IAV GmbH is one of the leading providers of engineering service to the automotive industry. The company has expertise in the area of powertrain, electronics and vehicle development and provides its customers with product ready solutions for the entire vehicle on a one-stop shop basis.
IAV provides services in areas of vehicle electronics, powertrain development and powertrain mechatronics. In Electronics, the company's service range covers system and electronics specifications, simulation, hardware and software development as well as electrical system development and system testing for the whole vehicle. In addition, the company designs complete test vehicles. The company was founded in 1983 by Prof. Dr. Hermann Appel as a universityaffiliated research institute. Currently, the company is a limited liability company. Volkswagen is the biggest stakeholder in IAV with a 50% stake. Other major shareholders are Continental (20%), ArvinMeritor (10%), Freudenberg (10%) and SABIC Innovative Plastic (10%). IAV has international presence with 14 subsidiaries in North and South America, Europe and Asia. As on 31 December 2009, the company had 3,850 employees. IAVs customers include major automakers and tier one suppliers. Among automakers, the company provides engineering services to BMW, DAF, Daimler, Fiat, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Navistar, PSA Peugeot Citron, Renault, Tata Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo. The companys major customers among tier one suppliers include ArvinMeritor, Behr, Bosch, Continental, Delphi, Detroit Diesel, Deutz, Faurecia, Flex-n-Gate, Freudenberg, General Electric, Magna, Peguform, SABIC Innovative Plastic and ZF. Recent Developments Corporate strategy IAV focuses on the areas of vehicle comfort and safety. As a development partner the company works in collaboration with the automakers and tier one suppliers. The company covers almost entire vehicle electronics area ranging from chassis electronics, driver assistance, infotainment, powertrain and safety to vehicle electrical system development. IAV is also working in the area of electric vehicles (EV). The company has developed a recharger that allows EVs to be charged as they drive over any road embedded with a recessed wireless recharging strip, using electromagnetic induction. Joint-venture In December 2010, IAV entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with ETAS on using CaliAV as a platform for guided calibration. The arrangement aims to enhance and further improve efficiency in calibrating control units. New Product Developments: IAV has development centres in Germany located in Berlin, Chemnitz and Gifhorn. Other development centre locations are Dresden, Friedrichshafen, Lenting, Ludwigsburg, Munich, Neckarsulm, Regensburg, Rsselsheim, and Weissach (all in Germany).
