This technology shrinks vast distances, accelerating the pace of business reforms and revolutionizing the way companies are managed. It allows direct, ubiquitous links to anyone anywhere and anytime to build up interactive relationships. A combination of time and space, called the Internet promises to bring unprecedented changes in our lives and business. Internet or net is an inter- connection of computer communication networks spanning the entire globe, crossing all geographical boundaries. It has re-defined the methods of communication, work study, education, business, leisure, health, trade, banking, commerce and what not it is virtually changing every thing and we are living in dot.com age. Net being an interactive two way medium, through various websites, enables participation by individuals in business to business and business to consumer commerce, visit to shopping arcades, games, etc. in cyber space even the information can be copied, downloaded and retransmitted. 2. E-commerce
Electronic commerce is associated with buying and selling over computer communication networks. It helps conduct traditional commerce through new way of transferring and processing of information. Information is electronically transferred from computer to computer in an automated way. E-commerce refers to the paperless exchange of business information using electronic data inter change, electronic technologies. It not only reduces manual processes and paper transactions but also helps organization move to a fully electronic environment and change the way they operated. PCs and networking attempts to introduce banks of the tools and technologies required for electronic commerce. The computers are either workstations of individual office works or serves where large databases and information reside. Network connects both categories of computers; the various operating systems are the most basis program within a computer. It manages the resources of the computer system in a fair and efficient manner. Now we can enter in to the concept known as online trading. In the past, investors had no option but to contact their broker to get real time access to market data. The net brings data to the investor on-line and net broking enables him to trade on a click of mouse. Now information has become easily accessible to both retail as well as big investor.

EVOLUTION OF BROKING IN INDIA:

The evolution of a broking in India can be categorized in three phases Stockbrokers will offer on their sites features such as live portfolio manager, live quotes, market research and news, etc. to attract more investors.

Brokers will offer online broking and relationship management by providing and offering analysis and information to investors during broking and non- broking hours based on their profile and needs, i.e. customized services.

In Online share trading the trading is done by using computer and Internet connection. In other words trading done through computer having Internet connection is called online share trading. Instead of going to any share broker you can do trading yourself using online share trading method. In this method you must have a computer and Internet connection or else you can make use of Internet cafe. CHAPTER 6 RISKS INVOLVED

BASIC RISKS INVOLVED IN TRADING ON THE STOCK EXCHANGE: Risk Of Higher Volatility:
Volatility refers to the dynamic changes in price that securities undergo when trading activity continues on the Stock Exchange. Generally, higher the volatility of a security/contract, greater is its price swings. There may be normally greater volatility in thinly traded securities/ contracts than in active securities/ contracts. As a result of volatility your order may only be partially executed or not executed at all, or the price at which your order got executed may be substantially different from the last traded price or change substantially different from the last traded price or change substantially thereafter, resulting in notional or real losses.

Risk Of Lower Liquidity:

Liquidity refers to the ability of market participants to buy and/ or sell securities / contracts expeditiously at a competitive price and with minimum price difference. Generally, it is assumed that more the numbers of orders available in a market, greater are the liquidity. Liquidity is important because with greater liquidity, it is easier for investors to buy and/ or/ sell securities/ contracts swiftly and with minimum price difference, and as a result, investors are more likely to pay or receive a competitive price for securities/ contracts purchased or sold. There may be a risk of lower liquidity in some securities/ contracts as compared to active securities/ contracts. As a result, your order may only be partially executed, or may be executed with relatively greater price difference or may not be executed at all Buying/ selling without intention of giving and/ or taking delivery of a securities, as a part of a day trading strategy. May also result into losses. Because in such a situation, stocks may have to be sold/ purchased at a low/high prices, compared to the expected price levels, so as not to have any obligation to deliver/ receive a security.

Risk Of Wider Spreads:

Spread refers to the difference in best buy price and best sell price. It represents the differential between the price of buying a security and immediately selling it or vice versa. Lower liquidity and higher volatility may result in wider than normal spreads for less liquid or illiquid securities/ contracts. This in turn will hamper better price formulation.

Risk- Reducing Orders:

Most exchanges have a facility for investors to place Limit Orders, Stop Loss Orders etc. The placing of such orders (e.g., stop-loss orders, or limit orders), which are intended to limit losses to certain amounts, may not be effective many a time because rapid movement in market conditions may make it impossible to execute such orders. 1 .A market order will be executed promptly, subject to availability of orders on opposite side, without regard to price and that, while the customer may receive a prompt execution of a market order, the execution may be at available prices of outstanding orders, which satisfy the order quantity, on price time priority. It may be understood that these prices may be significantly different from the last traded price or the best price in that security. 2. A limit order will be executed only at the limit price specified for the order or a better price. However, while the customer receives price protection, there is a possibility that the order may not be executed at all. 3.A stop loss order is generally placed away from the current price of a stock/ contract, and such order gets activated if and when the stock/ contract reaches, or trades through, the stop price. Sell stop orders are entered ordinarily below the current price, and buy stop orders are entered ordinarily above the current price. When the stock reaches the pre-determined price, the stop loss order converts to a market /limit order and is executed at the limit or better. There is no assurance therefore that the limit order will be executed at the limit or better.

There is no assurance therefore that the limit order will be executable arises, just as with a regular limit order.

Risk Of News Announcements:

Issuers make news announcements that may impact the price of the securities/ contracts. These announcements may occur during trading, and when combined with lower liquidity and higher volatility, may suddenly cause an unexpected positive or negative movement in the price the security/ contract.

Risk Of Rumors:
Rumors about companies at times float in the market through word of mouth, newspapers, websites, or news agencies, etc. The investors should be wary of and should desist from acting on rumors.

System Risk:
High volume trading will frequently occur at the market opening and before market closes. Such high volumes may occur at any point in the day. These may cause delays in order execution or confirmation. 1. During periods of volatility, on account of market participants continuously modifying their order quantity or prices or placing fresh orders, there may be execution and its combinations. 2. Under certain market conditions, it may be difficult or impossible to liquidate a position in the market at a reasonable price or at all, when there are no outstanding orders either on the buy side or sell side, or if trading is halted in a security due to any action on account of unusual trading activity or stock hitting circuit filters or for any other reason.

System/ Network Congestion:

Trading on NSE is in electronic mode based on a satellite, combination of technologies & computer systems to place & route orders. You are cautioned to note that although these problems may be temporary in nature, but when you have outstanding open positions or un exceeding orders., these represents risks because of your obligations to settle all executive transaction.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI): With the objective of improving market efficiency, enhancing transparency, checking unfair trade practice and bringing the Indian market up to international slandered, a package of reforms consisting of measures to liberalize, regulate and develop the securities market was introduced during the 1990s. This has changed corporate securities market beyond recognition in this decade. The practice of allocation of resources among different competing entities as well as its terms by a central authority was discontinued. The secondary market overcome the geographical barriers by moving to screen based trading

CHAPTER 7 STOCK MARKET OF INDIA

THE TWO MAIN STOCKS MARKET OF INDIA ARE: National Stock Exchange(NSE) Bombay stock exchange(BSE)

BSE:- At the end of the American civil war, the brokers who thrived out of this war in 1874,
found a place in a street, where they would easily assemble and transact business. This street is nowadays, popularly known as DALAL STREET. In 1887, they formally established in Bombay, and were known as Native Shares and Stock Brokers Association. In 1895, it acquired a premise in the same street and finally was inaugurated in 1899 with the name Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). India's premier stock exchange Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) can also trace back its origin to as far as 125 years when it started as a voluntary non-profit making association. You hear about it any time it reaches a new high or a new low, and you also hear about it daily in statements like 'The BSE Sensitive Index rose 5% today'. Obviously, stocks and stock markets are important. Stocks of public limited companies are bought and sold at a stock exchange. But what really are stock exchanges? Known also as News on the stock market appears in different media every day. he stock market or bourse, a stock exchange is an organized marketplace for securities (like stocks, bonds, options) featured by the centralization of supply and demand for the transaction of orders by

member brokers, for institutional and individual investors. The exchange makes buying and selling easy. The need for stock exchanges developed out of early trading activities in

agricultural and other commodities. During the middle Ages, traders found it easier to use credit that required supporting documentation of drafts, notes and bills of exchange. (Figure-1)

India's other major stock exchange National Stock Exchange (NSE), promoted by leading financial institutions, was established in April 1993. Over the years, several stock exchanges have been established in the major cities of India. There are now 23 recognized stock exchanges Mumbai (BSE, NSE and OTC), Calcutta, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kanpur, Ludhiana, Mangalore, Patna, Pune, Rajkot, Vadodara, Indore and Meerut.

NSE:-With the liberalization of Indian economy it was found necessary to lift the Indian

stock

markets on par with the international standards. The NSE was incorporated in 1992 by industrial development bank of India, industrial credit and Investment Corporation of India, industrial finance corporation of India, all insurance corporations, selected commercial banks and others. NSE is Indias leading stock exchange covering more than 160 cities and towns across the country. It provides the modern fully

computerized trading system designed to offer investors across the country a safe and easy way to invest to liquidate investment and securities. Investors in many areas of country did not have the same access and opportunity to trade so there arise the need for setting up the national stock exchange. CHAPTER 7 LITERATURE REVIEW

LITERATURE REVIEW :

Brief Summaries of Articles Reviewed and Relevant to the Project Involving Modeling of Economic Series Coordinated with Interest Rate Scenarios Ahlgrim, D'Arcy and Gorvett, 1999, Parameterizing Interest Rate Models, Casualty Actuarial Society Forum, summer 1-50. http://www.casact.org/pubs/forum/99sforum/99sf001.pdf Uses simulation to develop future scenarios for various applications. Wilkies Provides a review of historical interest rate movements from 1953-1999, summarizes the key elements of several interest rate models and describes how to select parameters of the models to fit historical movements. Ait-Sahalia, 1999, Do Interest Rates Really Follow Continuous-Time Markov Diffusions? University of Chicago Working Paper Examines whether interest rates follow a diffusion process (continuous timeMarkov process), given that only discrete-time interest rates are available. Based on the extended period 1857 to 1995, this work finds that neither short-term interest rates nor long-term interest rates follow Markov processes, but the slope of the yield curve is a univariate Markov process and a diffusion process. Bernstein, 1996, Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk, New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Provides an excellent long term perspective of risk and the development of methods to measure and deal with risk. Explains the shift from a focus on hazard risk to financial risk over the last few decades. Casualty Actuarial Society Financial Analysis Committee (CASFAC), 1989, A Study of the Effects of Asset/Liability Mismatch on Property/Casualty Insurance Companies, Valuation Issues, 1-52. http://www.casact.org/pubs/dpp/dpp89/89dpp001.pdf Discusses the potential impact of an asset-liability mismatch for property-liability insurers. By mismatch, this article means that anticipated cash flows from existing assets and liabilities will not precisely offset each other. Several mismatch scenarios are evaluated, and it is found that both potential risk and reward are greater, the greater the mismatch. Chapman and Pearson, 2001, What Can Be Learned from Recent Advances in Estimating Models of the Term Structure, forthcoming. Provides a comprehensive review of term structure models. They conclude that volatility increases with the level of the short term interest rate and, within normal interest rate ranges, mean reversion is weak. They also point out that the

appropriate measure for volatility depends on whether the period 1979-1982 (when the Federal Reserve shifted policy from focusing on interest rates to inflation rates) is treated as an aberration or included in the sample period. They also conclude that more research is needed to determine which interest rate model is best. Chapman and Pearson, 2001, Recent Advances in Estimating Term-Structure Models, Financial Analysts Journal (July/August), 77-95. Provides a summary of term structure literature and contrasts the issues that have been resolved with those areas that require further research. They point out that mean reversion of interest rates is weak and that absolute volatility appears to be related to rate levels. Unfortunately, the specific nature of volatility is currently unresolved. Cox, Ingersoll, and Ross, 1985, A Theory of the Term Structure of Interest Rates, Econometric, 53: 385-407. Using a general equilibrium framework, CIR develop a process for the short-term interest rate. The CIR term structure model is: drt = ( rt )dt + rt dBt Fama, 1984, The Information in the Term Structure, Journal of Financial Economics 13, 509528 Examines the ability of forward rates to forecast future spot rates. Based on data for 1974 and subsequent, he finds evidence that very short-term (one-month) forward rates can forecast spot rates one month ahead. Data prior to 1974 indicate that this predictive power extends five months into the future. Fama, 1990, Term Structure Forecasts of Interest Rates, Inflation, and Real Returns, Journal of Monetary Economics 25, 59-76 Examines the ability to forecast one-year spot interest rates in the context of forecasting its components: the one-year inflation rate, and the real return on one- year bonds. It is found that the expected values of those two components move opposite to one another. This results in a situation where the five-year yield spread (the yield on five-year bonds over the one-year spot rate) is unable to forecast near- term spot rates (one or two years ahead); while the spread has power to forecast the inflation and real return components of the spot rate, those components tend to offset somewhat. As the time horizon is extended, the ability to forecast the spot rate improves. Fama also finds that forecasts of these variables are related to the business cycle. Fama and Bliss, 1987, The Information in Long-Maturity Forward Rates, American Economic Review 77, 680-692 Examines expected returns on U.S. Treasury securities with maturities of up to five years. They find that the one-year interest rate has a mean-reverting tendency, which results in one-year forward rates having some forecasting power two to four years ahead. Thus, the paper provides evidence that, while forward rates are not good forecasters of very near-term changes in interest rates, they are better at forecasting long-term changes. Fisher, 1930, Theory of Interest, New York: The Macmillan Company. Summarizes the economic intuition behind adjusting nominal interest rates based on expected future inflation.

Hardy, 2001, A Regime-Switching Model of Long-Term Stock Returns, North American Actuarial Journal, 5 (2), 41-53. http://www.soa.org/library/naaj/1997-09/naaj0104_4.pdf Using monthly data from the S&P 500 and the Toronto Stock Exchange, a regime- switching lognormal model is parameterized and compared with other models. The author finds the performance of the regime-switching model to be favorable. Heath, Jarrow, and Morton, 1992, Bond Pricing and the Term Structure of Interest Rates: A New Methodology for Contingent Claims Valuation, Econometrica, 60: 77-105. Rather than developing a process for the short rate, HJM model the movements of the entire term structure through a family of forward rate processes. df (t , T ) = (t , T , f (t , T ))dt + (t , T , f (t , T ))dBt where ln P(t , T ) f (t , T ) = T HJM find that the drift in forward rates can be restated in terms of the volatilities, implying that the market price of risk is unimportant in contingent claims valuation.

CHAPTER 10 RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Result of percentage of earning invested in share trading Based on the findings of our project we would like to suggest the following:After sales services and follow up calls are important for getting new references so trained telesales should be appointed for this purpose whose sole work should be to make feedback calls.

Destimoney is having too many financial products right from Demat account General Insurance and not all the salespeople are familiar with each and every product so the work force should be segregated each group dealing in a specific product and the sales target should be given likewise.

While interacting with the investors I found that most of the customers are unaware about the Mutual fund. Some of the people look upon mutual funds and equity trading as gambling. Thus a mutual fund awareness program can help to increase the penetration of mutual funds in the market.

Destimoney hold declare in black ink that they will charge just 1 paisa per transaction. People tend to think that there must be some hidden charges.

Rs750 account opening charges are too high when targeting a corporate so the company should be flexible on this amount.

Destimoneys hold provide periodic training for updating the product knowledge of various financial advisors. Company should have a scheme of rewards and recognition to employees and the field persons to boost their motivation.

CONCLUSIONS:This study confirms the earlier assumptions regarding the role of third party financial service provider in investment management. It was observed that people do invest their money after consulting with financial service provider, but investors have moderate knowledge of third party financial service provider present in the market. The individual investor still prefers to invest in financial products which give risk free returns . This confirms that Indian investors even if they are of high income, well educated, salaried, independent are conservative investors prefer to play safe. The investment product designers can design products which can cater to the investors who are low risk tolerant and can motivate investors to invest in mutual funds to eliminate equity market risks.

HUGE POTENTIAL: All though relatively new entrants in the market, Destimoney is slowly but surel gaining a strong hold because it is finally able to grasp the investment climate in Delhi. Secondly the branch managers at all the branches are very knowledgeable with a lot of experience in the financial markets so under their leadership can definitely expand its base.

The entire workforce consists of mostly youngsters, which means they canbe encouraged and motivated to do good work because they have a long way to go and most of them are eager to climb the ladder. Right now Destimoney is at its nascent stage and will surely grab the major market under its belt very soon like in other fields.

Huge investments taking place:

The Stock Market has been very buoyant until now especially in the past 3 years. This particular trend is very favorable because a soaring SENSEX means higher returns, which encourages the investors to invest their money in the market. Although in the past 3 months the market has shown very unpredictable trend and has already lost over 1000 points.

So in order to make the best the only thing required is to recruit more field staff who should be trained in a proper way to get better results. In case of insurance, it requires push selling because people always associate it with emergencies and unpleasant situations like death and they dont want to think about such situation let alone prepare for them, which means it requires a lot of conviction on part of the executives:
