Do You Know?
Singapore Post is happy to announce that it has appointed local Asiatainment artiste, Mr Edmund Chen Zhi Cai as its stamp ambassador. Edmund, who is also the stamp designer for the new stamp issue, The Endangered Animal - Oriental Small-Clawed Otter, will help SingPost in its efforts to generate and inculcate an interest in stamp-collecting among the young. Edmund is recognised as an artiste with mass appeal. Apart from being well-known as a family man, Edmund is friendly, stylish and has a flair for the arts. He is an ideal ambassador to convey the message that stamps are not just collectibles, but also a wholesome hobby that can foster family ties as it brings family members, especially young families, together in a quest to learn more about a countrys history, nature, art, culture and science. Edmund is excited about the collaboration. He said, It is an exciting opportunity to work with SingPost. Stamps are invaluable windows to a countrys heritage, commemorating important events in a countrys or regions history. As a stamp designer, I can do my part as a citizen in helping to preserve our heritage. I hope that through my ambassadorship, I can make a difference by bringing a new dimension to the peoples perspective of stamps.

The designs in this bulletin were reproduced from rough visuals. Details may be subject to change.
[ Co. Reg. No. 199201623M ]

Mr Woo Keng Leong, Executive Vice President (Mail) of SingPost said, Stamp collecting can be a fun, rewarding and inexpensive hobby. We are always looking for interesting ways to inculcate the interest in stamp collecting in the young generation. We feel that having Edmund as the stamp ambassador will help generate excitement in stampcollecting. To begin with, I am sure many would love to own a set of stamps personally drawn by a local celebrity whom they are familiar with!

SINGAPORE POSTS STAMP AMBASSADOR:

Edmunds Story

(Edmund Chen Zhi Cai is the designer for the Endangered Animal - Oriental Small-Clawed Otter stamp series)

When I was a boy, both my parents had to work and I was sent to live with my maternal granny. Back then, we did not have the modern conveniences and luxuries we take for granted now, and when the grown-ups had to work, the little ones had to entertain themselves. In order to satisfy a small boy's curiosity, I was given a simple box of colour pencils. That was my first encounter with arts, which in turn connected me to the wonderful world of colours and imagination. I started to draw anything I saw. But the one occasion that was truly a turning point was that one time in Primary 5. I visited a classmate of mine and was fascinated by his beautiful aquarium. For a boy of my age, the aquarium was like a glittering vast ocean, full of promise and adventure! Mesmerised by it, I went home and urged my parents to buy me an aquarium, to no avail. Aquariums, they said, cost money to maintain, and we did not have that sort of money to spare. Undaunted, I decided to have my own aquarium on paper! Every day after school for two whole weeks, I would visit my friend's home faithfully. Staring at the fishes and memorising each and every single detail daily, I would then run home and transfer everything I remembered onto paper. Finally, I had it I had an aquarium of my own. These wondrous, fascinating marine creatures were right here in my living room! I particularly love to draw animals. They start out with little more than a pencil outline but I would spend immense amount of time detailing them with colour, texture and would pay attention to the special characteristics and traits of the specimen. I wanted to capture the animals temperament on paper. I leant from being a father later on that this was the best way to allow my children to connect with animals as they got to see how much time and love I dedicate to the creation of each animal.

One occasion, I showed my friend my series of ten endangered animals. Impressed, she decided to introduce me to a friend who works at Singapore Post and the rest is history. The process of doing my first stamp series was nerve wrecking. I researched copiously on the web and made frequent visits to the library. As a self-taught artist. I was never formally trained in Art but experimented with various art-forms and techniques. My philosophy is always get as close to the animal as possible and to literally get my drawing as close to the real deal itself. My children, Yixi (20 years-old) and Yixin (11 years-old) became my research assistants and even joined in the adventure! They rolled out their little artist gear and drew alongside me! As I created The Otter, they too drew their own versions of the otter! The journey soon became so enjoyable and it became a way for our family to bond. The Otter and art has truly brought us all closer together. We later learned that Singapore Post has decided to use the childrens versions of the Otter in the presentation pack as well! I now possess a deeper understanding of the Otters natural habitats and in the process, gain a deeper appreciation for Mother Earth. I also got an education on philately and learnt how to really appreciate a stamp, which really is a miniature window to a vast repository of knowledge. Looking back at my adventures with the Otter, I am overwhelmed by a feeling of great joy and gratitude. This has truly been an amazing journey and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my comrades, advisors and experts on board, Singapore Post especially Clement, Karen, Gary and Peggy, and of course, my family. Indeed, the family that plays together truly stays together.

Spices of Singapore
Do you know spices were as valuable as gold in the 19th century? In this special stamp issue, we introduce you to three spices found in the Spice Garden: Tamarind, Cinnamon and Turmeric, as well as two other spices commonly used in local cuisines Coriander and Star Anise. Tamarind comes from the elongated velvety pod of the Tamarind tree ( ). The sweet and sour juice extracted from the pulp is widely used to prepare local delights, such as the traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish commonly known as rojak. The aromatic Cinnamon is obtained from the inner bark of the Cinnamon tree ( ), a small evergreen tree that can grow to about 10m tall. Principally used as a condiment in beverages, as well as in desserts, it also has medicinal value as it contains high antioxidant properties. Most often used in powder form, Turmeric is derived from the rhizome (horizontal rootstem) of the Turmeric ( ) plant. The rhizome is harvested and ground to a fine deep orange-yellow powder, which is a key ingredient in curries and many other cuisines. All parts of the Coriander ( plant are edible, but the fresh leaves, roots and the dried seeds are the parts most commonly used in cooking, often used in marinating meat for Satay. Star Anise is a spice that closely resembles anise in flavour. It is obtained from the starshaped dried fruit of the tree ( ), which is native to southwest China. Like anise, star anise gets its distinctive, intense flavour from a chemical compound called anethol. )

EDB 50th Anniversary

01 August 2011

The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) was established in 1961 to spearhead Singapores industrialisation drive. 50 years have passed since Singapore took its first steps in economic development and investment promotion. From making mosquito coils and hair wigs in the 1960s, to the high-tech manufacturing and innovation driven activities of today, the Singapore economy has been on a steady path of progress, capability building and transformation. This has been made possible by the combined efforts of the government, workers and companies who had the confidence to invest in Singapore.

EDBs approach to creating strong partnerships, its pioneering spirit to take bold steps into uncharted waters, as well as its can-do approach have underpinned the development of new industries, created exciting jobs and built a diversified, globally competitive economy. The release of EDBs 50th Anniversary commemorative stamp collection celebrates how far Singapore has come from its modest beginnings. It also heralds an exciting tomorrow where Singapore becomes the home in Asia for global business, innovation and talent and remains, as always, future-ready.

Areas of Historical Significance in Singapore

08 August 2011

As our country continuously evolved in developments technologically, economically as well as structurally in landscapes, let us not forget that amidst all these efforts came a history behind it and the areas that settled the people behind the successes of our country. Taman Jurong is one of the oldest residential precincts in Singapore. It was mainly coastal swamplands fed by many small rivers meandering through the mangroves in the early days, to the currently developed suburban residential area, with more plans to further transform the area into a business and leisure destination hub serving the west of Singapore. Joo Chiat is also a residential conservation area and known as the Confederate Estate Road in its earlier days. In 1993, it was gazetted as a conservation district, resulting in the preservation of many shophouses

and bungalows that reflected the typical architectural styles of the turn of the twentieth century. Let us take a walk down the lanes of past and present, and reminisce about the earlier days of the current areas.
