So what type of reaction are you

anyway???

I. Introduction
We have conducted numerous experiments in lab. Many of these labs have
been straight forward and required little interpretation on your part. Today’s
lab will require you to observe several chemical reactions and determine
what type of reaction is taking place.

II. Objective:
• TLW determine the reaction type based on observations.
• TLW predict the products of a reaction given its reactants.

Caution:
We will be working with acidic/toxic chemicals in lab today. There is to be
not horse play or practical jokes. Safety goggles and a lab apron are to be
worn at all times.
NOTE: Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid; avoid exposure to skin. If some
does come in contact with your skin, wash the affected area with soap and
water. Short exposure will not harm you but avoid contact with the eyes.

Materials Needed:
10 mL pipette
Test tubes
Stirring rod
Tongs
Bunsen burner
Flint lighter
Potassium ferricynide and Nickel (II) Sulfate
Carbonated drink and Mentos
Hydrochloric acid
Magnesium strips
Procedure:
This lab is divided into multiple stations. The materials for each station have been set out
by your instructor.

Mentos and Carbonated drink

Use a sheet of paper to create a funnel that will channel as many Mentos as possible into
a 2 liter bottle of a carbonated beverage. Observe the chemical reaction. Record your
observation below.

Use your text book, the internet, or any other source to predict what chemical reaction
was at play in the reaction you observed. Write the chemical reaction below.

What type of reaction is this? Write your answer below.

Magnesium and hydrochloric acid

You will find a vial and a weighing boat with metal strips at this station. The vial
contains .1 M hydrochloric acid, respect it. Taking care not to spill, pipette 10 mL into a
test tube. Rinse the pipette. Next drop a strip of magnesium into the test tube. Use the
stirring rod to submerge the strip. Rinse the stirring rod. Observe the magnesium strip,
and record your observations. What happens when your instructor adds more
concentrated HCL?

Use your text book, the internet, or any other source to predict what chemical reaction
was at play in the reaction you observed. Write the chemical reaction below.

What type of reaction is this? Write your answer below.

Bunsen burner and Magnesium
You will observe two different chemical reactions at this station. First, light your Bunsen
burning. Record your observation below.

Use your text book, the internet, or any other source to predict what chemical reaction
was at play in the reaction you observed. Write the chemical reaction below.

Green liquid, red liquid
You will find two vials at this station, one with a green liquid (nickel (II) sulfate), the
other with a red liquid (potassium ferricynide). Pour the green liquid into one of the test
tubes (approximately half way). Next pour the red liquid into the same test tube; take
care not to spill. Observe the reaction, and record your observation below. Empty and
clean your test tube when you are finished. Clean any spills.

Questions to be addressed in the conclusion

1) Where your predictions accurate?
2) What observations aided most in your diagnosis of reaction type?
3) How were you able to determine the unknown reactant and the products of these
reactions without being given them by your instructor?
