BRIEF NOTE Remodeling Village Dewatwal Pond (Liquid Waste Management, TSC Programme)

Village Dewatwal is one of the prominent villages of the District Ludhiana, situated on the periphery of Ludhiana city. It is also located on Ludhiana-Ferozpur highway about 15 km away from Ludhiana.

Population for year 2010 is project to be 2430 persons. Potable piped water supply was provided to village Dewatwal from water works at village Gahaour an estimated cost of Rs.24.30 Lac during Jan-1997, under ARWSP programme of GoI. The designed service level was 40 lpcd. Later, the residents of village Dewatwal demand more service level, hence independent water works at village Dewatwal has been proposed at an estimated cost of Rs. 37.48 lac under World Bank aided project. Work is in progress and scheme is likely to be commissioned up to Aug-2010.

Waste water from water supply and individual tubewells has resulted in sanitation problems in the village Dewatwal. The sullage water got accumulated the village Pond spread over an area of 6 acres. This resulted in unhygienic & poor sanitation conditions To improve hygienic and sanitation situation in sanitation DDWS encouraged Gram Panchyat (GP) to remodel/renovate its Pond. Funds

amounting to Rs.5.00 lac was provided to GP Dewatwal, under TSC Programme. Rs.1.25 lac was contributed by residents of Dewatwal as beneficiary Share. The remodel design of Pond was based on standard design provided under liquid waste management of TSC Programme. The village Pond originally spread over an area of 6 Acres was remodeled to a compacted area of 3.5 Acre, thereby reclaiming about 2.5 acres of prime land worth crores, which can be used for other useful purposes.

GP has also planned to plant trees around the perimeter of the pond & the remodeled pond can be leased for fish farming, which would be a source of revenue. Treated water shall be used for irrigation purposes at tariff fixed by GP later. Hence the pond which was a source of nuisance has become a source of revenue.

Buoyant on the success of this village, DWSS is proposing to remodel the ponds of around 800 village of the district Ludhiana an estimated cost of Rs.5lac each for which funds amounting to 40 crore are required, hence a humble request was made to GoI to provide funds for this noble cause.
