1. (a) Discuss the underlying principle in complexometric titration taking the exam-
ple of determination of Ca2+ with EDTA.
(b) What is the pH of a solution that is 0.04 M in formic acid &0.01M in sodium
formate?
(Ka of formic acid is 1.74 × 10−4 )
5. (a) What are anti-knocking compounds? How can octane rating be improved .
(b) A Sample of coal was found to contain the following C: 81%; H: 4%; O=2%;
N=10%; the remaining being ash. Estimate the quantity of minimum air re-
maining for complete combustion of 1Kg of the sample. Find the composition
of dry flue gas by volume, if 40% excess air is supplied.
6. (a) Name the different units of hardness and explain their interconversion.
(b) Describe the disadvantages of hard water when used for steam generation in
boilers.
8. An exhausted Zeolite softner was regenerated by passing 150 lit of NaCl solution,
having strength of 150 g/L of NaCl. If the hardness of water is 800 ppm, calculate
the total volume of water that is softned by this softner.

1. (a) State Beer Lambert’s law and explain the terms transmittance, absorbance
and molarextinction co efficient .How are they related to each other?
(b) What is Cupferron? Discuss its use as an organic precipitant with suitable
examples.
2. (a) What are electroanalytical methods ?Explain different electro analytical meth-
ods with suitable examples.
(b) Give the value of diffusion current if c=1mole/litre D=3.2 µ a,m=1.41mg/sec,t=1.85
sec (n=1).
6. Compare the lime-soda, zeolite and ion-exchange processes used for softening wa-
ter.
8. Calculate the total hardness in o Fr and o Clarke for a sample of water that showed
the following analysis:-
KOH = 0.0056 gm/litre; Ca(HCO3 )2 = 0.0162 gm/litre; NaCl = 0.585 gm/litre;
MgSO4 = 0.024 gm/litre; MgCl2 = 0.019 gm/litre; Ca(NO3 )2 = 0.0164 gm/litre.
Assume that the masses of Mg, Ca, K and Na atoms are respectively 24, 40, 39
and 23.

8. Determine the temporary, permanent and total hardness in PPM units for water
which showed the following analysis:-
NaCl = 5.85 mg/litre; KCl = 7.45 mg/litre; CaCl2 = 11.1 mg/litre; Mg(HCO3 )2 =
14.6 mg/litre; MgSO4 = 12 mg/litre; Ca(HCO3 )2 = 16.2 mg/litre.
Assume that the atomic weights of Na, Mg, K and Ca are 23, 24, 39 and 40
respectively.

5. (a) Explain the difference between straight-run gasoline and synthetic petrol

(c) When 0.935g of a fuel underwent complete combustion in excess of oxygen,
the increase of temperature of water in the bomb calorimeter containing 1365g
of water was 2.40 C. Calculate the higher calorific value of the fuel, if the water
equivalent of the calorimeter etc. is 135gms.
6. (a) Explain the difference between carbonate and non-carbonate hardness of wa-
ter.
(b) State the harmful effects of silica present in water.
(c) Write a note on sterilization of drinking water.
8. Determine the amounts of lime and soda needed in kilos for softening 10,000 litres
of water using 82 PPM of NaAlO2 as coagulant. The analysis of water was as
follows:-

KCl = 74.5 PPM; NaCl = 58.5 PPM; Mg(HCO3 )2 = 146 PPM; CaCl2 = 111PPM;
Dissolved CO2 = 44 PPM.
Given that the wt. of Na, Mg, K, Ca and Al are 23, 24, 39, 40 and 27 amu
respectively.
