The begining of IGGEC Sagar

The following article has been contributed by Mr. I S Rajput of 1987 batch

Sagar City has long been the center of quality education, with its famous university setup by Dr. Hari Singh Gaur, but it was
missing an institute for quality technical education. On other hand other cities of MP like Rewa, Ujjain, Vidisha and Bilaspur
(with much lower population), were already having engineering colleges. For many years students of Sagar University and a
technical school in Sagar were raising the demand for it from time to time.

During the 1977-79, then Education Minister of MP Sh. Laxmi Narayan Yadav took the initiative and completed most of the
formalities for opening of Engg. College at Sagar. During the year 1980-81, then Chief Minister Sh. Arjun Singh declared the
opening of college.

Initially it was started in Hostel of B. Ed. College near Tilli Gaon, later on some of the private buildings were hired for hostel
facility (like Parashar building, Chouhan building and Raman building etc.)

The opening of College (then Govt. Engg. College Sagar) was done in 1981 with Civil branch having intake capacity of 40
seats. The initial batch after passing first year was transferred to other colleges of the state, according to their choice,
because of lack of infrastructural facilities needed for higher classes.

After passing of first year exam, the second batch (now being referred as first batch) was also tried to transfer in similar
fashion by administration, also some of the batch mates were of the same opinion. But other batch mates were very
reluctant for such repeated transfer, as this policy was not in interest of institution and because of this escape route,
administration was not making enough efforts to arrange the facilities required.

The matter of transfer remains alive even up to 1983-84 when first batch reached its third year (then it was a five year
degree course). Ultimately we the students of GEC Sagar went on strike, and as a result, then Jan Shakti Niyojan Minister
Sh. Vithal Bhai Patel arrived at hostel to discuss the problem and he agreed to arrange all the facilities required at Sagar
campus itself. Consequently some special arrangement were made, like students will go for practical to other colleges on a
trip of 15 days or so and all the practical will be completed during this period , second the visiting professors will come to
Sagar from other colleges and will complete the subjects for which we were not teachers.
In 1983 intake of college increased to 60 with introduction of mechanical branch (20 seats) and next year (1984) more 20
seats added for Electrical branch.

Those days the staff strength was quite low, but the staff members, were dedicated to the cause of making IGEC a
successful institution, in-spite of deficient resources. With the great efforts of faculty members under the leadership of then
Principal Sh. C A Keshwani and later Sh. A K Seth (1986 onward), along with students energetic efforts (like agitation, and
representation); we could get the facilities quickly. Consequently by 1986-87 our college shifted to a new building (with
bigger space) near University ground where new labs with better equipments were also set up. Mean while selection of new
site for construction of proper building/campus of college was in progress.

Initially the site was proposed at North West out skirt of city on Jhansi road, but we all students opposed it and ultimately the
site was finalized in Baheria (i.e. the present site). The Monogram of the College, and model of new college building were
prepared by Sh. Nikhil Khosa, Mech. Branch, pass out 1988.

During the initial years of college in-spite of short strength of students and the staff members, a lot of personality
development and extra-curricular activities were conducted for better environment/facility/image of college and students.
Here I would like to mention few. I could recall

A) Students union: - During those days election of students union in educational institutions were not banned. Accordingly
in 1982 being their being only one batch Shri Rajeev B Arya was elected as CR. In 1983. Students of College (two batches
with strength of 120) demanded a proper election for various office bearers and accordingly election were held by college

administration but ( due to some problem in clearance from university) result of same was partially declared, and only result
for post of president ( with my name) was declared. In 1984-85 two panel of students were formed named as GECSU panel
and SS Panel, and during election of 1984-85 on the basis of consensus between two panels all office bearers were elected
unopposed ( Sh. D K Singh (GECSU) - President, Anil Sen (SSP)-Vice president, Sh. P S Tambe (GECSU) Gen Secretary
and Joint secretary of SSP (name not in memory). In 1985-86 efforts for consensus between two panels could not succeed
and election was conducted accordingly, Sh. I S Rajput (GECSU)–President, Sh. Nandram Binjhare (GECSU)-Vice
President, Sh. Rajesh Bhargava (GECSU)-Gen Sec and Sh. Anirudha Choube (GECSU) Joint Sec declared winner. From
1986-87 onwards the elections of student unions were banned and nomination started on the basis of marks. Sh. Atul Singh
was nominated as President in 1986-87. During these five years a lot of activities were done from student’s union side
which was always supported by each and every student irrespective of panels to which they belong. Every year two or more
times agitation were done to achieve the facilities like, Construction of Road from Tahsili to college, arrangement of
Teaching staff, Lab equipments, Hostel facility, college bus and against the atrocities by outsiders on college students. All
the moves were well supported by faculty members and college administration. Most of the time we got our demands
fulfilled without any violence and police cases on students.

B. Cultural and Sports activities: - In spite of less strength every year we used to arrange the Sports
tournaments/competition under the guidance of our respected teachers. Here I will like to mention the name of S K Batt Sir,
Verma Sir and Kureshi Sir, who were involved very actively and in devoted manner for development of such qualities among
students. Prominent students in sports were Sh. D K Singh, Sh. Rajesh Shrivastava ,Sh. Sunil Somani ( Chess), Sh. Indranil
Debnath, Sh Manoj Sharma, Sh Verma and Sh. Shekhar.

The annual day of college was conducted every year compulsorily. The students started preparing for the cultural programs
months in advance under guidance of our teachers. Students from both the panels participated with the true spirit of
completion which made the programs successful and memorable.

Names of a few “artists” worth mention here are Sh. Avadh Bihari Yadav( Lokgeet Singer), Shri Rajiv Soni, Sh SP Dwivedi,
Sh C K singh, Sh Rajive Markam, Sh Avinash Gupta. Sh Avadh Bihari Yadav expired in 1985, in his memory one shield was
establish for singing. The initial years of college history were full of struggle and scarcity but in spite of all this we never
backed out on any of issue, be it activities of sports, cultural programs, annual function, strike/agitations, fighting with
troubling-outsiders. In fact all this helped a lot in our personality development, which we are experience in our day to day life
and working till now. The products of Sagar engineering college are no way less than the products of other reputed
colleges. We all the products of initial batches wish for very healthy environment in our alma mater, and hope that now
being a bigger college more such activities are carried out for better name/fame of institution and for all round personality
development of student

Present Student Grievances section

This section will carry the grievances sent by the present student of IGEC ,in which they can expect some kind of
help from the ISAA. Students can mail in their problems at igecalumni@gmail.com.

LACK OF STAFF AND LAB EQUIPMENTS

Though there has been computer science subject in the syllabus now, there is no computer science teacher appointed.
The practical sessions in the college are just formality to finish up the syllabus and submit records. This produces
engineers with only theoretical knowledge.

HYIGENE CONDITION AT IGEC

Classes and the furniture remain covered wit dust all throughout the session. Only the corridors get cleaned regularly.
Even the toilets are in a bad shape and get cleaned only when any some authority is on a visit.
SPORT FACILITIES AT IGEC
There are no indoor games like table tennis carom or chess, Only outdoor game facility available is volleyball .

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

There is a reason why I have kept this section on this page. I would like to tell a small story I read as
a child in the newspaper An Indian writer was traveling in a subway in Japan. The seat next to him
was un occupied and he noticed that the seat cover was a bit torn and was coming out. A lady in her
forties boarded the train at the next station. She also noticed that the seat cover was a bit torn.
Authors destination came and he got down from the train. Next day by chance the author was in the
same compartment, at the next station the same lady boarded the train and went straight to the seat
she was sitting on yesterday, and noticing the that the cover hasn't been mended brought out a
needle and thread and started sewing the seat herself. The author was amazed, he walked over to
the lady and asked that why was she doing it and wasn’t it the authorities responsibility to get this
stuff done. The lady replied with a smile that she considered the train her property and she would
not like to wait for authorities to come and fix it when she herself can do that in a minute. No wonder
a country totally ravaged in world war II ,and as densely populated as India, is centuries ahead of
India.
These are the qualities we Indians need to imbibe in ourselves. We need to stop cribbing and
passing on the buck and instead start acting. I myself confess that while in the college there were
numerous occasions were i could have made a difference, but only thing i did was blame the
authorities. My appeal to the existing students is not to commit the same mistake. They can learn a
lot from the seniors of our earlier batches (check Mr I.S. Rajput's article) Please stop waiting for
authorities to respond and start acting. They need to remember as their career is at stake, there is
lot they can do for themselves and the institution with their small acts, they need to go out of the way
and do something to make a difference. The same goes with the Alumni. Lot is desired where
everyone can chip in and contribute. The very purpose of we associating is improvement and
socializing. Looking forward when we act and not just look others to initiate.
