How Did Helen Become What It Is Today?

Helen, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Chattahoochee River, is a re-creation of an alpine village complete with cobblestone alleys and old-world towers. This Northeast Georgia village has a rich history linked to the Cherokee Indians and their burial mounds as well as early settlers who arrived in the early 1900s to mine for gold and cut virgin timber for a thriving lumber industry. Now celebrating its 41st year as a mountain community with a touch of Bavaria, Helens evolution into an alpine village began in 1968 when a group of local businessmen met to discuss ways to revitalize their town. Downtown Helen in the 1960s They approached a nearby artist friend who had been stationed in Germany. He sketched the buildings, added gingerbread trim, details and colors to the buildings, giving an Alpine look to the entire town. In January 1969, business owners and local carpenters began turning ideas into reality and all downtown stores were renovated. Faces of buildings were painted with scenes of Bavaria and North Georgia, mirroring the migration of early settlers. In 2002 alone, $1.2 million was spent on improvements in the downtown area. Helen also commemorates its historic past when the early settlers came to this remote area. A village with mountain heritage and a touch of Bavaria, Helen has created a unique experience for its visitor. So, this is the story of Helen, the miracle of a small, remote mountain community that revitalized itself in various ways throughout several centuries and that today hosts nearly 2 million visitors each year.

What does Helen have to Offer? Just northeast of Atlanta, off

Interstate 985-365, and southwest of Greenville, SC., off Interstate 85, Helen provides visitors a place to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. More than 200 specialty and import shops, restaurants and over 1,100 quality rooms are located in Helen. Outside of town, cabins and chalets are available, many with cozy fireplaces in secluded settings. Visitors can enjoy river tubing, horseback riding, golf, canoeing, fishing, mountain biking or hiking to one of the many majestic waterfalls close by. Helen hosts one of the nations longest Oktoberfests each year, bringing in thousands of revelers.

What is Helens Climate Like? Temperatures in the North Georgia Mountains vary greatly. Summertime temperatures range from 90 degrees F during the day to 50 degrees F during the night, while winter temperatures range from 60 degrees F during the day to a low of 20 degrees F at night. Usually, the cool mountain breezes make the climate very comfortable for everyone.

Atlanta: Approximately 85 miles NE - 1 1/2 hours. North on I-85 to Gainesville Exit
113 - Hwy. 985-365. Go 42 miles on Hwy. 365 to Hwy. 384. Turn left, go 16 miles to GA Hwy. 75, turn right and go three miles into Helen.

GA 400: Take 400 North until it ends. Continue on Hwy. 115. Go 5 miles to the traffic
light. Turn right on to Hwy. 52/115. Go 13 miles to Cleveland. At traffic light, turn left on to U.S. 129 N, go to the next traffic light and turn right on to Hwy. 75. 9 miles to Helen.

South Carolina: Take I-85 South to Lavonia, GA Exit 173 (Hwy. 17, Helen Toccoa).
Travel West toward Toccoa and Clarkesville following Hwy. 17 signs to Helen.

Chattanooga: Approximately 132 miles - 3 hours. Go south on I-75 to Dalton, GA.

Take Hwy. 76 to Ellijay, then continue South on Hwy. 52 to Dahlonega. At Dahlonega continue on 52/115 to Cleveland, GA, at 1st traffic light in Cleveland, turn left on Hwy. 129, go to next light. Then right on Ga. Hwy. 75 and travel 9 miles to Helen.

Knoxville: Approximately 166 miles - 4 hours. Go I-75 South to Cleveland, TN. Go

East on Hwy. 64 to junction of U.S. 129 South. Take 129 for about 40 miles to junction of State Hwy. 75 Alt. Continue on 75 Alt. for 9 miles to junction of State Hwy. 75 turn right go 1 mile into Helen.

Wetlands Loop Trail (1.3 miles from Smithgall Woods Visitors Center) An easy 1/2 mile loop trail that passes a beaver pond and wetland area. Water fowl and frogs are residents that hikers may see or hear. Our Frogs of Smithgall Woods guide makes it possible to identify frogs by their call. Martin Mine Trail (2.1 miles from Smithgall Woods Visitors Center) This memorial trail is a moderate 1/2 mile hike to a beautiful waterfall tucked into the mountain. Deeply shaded by rhododendron, it is a cool retreat in summer and lush hike any time of the year. In addition, there are unmarked roads throughout the park that can be hiked.

Unicoi State Park Hiking Trails

(2 miles) Take GA 75 north from Helen for 5 miles. Turn right into the Andrews Cove Recreation Area. Smith Creek Trail This trail offers a serene walk through dense patches of rhododendron, mountain laurel, hemlock and ferns. Travel up and over Hickory Nut Ridge and through hardwood stands and across several small mountain streams and springs. This trail ends at Unicoi State Park campground. (4.6 miles) Location: Take GA 75 north from Helen for 1 mile. Turn right on GA 356 and drive 1.5 miles. Turn left at the entrance road to Anna Ruby Falls. Hike the 0.4 mile trail to Anna Ruby Falls. Smith Creek Trail begins at the right of the first observation bridge. Parking fee required.

Dukes Creek Falls (Chattooga R.D.)
Dukes Creek Trail (.8 mile in length) winds its way into Dukes Creek Gorge where it dead ends across from the 300-foot Dukes Creek Falls. The area offers scenic beauty and excellent gold panning opportunities. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen for 1.5 miles. Turn left on 75 Alternate and go 2.3 miles to the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway. Turn right and go two miles to the Dukes Creek Falls Recreation Area.

Horse Trough Falls (Chattooga R.D.)

Horse Trough Falls Trail (.4 mile in length) leads to the beautiful Horse Trough Falls and is an excellent trail for novice hikers. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen for eight miles to Unicoi Gap. Turn left onto F.S. Road 44 (Wilkes Creek Road). Go 5.4 miles to a sharp curve and take the right fork. Go 0.2 mile, ford the stream and follow colored blazes on the trees.

Mill Creek Falls

The waterfall on Ground Hog Branch drops about 150 feet where it combines with the main Mill Creek. The combined streams plunge another estimated 150 feet, ending in a series of rapids, which cascade down the Mill Creek Gorge. Directions: From Hiawassee, take U.S. 76 east. Turn right on GA Highway 75. Travel 3.5 miles. Turn left on Mill Creek Road (F.S. Road 26) for 2.5 miles. The road crosses Mill Creek 1.5 miles from the pavement. Parking is available in the camping area on the right and at the pull-outs on the left and right side of the road. Hike through the primitive camping area and follow the west side of Mill Creek downstream.

Raven Cliff Falls (Chattooga R.D.)

These falls are one of the most unusual in the North Georgia area because the water flows through a split in the face of a solid rock outcropping to the ground 100 feet below. Behind the split, the water drops approximately 60 feet and then rushes through the rock face and drops 20 feet into a deep pool. The water then cascades 20 more feet to Dodd Creek. Three other waterfalls can be found on Dodd Creek ~ the largest is downstream from Raven Cliff Falls and measures 70 feet. The area offers excellent opportunities for dayhiking, however, there are no facilities of any type provided. Visitors are encouraged to exercise extreme caution in this underdeveloped area. Directions: TAke GA 75 N from Helen for 1.5 miles. Turn left on 75 Alternate and travel 2.3 miles to the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway. Turn right and travel 2.8 miles to the trailhead and parking area.

Sautee Covered Bridge

It is also known as Helen Bridge, Sautee Bridge, Nacoochee Bridge and Chickamauga Bridge and crosses Chickamauga Creek. Proclaimed Georgias smallest covered bridge, it was featured in the film Id Climb the Highest Mountain. Will Pardue built it in 1895 in the Queen Post design with a length of 36.8 feet and a width of 11 feet 10 inches. There is parking and a picnic area as well as a Historic Marker. Directions: Take GA 75 north of Cleveland for 7 miles, turn right onto GA 17 for roughly 2 miles, then left on GA 255 for 2 miles near the town of Sautee.

Anna Ruby Falls (706) 878-1448
Spectacular Anna Ruby Falls is located in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The quiet coolness of the area is broken only by the thundering rush of water flowing over the rugged cliff face. Anna Ruby Falls marks the junction of Curtis and York Creeks. Both creeks begin on Tray Mountain and are fed by underground springs, rain and snow. Curtis Creek drops 153 feet and York Creek drops 50 feet to from the twin waterfalls known as Anna Ruby Falls. From the falls, Smith Creek tumbles downhill to Unicoi Lake and then the Chattahoochee River. Its journey continues south, eventually joining the Appalachicola River in Florida and ending its 550-mile journey in the Gulf of Mexico. A paved 0.4-mile footpath leads from the parking lot to the base of the falls. Walking is easy to moderate and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Benches are provided along the way. Walking shoes are recommended since the trail can be wet and slippery. The Lions Eye Trail gives people who are blind or have visual impairments the opportunity to experience the environment along Smith Creek. Braille signs interpret various features of the area. Ambitious hikers will find the 4.6-mile Smith Creek Trail a challenge. This longer trail leads from the base of Anna Ruby Falls to Unicoi State Park. In addition to hiking opportunites, the area also offers 11 picnic sites with tables and grills. Who was Anna Ruby? After the Civil War the land surrounding and including Anna Ruby Falls was purchased by Colonel John H. Captain Nichols. Colonel Nichols named the twin waterfalls in honor of his daughter, his sole surviving family member after the death of his wife and two infant sons.
