between the ages
of 18 and 64 who have a devel-
opmental and/or physical disabili-
ty. Our services dont come close
to meeting the true need.
Tragically, when children reach the
age of 18, we are forced to stop
their respite. Their names are
added to a long waiting list for
service. This is crushing news for
many families. As they continue
caring for their adult children at
home, these aging parents need
respite more than ever. Wesway
continues to push the Ministry of
Community and Social Services for
acceptable funding levels for
adults with a developmental dis-
ability. We also urge the Ministry
of Health and Long-Term Care to
consider a provincial strategy to
address the needs of adults with a
physical disability.
The public is bombarded daily
with warnings about aging baby
boomers that will soon overwhelm
our health care system. Creative
solutions are essential.
Unquestionably, preventive com-
munity support services such as
respite care will play a crucial role
in managing the demographic
realities of the future.
In celebration of Community
Support Month in Ontario, Im
privileged to offer greetings and
best wishes to our friends in
Thunder Bay and communities
throughout Northwestern Ontario.
I hope you enjoy reading this spe-
cial edition. We are extremely
grateful to Wesways families, vol-
unteers and staff who have will-
ingly shared their personal stories.
We salute their strength and com-
mitment, and we honour the
tremendous part they play in sus-
taining the community care sys-
tem for future generations.

Call for Volunteers to Serve on Wesways Board of Directors
Collectively, the members of Wesways volunteer Board of Directors encompass a wide range of skills, knowledge and life experi-
ences. One third of the Board is comprised of families who are connected to our services, which helps the organization remain
strategically focused on the changing needs of the people we serve. The remaining members represent the broader external envi-
ronment, with representatives who have backgrounds in business, finance, education and other key sectors. This blend of abilities
strengthens our Boards capacity to define the future of our organization. For information about becoming a member of Wesways
Board of Directors, please call Wesway at 623-2353 or email respite@wesway.com.

Recovery. Be it economic, financial
or physical, there is much in the
media on the issue of recovery in
Europe, North America and within
our province of Ontario. Yet those of
us here in the North understand
that recovery is not always possible.
Resources dwindle demand
slackens trends change All of
which can lead to demise rather
than recovery. How do we resolve
these deep rooted problems? Do we
continue following the same beaten
path? Or is it time for fresh and cre-
ative reasoning?
In the human services field, we are
challenged to address the old prob-
lems of too little funds to serve too
many needs and lengthy waiting
lists. We now have the additional
reality of the early baby boomers
turning age sixty-five. This bur-
geoning wave of demographic
change is certain to overwhelm the
continued needs of adults, youth
and children. Service providers are
becoming attuned to the inherent
wisdom of effective change soon!
Discussions now focus on doing
things differently, realigning
resources and overcoming barriers.
The air is electric with determination
and obvious enthusiasm an
enthusiasm not shared at all levels.
Bureaucratic frameworks through
their ministries, programs, projects,
agencies, divisive funding streams
and complex reporting systems are
more prolific in their silo structures
than the shoreline of Thunder Bays
harbour. Truly, there is an opportu-
nity to lead a process of profound
change. Placing families at the cen-
tre of a service delivery model
would be a fresh start. Provide ser-
vice in an integrated fashion across
the lifespan of people and communi-
ties with a genuine spirit of collabo-
ration. This would go a long way
toward streamlining government
structures.
The problems our communities face
in supporting families didnt occur in
discrete pockets of unrelated social
pressures. Surely the solutions will
not come from scattered policies and
directives, but rather through an
integrated approach.

mance award for achieving over 250,000 safe hours. The employees

During the Labour Day weekend of
2009, I drowned in our swimming
pool. I had a cardiac arrest while I
was in the pool with Erika, one of
the girls we host through Wesway.
Not good. My son fished me out
and did CPR until the paramedics
and firefighters arrived. I was resus-
citated and rushed to hospital. I
wasn't mentally around for
September and my wife was pretty
sure that we would be moving from
our status as givers of help to
receivers of help. Knowing that
there were services like Wesway
that would help her care for a very
disabled me, provided some hope.
But, by the end of October, things
had improved. My Implantable
Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) had been
installed, my brain was functioning
again and I was out of the hospital.
We knew life would be different in
many ways. I certainly wasn't the
strong capable guy I had been
before. We figured that the host
family volunteering we had been
doing for about nine years would be
gone, just one of many unwanted
changes in our lives.
The next few months were very dif-
ficult for us. After two more cardiac
arrests we moved to a smaller one
storey house. I had lots of medical
appointments and our world had
shrunk so much. The families of our
Wesway girls were part of our
extensive support system through
these difficult months, making sure
we knew they were cheering for us.
They told us to just take the time
we needed. Although we weren't
ready to have the girls for a week-
end, we started to take them for a
couple of hours here and there.
They provided us with some needed
diversion. Larissa's love of shopping
and going to the libraries got my
wife out of the confines of the
house and away from the focus on
me. I found Larissa's high energy
encouraged me. Erikas love of
swimming, walking and going
places got me out too. So it turned
out to be a win-win. As always,
there was never any pressure on
us. Their families always tell us that
they appreciate any time we are
able to spend with the girls. We
appreciate being appreciated.
Over the last year I haven't had any
more cardiac arrests. We have
adjusted to our new home, and
have been able to take up traveling
again. We have been fitting visits
with the girls around our increas-
ingly busy schedule and have just
started doing weekend hosting
again. The families are always real-
ly good about keeping our times
flexible. It turns out that we were a
receiver of Wesway services - just
not in the way we expected.
Thanks guys. You brighten our
lives!

It will be a bittersweet day when
John Schmidt locks the doors to
Wesways Respite Home at Andras
Court for the final time. After nearly
ten years, the place evokes infinite
memories of special times with par-
ticipants, families, staff, students
and volunteers. Yet, with the grow-
ing demand for Wesways Respite
Home Services and the changing
needs of the people we serve, its
time to move forward into a new era
of exciting possibilities.
In a few weeks, Wesway will cut the
ribbon on two new Respite Homes
on Jean Street, marking another
milestone in Wesways proud history
of family-focused services. The two
distinct Respite Homes, each with its
own entrance and parking, are con-
tained within one brand new two-
storey duplex. The lower level is to
be used by adults, while the upper
floor will serve children. Both units
are bright, spacious and fully
equipped for participants with physi-
cal challenges. The childrens home
will have a great yard for outdoor
activities.
Not far away, Wesways Respite
Home located at Luther Court has
been operating since 2004. Its
warm, roomy and inviting interior
offers a welcome setting for the
senior population served by
Wesway. We recently added a green
space, where folks enjoy the readily
accessible outdoor garden area.
One of our goals was to provide
inclusive environments that are
truly part of their respective neigh-
bourhoods. We strive to create
spaces that feel as close to home for
participants as possible including
home cooking! says John.
The Respite Home model of service
dates back to Wesways early roots
in the 1970s when Wesway rented
a place on the citys south side.
Jean Lesyk explains, Our Respite
Home services have really grown
and evolved over the years. And
weve enjoyed wonderful partnership
opportunities with many other com-
munity groups and organizations
that proved to be mutually beneficial.
Jean adds, Weve also been
extremely fortunate with our caring,
dedicated and creative staff members
who are so committed to serving the
unique needs of each participant. We
play Wii, make crafts, go on picnics,
visit parks, attend baseball games
you name it! Staff members involve
the participants in all kinds of com-
munity recreational activities. We
have lots of fun together and weve
developed really strong bonds with
countless people of all ages.
When families need a break from the
ongoing demands of providing care
for a family member, the Respite
Homes offer a valuable option with-
in Wesways menu of flexible ser-
vices. The Weekend Service wel-
comes participants to stay from
Friday through Sunday. This length
of respite is just right for some fami-
ly caregivers to feel re-energized.
They might take a short vacation, do
household chores, or perhaps just
catch up on much needed sleep.
John observes, Caregivers can feel
confident that their family members
will be well supported and cared for
at our Respite Homes. Plus, the par-
ticipants usually have a great time.
After all its a break for them too!
Respite Home Supervisors John Schmidt and
Jean Lesyk know that participants will love
the new Respite Homes
Home Away from Home
Proud to offer programs and
services that meet the physical,
developmental, communication
and social needs of children
of all ages and abilities.

Gift Idea
Are you struggling to find unique gift ideas? Why not give your special someone a dona-
tion to Wesway in his or her name? Your one-of-a kind gift will certainly make a differ-
ence. The recipient will appreciate knowing your gift has directly benefited families in our
community. A win-win situation for all involved!
Andrew and Tammy Decorte, Caregivers
Respite gives us a little relief to get things accomplished that we couldnt otherwise do.
Our worker is very good with our children and we have a great relationship with her.
Kelsey Horne, Community Friend
The woman Im matched with is high energy and full of life. She brings me a new perspec-
tive that I might not have noticed otherwise.
Richard Lupien, Caregiver
The support has been awesome. It is great to have. I like the fact that I can find people
my dad is already comfortable and familiar with to spend time with him and provide me
with a short break. I was able to use it when my dad was in hospital in Thunder Bay
and I was unable to be with him. I used it recently when I had to attend to my own med-
ical needs in Kenora and someone stayed with dad over night and for a day. I really
appreciate it and plan on using it a bit more.
Fred Klug, Caregiver
My wife has Alzheimer Disease, and we used the funding from Wesway to hire a worker to spend time with her.
Not only is it a good thing for me, it is a good thing for Judy my wife because she gets to do things I dont have
time for. I love the flexibility of the program because we are the ones who decide the hours and days we want

When my husband had his stroke, it was such a breaking point for my family. Respite might seem small, but
its really huge for us. Wesway is very positive and the process is so easy. What a treat!

If you love camping, fishing and
outdoor adventure, Kenora is a fab-
ulous place to live! And if your
nest has emptied, perhaps a wee
sense of freedom is stirring inside
freedom to spend a little more time
enjoying your favourite leisure pur-
suits. Thats how it was for
Rosemary and Addie Bain.
When their son and two daughters
were growing up, the Bains were
ardent campers, frequently spending
their summer weekends at the lake.
Smiling at the great memories,
Rosemary recalls, We always had
places to go and fun things to do!
When Addie retired, they made
plans for a carefree future. When
our son moved to Victoria, we said,
Thats OK, we can travel to B.C. for
visits and I thought, now its
time for me Im going to get a job
and earn a little money for myself,
shares Rosemary. But that didnt
happen.
Rosemary shares, My Dad came
and asked if he and Mom could
move in with us. Mom had demen-
tia and heart problems, and it was
hard for them to manage on their
own. Of course we didnt hesitate
and we welcomed their little dog
too. Moms health declined quick-
ly and she passed away within a
few years. By then Dad was blind
and had his own health issues, so
he continued to live with us. Now
hes 89 and really cant be left on
his own.
Dad is a wonderful manhe
always had a very dynamic
lifestyle, and was an extremely avid
reader. Its hard for him to lose his
independence. And really, its not
difficult to have Dad live with us
but, it is difficult to have the feeling
that we cant go anywhere without
Dad. His whole world revolves
around me, and thats a lot of pres-
sure! Sometimes were invited out
and we just cant go.
Now Rosemary and Addie are
encountering their own health
issues. Rosemary has arthritis and
suffers with pain in her knees. She
says, There are things I just cant
do. Last winter, Addie needed to
travel to Dryden for hip replacement
surgery. Rosemary desperately
wanted to be with her husband dur-
ing this time, but she couldnt leave
her Dad. Then she learned about
Wesways respite services from a
friend on Facebook. With help from
Wesway, Rosemary arranged for a
worker to stay with her Dad for a
few days, and she accompanied
Addie for his surgery.
Now Rosemary uses Wesways ser-
vices on a regular basis. Her Dad
cheerfully anticipates his outings
with the worker, so everybody
wins! The Bains love spending time
with their grandchildren, and they
are looking forward to a camping
trip with the whole family.
However, nothing is spontaneous
and Rosemary admits its still com-
plicated to plan and organize every-
thing to ensure her Dad is not
alone.
We want Dad to live at home with
us for as long as possible, says
Rosemary. Thanks to Wesway, I
feel we have a life again!

A Snapshot of Respite around the Region
From April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 Wesway assisted 304
families in Thunder Bay, providing 134,965 hours of respite care
through its In-Home, Respite Home, Host Family and Community
Friend services.
City of Thunder Bay and Immediate Surrounding Area:
Since 1973 Wesway has offered personalized Respite support
services to family caregivers who have a loved one living with
them that have a physical or developmental disability, Alzheimer
Disease, related dementia or a chronic health condition. While the
specific eligibility requirements may differ, Wesway provides its
services to caregivers with participants of all ages. Wesway offers
a variety of respite options for families including In Home and
Respite Home, Host Family and Community Friend services, as well
as Family Directed Respite Funding under limited circumstances.
Communities East of Thunder Bay:
In 2008, Wesway introduced a creative approach for serving
children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the district. Though a
small and focused initiative, it helped pave the way for the service
we offer to children and adults with a developmental disability.
As part of Ontario's Aging At Home Strategy, Wesway launched
respite care services for family caregivers of frail seniors in the
District of Thunder Bay. Recognizing the lack of this type of
support in the outlying communities, Wesway sought to undertake
an innovative pilot project to test the Family Directed Respite
Funding concept with seniors needing support. The overall
objective is to strengthen the capacity of family caregivers to care
for seniors at home.
Communities West of Thunder Bay:
In 2010, expanding on the success of its project in the east under
the Aging at Home Strategy, Wesway began offering its Family
Directed Respite Funding model in the districts of Kenora and Rainy
River, along the 11/17 corridor west of Thunder Bay. This
service has helped many families caring for loved ones with
chronic health conditions, frail elderly or Alzheimer Disease and
related dementia.
Since 2008, Wesway has served 296 families from the Manitoba
border, east to Manitouwadge, with Family Directed Respite
Funding.

From Natali Surkic...
Im a Lakehead University student
in the Applied Biomolecular
Science program, which incorpo-
rates a variety of different science
and math based courses. I chose
this degree to achieve a well
rounded understanding of science
in all of its complexity and rich-
ness. I felt it would provide the
strongest foundation from which to
become a physician.
Before I became involved with
Wesway, my eyes were closed to
the challenges faced by people
with special health conditions.
Volunteering as a Community
Friend has given me a new per-
spective on helping people. Not
only is this an eye opening volun-
teer experience, its really fun! Im
going to various places around
Thunder Bay I normally wouldnt
see, and gaining a lot of experience
that will help me when I graduate.
Getting involved with Wesway is
one of the best things Ive ever done.
Im matched with Alex, and weve
built a great relationship. I see her
as often as I can because we have
such a good time hanging out
together. We go to the park or
Rons Virtual World, get some ice
cream from Merla Mae, walk
around the Cascades or sometimes
just watch a movie or play Mouse
Trap. When I first started volun-
teering with Alex, I thought Id be
the one getting her out and show-
ing her some fun things to do in
Thunder Bay. I soon learned I was-
n't the only helpful one! Alex is so
optimistic and enjoys every minute
of every activity. She even has fun
singing out loud to music during
our car rides. She teaches me a
new way of looking at the world.
She shows me how to enjoy even
the littlest things in life and see the
fun in every situation. Alex has
given me more than I could have
given her. We've gone from com-
munity friends to true friends. I
can't imagine not having her as
part of my life!
From the Johnstone Family...

We would like to take this opportu-
nity to thank all the dedicated
Wesway staff and volunteers we
have had the pleasure to meet and
work with over the years. You
have given our daughter Alex the
most precious gifts of all, your
time, patience, knowledge, accep-
tance and love. The effects of these
gifts are apparent in Alex each and
every day; she has become more
self confident and independent and
has a true sense of belonging. She
looks forward to your visits each
and every week. No aspect of the
time any of you have spent with
her has gone unnoticed or unap-
preciated. For weeks, months even
years after a visit has taken place,
Alex will recall a special moment
or time that she has spent with
you. You are truly an extraordinary
group of people. We would like to
express our extreme gratitude and
appreciation for all Wesway has
provided. Thank you!

Brie was only 13 years old when
Katrena began working with her in
2007. They instantly hit it off. A
vibrant young woman with Down
Syndrome, Brie is full of life. She
enjoys shopping, cooking, dancing
and going to movies and she
absolutely loves music! Respite
Worker Katrena is enthusiastic
about the exact same interests. Its
the perfect match!
Brie comes from a large busy fami-
ly, including four younger siblings
a brother and three sisters. As a
result, the time spent with Katrena
is very special for Brie. They do all
kinds of girl things like paint their
nails, fix their hair, and pamper
themselves to the full extent. Mostly
they just have quality time together.
Sometimes, Bries sisters are includ-
ed in these adventures for an all
girls night out, and Bries Mom
can enjoy a true break.
In May 2010, a very close friend of
Bries passed away. Katrena was a
huge support to Brie during this sad
and difficult time. Together they cre-
ated a memory book as a special
tribute to her friend. It contains var-
ious mementos, including pictures
of the two girls having fun together,
places they used to go, even a
photo of her friends favourite musi-
cian. They also made a CD of her
friends favourite songs. Brie adores
the memory book as a cherished
keepsake. It helps keep her friends
memory alive and gives her comfort
in times of sadness. Katrena and
Brie often talk about her friend.
Katrena has consistently gone
above and beyond to support Brie
through the tough times.
This year Brie turns eighteen.
Unfortunately, this birthday mile-
stone can be a real challenge for
many families served by Wesway.
At age eighteen, children officially
transition to adulthood and they are
no longer eligible for childrens
respite services. Sadly, there is a
severe shortage of government
funding for adults with a disability.
Wesways respite services for adults
simply cannot keep pace with the
ever-increasing demand. The result
is a very lengthy waiting list for
these young people.
For Brie and her family this could
have been a devastating blow.
However, Katrena is determined not
to give up the strong bond of friend-
ship that she has developed with
Brie and her family over the last
several years. Katrena has decided
to become a Community Friend and
continue her relationship with Brie
on a volunteer basis. What a won-
derful demonstration of commitment
to families!
In Bries words, We are BFF, right

Molly Dasch, Community Friend
I appreciated respite when my husband had a stroke. Now, volunteering gives me oppor-
tunity to help someone else. Im matched with a lady close in age and we share common
interests, hobbies, employment backgrounds, and similar family situations. We had lots
to talk about right from the beginning and our friendship has grown.
When Connie Dykstra gave birth to
Laura, she was by all accounts a
healthy baby girl. She did all the
things babies do; eating, playing,
laughing, crawling and walking.
Everything changed at 19 months
of age, when Laura began suffering
brief but substantial seizures. At the
outset, doctors couldnt find the
cause but Connie knew in her heart
that it was something serious. Due
to the seizures, which often struck
her several times a day, Laura
began to regress to where she
stopped walking, and was eventually
unable to support her own weight.
She shows no emotion or expres-
sion of pain, making it difficult to
know if something is wrong. While
doctors suspect that whatever has
caused the seizures have also
caused her developmental disability,
medical professionals have been
unable to diagnose what Laura is
going through. One doctor said
that the more they study the brain,
the more they realize how little they
know, Connie says.
Making Lauras condition more dif-
ficult is a lung condition which has
caused many hospital stays. Laura
gets sick so easily and is physically
fragile. We are in and out of there
all the time, Connie remarks.
In 2001, tragedy struck Connies
family when her husband John was
killed in an accident shortly after
Lauras health condition emerged.
Through Connie's faith, her family
and her new husband Derrick
whom she married in 2003, she
was able to cope with the challenge
of raising a family that includes a
daughter with special needs. In
2007 when one of her sons passed
away suddenly, it was again those
same pillars that provided the sup-
port Connie needed to get through
the most difficult times.
My faith and my family helped us
out so much. Derrick and I are
teaching our children these same
values growing up. Our kids help us
with many of Lauras needs. They
are very involved.
The challenge now facing Connie is
that Laura has turned twelve years
old, and it is getting more difficult
to get her dressed and ready to go
out. Laura had surgery for aspira-
tion issues last July, and as her lung
condition has improved, she has put
on more weight as a side effect of
that. The challenge is that it now
takes more effort to lift and carry
her, Lauras room was redesigned
with a lift and tracking system as
well as a large tub, making life a lit-
tle easier for the family. It was
very costly but worth it. Laura still
has high needs and is medically
fragile, prone to illness and bone
fractures. We almost lost her last
year, she adds.
Like many caregivers, Connie ini-
tially didnt think she would need
respite. If I could go back and do it
again, I would have called Wesway
earlier. Respite has been really good
for all of us. It has allowed us to
take a couple of short trips and do
some things as a family we other-
wise couldnt
do, Connie adds.
She appreciates
how Wesway
matched her with
Respite Workers
who blend into
her home. Our
worker is family
oriented like us
and has similar
values. Shes like
a part of the fam-
ily, and fits in
well.
Laura also visits
the Respite
Home, which
allows her family
to take short
vacations or to
rest up at home.
Connie is looking
forward to taking her to Wesways
new Respite Home.
As for the future, Connie is hopeful
Laura can be matched with a
Wesway Host Family to help her
with periods of respite.
Connie says her family and faith give her the strength
she needs

Make a difference in a childs life,
become a Foster Parent.
Laura arrived at the familys home
for the initial meeting and immedi-
ately put them at ease. She shared
easily of herself and asked respect-
ful questions, engaging both the
family caregiver and the partici-
pant in conversation. She gra-
ciously accepted their invitation to
stay for tea afterwards and it was
easy to see that Laura Heerema
was going to be a Respite Worker
who would make a difference. If
you already know Laura, that
wouldnt surprise you. This is a
woman who has been making a
difference in our community for
years.
After completing high school Laura
went on to take the Early
Childhood Education Course at
Confederation College. She enjoyed
her work supporting families and
encouraged the people she worked
with to be the best they could be
so they could experience the full-
ness of life.
When Laura and her husband
Mark became first time parents to
Nikki, Laura found herself follow-
ing Nikki everywhere with her
camera. She received many com-
pliments on her photography. By
the time their son Nathan was
born, Laura had decided, Now
this is a way to give back to oth-
ers. Her photos allowed her to gift
others with shared memories and
opportunities to appreciate nature.
This talented woman now gets
requests to photograph families,
weddings and babies!
As her children got older, Laura
began volunteering at their school
pitching in with whatever help was
needed. Today Laura helps out
with the Booster Club and the hot
lunch program. Laura is active in
her church community where she
sings in the Joyful Chorus choir and
she teaches Sunday School. She
coordinates volunteers to care for a
child with special needs at the
church while their parents attend
the worship service. Laura has also
had a role in the Vacation Bible
School for the past 21 years.
Last summer Laura decided to
apply for a Respite Worker position
at Wesway. She felt she was treated
as somebody right from the
beginning of the process. She felt
genuinely accepted for the person
she was and the experiences she
held. They really want to get to
know you, they ask how you feel,
says Laura. The supervisors have
been very supportive and when
you are treated well as an employ-
ee, you want to give back. Youre
made to feel worthy as an employ-
ee. Ive never felt as happy as I am
here.
Laura expressed her appreciation
for the training period. Ive never
felt so valued, she said. I could
see Wesway really cared about me
as an employee. I thought the
training was good and much need-
ed. It allowed us to hash out our
thoughts and understand all their
policies. I felt confident going
through the training and it was my
life skills that gave me that confi-
dence.
Today Laura is matched with four
families. She has four regular shifts
each week, as well as some occa-
sional work. The flexibility is
amazing, says Laura. I still want
to be home at the end of the day
for my kids and the positions Ive
accepted allow for this to happen.
It is so cool that Wesway matches
me with people that I fit so well
with. I feel honoured that these
families would have me as their
Respite Worker.

Erik Sereda, Respite Worker
In my two years as a Respite Worker with Wesway, I have had the pleasure of meeting some amazing individu-
als and families. Just seeing the happiness and strength of these individuals and families is enough to turn the
worst day into a great day.
Emily Currie, Respite Worker
Its rare and special to go to work and be greeted everyday with smiles, laughter, and even hugs. Its one of the
many things that I love about working for Wesway. The children that I work with are always excited to see me,
and spending time with the participants rarely feels like work. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad
day while working for Wesway.

Life in general is filled with chal-
lenges, and when we have children
the demands on parents become
greater. This is compounded when it
is a single parent, and that single
parent has a child with autism. Its
like trying to swim up stream.
When Crystal Anderson was preg-
nant at nineteen years old, she and
her high school sweetheart were
thrilled with the reality of becoming
parents and raising a family. They
were not prepared however, for the
special bundle they received. Their
son Caden is a beautiful boy, who
at four years old is challenged with
autism a challenge that Cadens
father could not accept. This left
Crystal and Caden to swim on
their own.
To say the least, when it was ini-
tially suggested to her that her son
had autism, Crystals reaction was
denial. As she says with a very
heavy heart, No one wants to be
told that theres something wrong
with their child. Once Caden was
diagnosed, I felt uplifted because
people understood and assistance
began. Plus, I learned about a diag-
nosis that I knew nothing about.
Autism is just a word. It doesnt
have to hold Caden back as a result
of a label. As a young girl in an
Aboriginal community, I experi-
enced discrimination because I
didnt look like them, so I want to
protect my son.
Crystal constantly struggled with
the feeling that she was inconve-
niencing her family and friends to
care for Caden while she tried to
run errands. The lack of time to
herself, plus worrying about how
she would manage on her own,
affected Crystals health. She suf-
fered from depression, felt very
insecure and developed an intestinal
illness that required her to change
her diet. The upstream swim was
becoming unmanageable at this
point.
When Crystal started with Wesway
Family Directed Respite Funding,
she said, It has given me my life
back. She is now able to breathe
and find time for herself, including
attending school part time. Wesway
funding assists with some of the
care costs.
When asked about Crystals plans
for the future, she responded, Im
not really secure right now. So, I
would like to own a home and a
vehicle. Im not concerned about
many material things because they
arent important to Caden, but I
would like to have more children.
Caden is kind and gentle with other
children and babies, and I know
that he would be a very good big
brother.
I used to tear-up every time I had
to talk about Caden. Now that I
understand autism a bit better and I
know how to help him, I see his
contentment, which makes me feel
content. Caden is a treasure and I
look forward to my life with him.
Somehow, the swim upstream
doesnt seem so daunting right
now.

Dear Friend of Wesway,
Piper is our charming and adorable ten year old son. He enjoys camping, swimming, fishing and all kinds of music and movies. At
home, he idolizes his big sister and little brother, giving them big hugs and keeping them close by. At school, he delights in making
his friends laugh and has been known to bring out the best in his peers.
Piper was born with Down Syndrome and a heart defect. For his safety, its imperative that we keep a very close eye on him.
Darting into the street or wandering away is a scary possibility. At times, he fixates on wanting to do an activity or go to a certain
place and its hard to redirect his attention. Shopping trips with Piper are very limited and can be difficult because its hard to sustain
his attention for long periods of time.
Were fortunate to have lots of family support, but our parents arent getting younger and they need a break too. We were referred
to Wesway and went on a waiting list for a while. Incredibly, the first time we used Wesways respite service was the day our third
child was born!
Our Wesway Respite Worker has taken Piper once a week for five years. Shes absolutely wonderful! Although Piper has limited
verbal skills, we know he loves Tiffany. Together they play with her dog, go to parks or the library, watch movies, play on the com-
puter or go out to eat. Its a social time for him. He gets fresh air and exercise while learning to interact with people without us
watching and directing every move.
For us, respite is a rare grown-up evening together at a restaurant! We also appreciate some uninterrupted time with our other
two children. When Piper spends a weekend at Wesways Respite Home, both of us can attend our daughters hockey tournaments
and really focus on her games.
There are times when weve been completely exhausted. Piper only recently began to sleep through the night! Were young and
healthy, but we know there are many families struggling to cope in their role as caregivers.
Looking ahead, we realize our support network will change over time. Our other children will grow more independent and involved
with their own lives. Where will that leave Piper? We hope Wesway will continue to be there for us.
In the future, we see ourselves volunteering for Wesway. For now, its more realistic for us to give back by making regular financial
donations. We hope you will do the same. Please give what you can, and help us support Wesways vital services for families!
Sincerely,
Leslie and Chris Hynnes
