General

Integrator IR201 with rogowski coil can be used for non-contact measuring of alternating sinusoidal and pulsed currents. The Rogowski coil is an air-cored toroidal winding placed round the conductor such that the alternating magnetic field produced by the current induces a voltage in the coil. The coil loop does not need to be circular nor does the current need to be centrally situated. The coil is effectively a mutual inductor coupled to the conductor being measured and the voltage output direct from the coil is proportional to the rate of change of current. The coil is connected to an integrator, which may be passive or active. The output from the integrator is a voltage waveform that reproduces the current waveform, or corresponding current waveform. If a coil is evenly wound with N turns/m on a non-magnetic former of constant cross sectional area A m2 then provided the coil constitutes a closed loop with no discontinuities it may be shown that the induced voltage E is proportional to the rate of change of the encircled current I, i.e. dI , where H 4 10 7 NA (Vs/A) E H dt

Picture 2: Principle of Rogowski transducer

If the integrator has a time constant Ti than the overall transducer gain is given by:

Vout R sh I , where R sh

H Ti

is the

transducer sensitivity (V/A) A consequence of equation is that Rogowski transducers cannot continuously reproduce the mean or dc component of the measured current. There is a frequency below which the transducer gain decreases. Furthermore there is an upper limit of frequency above which gain decreases due to the inherent time delays in the coil and integrator.

IR201 Description

The IR201 series based single-channel current-measuring transducer is a complete measuring set in which a flexible Rogowski coil type 1012 Rocoil or type 4020, is attached to the integrator electronics unit IR201, suitable for permanent installation in a plastic wall-mounted enclosure having IP66 protection. These integrators have only one sensitivity, which is specified by the customer in order. The Rogowski coil used is placed round the cable or busbar conductor that should be monitored in such a way that the alternating magnetic field produced by the current induces a voltage in the coil proportional to the rate of change of current. Double insulated Rogowski coil has screened cable having 2 pole screened LEMO-type 0 high quality connector termination. Inserting the male side of connector into IR201 female side of connector on front plate of IR201, measuring voltage from coil is connected with integrator. Block diagram of the complete transducer is presented in pict. 3. The coil output voltage is integrated electronically to provide an output that reproduces the current waveform. By varying the integration parameters (C and R) of the integrator amplifier A1 the sensitivity of the complete measuring system, measured in Amperes per Volt, can be varied. The sensitivity is defined as the current, which gives a 1V output (amps/volt). Standard ranges for primary currents are 30A, 300A, 3kA, but other values are also possible: By default sensitivity is adjusted that 3000A RMS gives 3V peak to peak on auxiliary output 14-15, which is intended for testing purpose only and 10V RMS on output 18-17, but for current output by default overall IR201 transfer ratio is set to 3000A/10mA Integrator output is led to the isolation amplifier A2 that gives the output signal high insulating level towards integration circuit. Secondary signal is adjusted on differential amplifier and led to output stage consisting of operational amplifier A4 and transistors V5, V6. Output stage is able to give voltage output signal 10V, or current signal 10mA on connections 18-17.

Current signal is floating so it can be connected to ground level on remote side. This option is mainly for use with permanent installations with distanced monitoring devices that use output signal. IR201 is supplied from user side with 12V DC,. On demand IR201 can be equipped with additional supply unit having universal input 90-230VAC DC and 12V output, which can be used for supply of IR201 transducer also. Internal isolating DC/DC transducers Q1 and Q2 24/5V are used for supply of coil and integrator circuits and for supply of differential amplifier before output stage in order to have floating output signal. Output current signal 10mA is led to termination resistors of maximum 1kOhm, or voltage signal 10V is loaded with minimum 1kOhm on user side. Also, IR103, three channel Integrators can be supplied as wall-mounted enclosure having IP66 protection and 3 channels per module. Where appropriate we can supplement other features such as RMS output, overload indication, current-summing circuits and other different variants.

FLEXIBLE AC CURRENT ROGOVSKI PROBE WITH INTEGRATOR TYPE IR201

DE2582 Page: 3/4

The integrator electronic module Type IR201, can be combined with different rigid or flexible coils from different sub-suppliers, But as it is primarily intended for current conduction monitoring through thyristors in a three-phase thyristor bridge rectifier, regular set comprise flexible coil type 4020. Flexible coils are generally more convenient to use than rigid coils but are less accurate. (1% compared with 0.1% for a rigid coil). They are better than rigid coils for highfrequency measurements. Flexible coils come in lengths ranging from about 250mm to several metres. They can be manufactured either with or without an electrostatic screen. If the coil is long enough it can be wrapped several times round the conductor to increase the output. The output is proportional to the number of wraps. It is important to align the ends correctly otherwise accuracy will be impaired and the coil will become sensitive to interference from adjacent conductors or other sources of magnetic fields. The standard locating method is a simple push-together system. Push-together ends are good for coils that have to be fitted and removed quickly. The diameter of the free end is small and can be threaded through confined spaces. However, we can also provide more expensive coils with screw-together ends. Several other mounting arrangements are available to suit special situations Electrical connection to the coil is at one end only. The other end is 'free' and can be threaded round awkwardly shaped conductors or conductors in confined spaces. Flexible coils do not have to fit tightly round the conductor and their output is not excessively sensitive to position in relation to the conductor. They must, however, encircle the conductor completely. As default 4022 flexible coils, with 2 m output leads and 500mm long, are supplied. Having a small cross-section flexible coil Type 4020 has output diameter of about 5,5 mm and can be used in difficult to access areas and use the simpler overlapping endjoining method. This coil has the mutual inductance of about values in the range 0.1 0.15 micro Henries.

Flexible Rogowski coils are useful for measuring electric current in large or awkwardly shaped conductors, where space round the conductor is restricted or where a lightweight transducer is needed which can be suspended on the conductor.

Picture 4-Coil type 4020 These coils are with 2 layers of insulation comprising a coloured inner layer covered by a tough grey/black outer layer and have push-together ends. The coils are normally provided with a 2m long output lead (twisted pair with overall screen. The coil is fitted with a termination 2-pole LEMO connector for use with IR201 integrator electronics. In order to have better precision coils and integrators are usually supplied as matched pairs but for monitoring purpose an interchangeable system is being sufficient where any coil can be used with any integrator.
