Name: Chapter 5.2, The Roman Empire and Julius Caesar Class/Subject: World History Date: October 17, 2011

Student Objectives/Student Outcomes 1. Students will understand and define the vocabulary words of imperialism, province, latifundia, and census. 2. Students will actively participate in discussing examples of each vocabulary word in the context of the Roman Empire and in the context of today, in order to fully comprehend the meanings of the vocab. 3. Student will conclude and critic the aspects of Julius Caesars rise to power, his political reforms, and his assassination by reading the textbook excerpt, then discussing the text book excerpt in groups, and then summarize in their own words the story of Caesar. Content Standards:
16.B.3a (W) Compare the political characteristics of Greek and Roman civilizations with non-Western civilizations, including the early Han dynasty and Gupta empire, between 500 BCE and 500 CE. 16.A.3b Make inferences about historical events and eras using historical maps and other historical sources.

Materials/Resources/Technology: Computer/Projector Paper/Writing Utensil

Teachers Goals: To demonstrate ways in understanding vocabulary in both past historical contexts and modern historical contexts. To demonstrate ways in understanding history textbooks about historical events or people, and then aiding in the development of the ability to explain in ones own words, while critically analyzing the text.

Time: 8:00-8:05 : Teacher will project from the computer the PowerPoint presentation displaying the objectives of the lesson. 8:10: Teacher will ask the class to share what students first impressions are of the vocabulary. Encourage discussion by asking questions regarding the vocab. 8:13: While incorporating ideas the students came up with, the teacher will define each vocabulary word as the following: Imperialism: The books definition (p.133)- establishing control over foreign lands and peoples Yesterdays example: Roman conquest of the Mediterranean Province: The books definition (p.133) - lands under Roman rule. Yesterdays Example- the conquered lands of the Romans became provinces. Examples: Macedonia, Greece, and parts of Asia Latifundia: The books definition (p.133)- huge estates bought by newly wealthy Romans Yesterdays example- As a result of conquest and trades, Romans had more money, so they bought huge mansions. Examples: Generals, officials, and traders typically bought latifundias Census: The books definition (p.135)- a population count Yesterdays example- Augustus ordered a population count in order to make the tax system in Rome fairer. 8:30 After each vocabulary word is introduced in the context of the Roman Empire, ask the following question: Is there a recent instance you can think of to relate to any of these words? For each vocabulary word, guide each student by asking inferring questions. For example, for latifundia compare it to new rappers in todays society coming into wealth and buying mansions. Then, show YouTube video of MTVs show Cribs, displaying Lil Waynes mansion.

8:40 Assessment/ Checks for understanding: Split the class into two groups. In group one, assign them to read the first three paragraphs introducing Caesars rise to power, and his political reforms. In group two, assign them to read the last three paragraphs describing Caesars assassination. Walk around the classroom and work with the groups discussion, pose questions, answer questions, and keep the student on task. At 9:00, gather the class together, and have one student from each group read their summary. Ask the following question to the class: What is your overall impression of Caesar? Was he a good leader? Did he deserve to die? Ask questions based on students responses. 9:15 Review Ask the meaning and for example of each vocabulary word to students. Then review the objective of the class. Ask students if they feel they have a better understanding of the Roman Empire, if not, do they have any questions. Ask them to evaluate the teacher, did they feel I fulfilled the objective of the lesson?
