News Bulletin from the General Curia of the Congregation of the Mission From the Editor
With the strength that Gods Spirit gives us, which we just celebrated at Pentecost, and the daily presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, we place into your hands once again the news bulletin, Nuntia, its June issue. In it are presented the most relevant activities of the Superior General and the General Council, as well as the memory of two notable persons for the Vincentian Family: Nicholas Van Kleef and the newly Blessed Sister Marguerite Rutan. May the strength and the grace of the Spirit continue guiding the Congregation and the entire Vincentian Family in order that we may continue being witnesses of his love in the world.

Memory of the Assassination of our Confrere, Nicholas Van Kleef (Nico)
On the morning of 7 May 1989, the day on which the presidential election was held in Panama, a few meters from Saint Marthas Church in the Bugaba district, an agent of the Defense Forces pulled the trigger fatally injuring Van Kleef, who, because of a traffic accident suffered in Veraguas, was in wheelchair. In spite of that, he had actively continued his missionary labor. Father Nico was accustomed to traverse the village using a loudspeaker to inform the people that Mass was about to begin, but in spite of having requested permission from the heads of the former Defense Forces in La Concepcin for this, a confused policeman thinking that he was calling the people to sabotage the elections, and at the same time not wanting the priest to do his work, approached the car in which he was travelling and putting the weapon to his head did not hesitate to commit one of the most despicable crimes against a man whose emphasis in life was on loving God and struggling for peace. Every year, the confreres and other associations of the Vincentian Family, as well as parishioners of the parishes neighboring that of Saint Martha, meet to celebrate the faithful witness of Father Nico (as he was affectionately called).

Chronicle of a Beatification
In Matthews gospel, Jesus makes it clear that the pursuit of the Kingdom has its risks, but also a big reward, a life of constant happiness. That is what happened to Marguerite Rutan. Her consistent witness to Jesus Christ and his cause led her to give her life, receiving the palm of martyrdom, but with it also full life in God. Because of that, today we call her Blessed. Marguerite Rutan, Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, was martyred on 9 April 1794 in Dax, France. Sister Rutans beatification took place in Dax, France and different activities were carried out around this celebration, which had so much meaning for the Vincentian Family. The majority of those who came from other places gathered on Friday. On that day there was a pilgrimage to the places where Marguerite was before her martyrdom, concluding with a play on Rutans life and a well entertained dinner at the Berceau.

In the evening there was Thanksgiving Vigil in the Cathedral of Dax, where the Bishop of Dax, Cardinal Amato, different members of the Vincentian Family, and local parishioners were present.

On Sunday, the 19th, there was a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Buglose. In the afternoon, it was the great celebration of Sister Marguerites Beatification in Daxs Arena. The Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato, presided at the celebration. About six thousand people gathered.

On Monday, the 20th, in the morning, the first Eucharist for the newly Blessed was held. It was presided by the Bishop of Dax, Monsignor Philippe Breton.

The painting of Sister Marguerite for the beatification was done by Gianluigi Marzo, a young priest of Saint Sophias Parish in Corsano, Province of Lecce (Italy). We thank Father Gianluigi for his great artistic contribution to this celebration. May the force of the Spirit continue strengthening him in his ministry and increase his gifts.

Highlighting some historical information about Sister Rutans martyrdom. (Source: Father Marlio, C.M.)
An archival document announced that, in December 1793, a delegation of the Company of Daxs popular commune presented a claim before the monitoring committee against the superior of Daxs hospital, giving several accusations in opposition to the renewed law. Immediately after the complaint, the committee considered that the accused merited prison, the arrest warrant was established, in such a way that at the end of the year, it would be communicated to the representatives of the people, the department, the district board, the municipality, and the popular commune.

P. Gianluigi Marzo Sister Marguerite was put in jail on 24 December 1793, together with 54 other women in the Carmelite convent, which had been transformed into a womens jail, whereas the men were detained in the former Capuchin monastery.

On 3 March 1794, 11 other Daughters of Charity from the hospital also were imprisoned because they were indicated as aristocrats, fanatics, and superstitious persons. When Sister Marguerite was in jail, she was accused by a soldier who presented against her other charges in violation of the law. She was submitted to a first interrogation on 15 January 1794.

On 28 March 1794, a search of her cell was ordered and carried out, where they found pamphlets and articles, which, in the opinion of the revolutionaries, were proof of her antirepublican and uncivil spirit, and her participation against the revolution.

Sister Rutan was kept in total isolation in the jail and was submitted to a type of judicial interrogation, at which she was not allowed to defend herself from the accusations. At the end of the interrogation the judges issued the sentence, which was carried out the same day. It was 9 April 1794.

Sister Marguerite was chained with her hands behind her back together with a priest. They went as one in a wagon passing through the city streets as far as the square where the guillotine had been set up. There were many witnesses to these deaths. The priest was executed first and then the sister.

She was buried in one of the ditches, which were excavated from one day to the next, in an area adjacent to the former Capuchin convent due to the great number of those condemned to the guillotine

May the example of men and women like Sister Marguerite continue to inspire the Vincentian Family today for a greater commitment with Jesus Christ in the poor.
