Abstract

This study sought to determine the reasons that eighth grade

students dislike math. The subjects were 49 eighth grade students.

They were given a survey consisting of 14 Likert scale questions and

three open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics, correlations and

answers from the open-ended questions were used to evaluate the

findings. The results were that 37 percent of the students indicated

they disliked math and that the reasons are related to their perceived

ability, negative affective anxiety, and a negative affective

environment in the classroom〮
