About FNF
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) is Germanys liberal foundation. At home and in 60 countries around the globe, FNF and its partners promote freedom, liberalism, democracy, human rights, pluralism, tolerance, market-based economies and rule of law. FNF has close ties to Germanys liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP). We were founded in 1958 by Germanys first President Theodor Heuss and have been working in Asia since 1979. FNF is publicly funded. Our head office is in Potsdam, Germany. FNF briefs decision makers in Berlin and publishes reports. We facilitate dialogue, organize conferences and invite young people from Asia and other regions to attend seminars in Germany.

Liberalism - Democracy
Liberalism emphasizes the freedom of the individual. Individual freedom, responsibilities, rights and duties are the prerequisites for a free and open society. Some governments say a collective approach is needed to maintain social coherence. In fact, this is an excuse to curb freedom and to maintain power. Liberals believe that individual freedom benefits society. We see four pillars of society: political freedom, human rights, economic freedom and the rule of law. Democracy is the rule of the people, our rule. Free and fair elections, freedom of expression and the protection of human rights are essential. Respected, democratic parties are pillars of liberal democracy. In Southeast and East Asia, FNF works with more than a dozen liberal parties, many NGOs and some media-organisations. We support networking.

Human Rights - Freedom - Rule of Law

Human rights, civil liberties and the rule of law must be upheld. FNF promotes respect for human rights. We support the Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, a regional coalition of NGOs, parliamentary human rights committees and individual activists. FNF also supports national Working Groups on Human Rights, such as the one in Phnom Penh which aims to establish an Independent National Human Rights Commission in Cambodia. Our civil society partners in Southeast and East Asia - a few are mentioned here - share FNFs liberal vision. Some of our NGO-Partners work on human rights issues, others promote democracy, freedom of expression or the rights of women in Islam.

Economic Freedom - Market Economy

Economic freedom - the freedom to enter and compete in markets and the protection of property rights - is the best recipe for fighting poverty and gaining prosperity. Globalization poses more opportunities than challenges. Market-based economies propel growth. In 1998, FNF initiated the Economic Freedom Network Asia (EFN), a network of research institutes, practitioners, think-tanks and individuals. EFN provides a platform for academic exchange and encourages debate on the merits of economic freedom. We believe in competition and the limitation of state intervention in market processes. EFN values voluntary exchange, free market access and the rule of law. The network has 30 members. In cooperation with the Fraser Institute we present the Economic Freedom of the World Report at an annual conference in Asia. The report proves the correlation between economic freedom and human development.

Freedom Barometer Asia

FNFs Freedom Barometer Asia compares and ranks political freedom, rule of law and economic freedom in 16 countries in Southeast and East Asia. We look at the extent to which elections are free and fair and the independence of the court system. The protection of human rights, property rights, the absence of corruption, press freedom and several other factors contribute to our ranking. fnfasia.org

Liberal International Congress

FNF co-organised the 57th Congress of the Liberal International - the world federation of liberal and progressive democratic political parties. In June 2011 more than 250 delegates debated issues related to the central theme "Human Rights and Trade" in Manila, Philippines. It was Asias biggest gathering of liberal parties to date. liberal-international.org
