Speaker on Autism
November 14, 2011 5:30-6:30pm Harry Dolan is the father of a teenage son who has autism. When Mr. Dolan discovered that people with autism are seven times more likely than the rest of us to have an encounter with law enforcement and that many officers and first responders are not trained in recognizing it [autism], he realized that such encounters could turn out very badly. He set out to fix the situation and has been providing training to first responders in central Wisconsin ever since. Mr. Dolan will be sharing his knowledge with us on Monday, November 14. His presentation will start at 5:30pm, will be in room 101, and is free and open to the public.

Autism Facts According to the National Institute of Mental Health (2009), 3.4 out of 1000 children in the United States have autism. They also note that most children with autism struggle with social interaction skills and with both verbal and nonverbal communication. Finally, they indicate that children with autism may also exhibit repetitive behaviors and have unusual responses to sensory experiences.

Mentors Program
If you could go back to your first quarter at Rasmussen and give yourself some advice, what would you say? This quarter we are trying a new approach to increase support for our first quarter students. All new starts are now given a student mentor during orientation. The mentor is a student peer within the same program. As an additional contact, the mentor can assist a student with understanding expectations and may be able to offer valuable advice. Their role is a vital part of the communication between students and staff at Rasmussen College. It is important that new students find momentum from a confident start. Mentors are an important key to their success! Mentors also benefit because they learn to work with new students and gain valuable leadership experience. Student advisors Jean Miller, and Ben Krueger are excited about this new opportunity. We saw many students within the student ambassador group sign up early to volunteer as a mentors. We are proud of the willingness of our students to make this first quarter the best experience possible. The Mentor Program allows students to build relationships and allows Rasmussen the ability to provide students another level of support. This quarter, the following programs and mentors are available: School of Health Sciences: Sandra Miller - MHT Joan Dulak - MEDAS Erin Yusten - MEDAS Tiffani Smith - MEDAS Pete Vandre MEDAS Enita Schreiner - MEDAS School of Business: Tiffany Rodriguez - BMMS Michelle Cowan-TemplinACAS Cassandra Linke - BHR Brian Langreck - BAB Susan Wegerer ACBS School of Justice Studies: Dawn Pulchinski PLA Ron Rose CJ Mary Jorgensen HS Amy Staubs PLA Billie West - CJ School of Tech & Design: Cherise Weiss - IMDDA
