Get Inspired. Change Your Life!

I AM AN IRONMAN!
On October 8th, 2011, I had the opportunity to compete in the Ford Ironman World Championship at Kona. This race was comprised of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run. Prior to the race, I was letting my emotions take control of me. I had to constantly remind myself to BE TARA and that I could do it! One of the best parts of the Ironman experience was when I turned onto Alii drive and saw the finish; this was the moment that I have been training for. There are no words to express the sense of accomplishment and just how proud I was of myself - I finally had the faith in myself to go out there and obtain my wildest dreams. This is now my lifestyle to challenge myself, to try new things, to give others a sense of hope, and to smile in the face of adversity.

Inspiration Corner Pilot Bobby Bonham

My life changed, forever, the day I could not put on a pair of size 38 pants bought just 6 months before. I got on a scale and...265. WHAT!? What had I done! I was an athlete, smart, for crying out loud and knew better! Right? I found a rock outcropping, sat, stared at a mountain and began to sort myself out. My health and mental wellbeing were going to the top of the list from then on! I got up, took a deep breath, knowing it would be hard, dusted off and havent stopped since. That was three years ago..When I began this journey to save my life, I was inspired by a number of stories, many on the show The Biggest Loser. In particular, I identified with Tara Costa. I found strength and courage I did not know was in me, like Tara. I ended up surprising and inspiring myself, as a result. My trainer, Nate Whitman knew how to push me to give my best yet, at the same time, feel a sense of accomplishment with many meaningful milestones along the way. Tara, Nate and myself drove me to succeed and still do. Today, my head is in a much better place. As an airline pilot, the busy and somewhat irregular travel schedule was and remains a daunting challenge. I have had to plan ahead, make and take many meals along and learn to find the time for a workout with minimal equipment or space. I'm 6' 2"and now weigh 190 pounds, am an avid CrossFitter, stronger than ever, have 112/70BP @ 60bpm, perfect blood composition, the bone density of a 22 year old athlete and fat composition below 20% . -Bobby Bonham

Taras Tips for October
This is one of the hardest times of year for most individuals regarding food consumption. Halloween is right around the corner then followed by Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, and New Years. The holidays are hard for weight loss but below are a few ways to avoid the Halloween pitfalls! Access Leads to Excess: Only buy Halloween candy the day before Halloween and buy something you hate. Access leads to excess and if you have it in the house you are setting yourself up for temptation. Dont do that to yourself! It is cruel and unusual punishment! On the day after Halloween, bring the leftover candy to a friends house and make their day. If they dont want it, just get rid of it. You will be happy that you did. Walk it off: Dont sit in your car while trick-or-treating and let your kids do all the walking. Walk around with them! A causal stroll can burn approximately 150 calories! Eat before you leave: If you fill up on a healthy lunch/dinner before you leave, your chances of snacking on candy are decreased significantly! Give out something other than candy: Take the initiative and hand out something other than junk food. Go to the local dollar store and buy bubbles or pencils! Start a trend and give out something fun or healthy! Limit your kids intake: One night of letting your kids have some candy is not bad, but do not let them continually chow down. Why not let your children pick one of their favorite activities to do as a trade-off? This can help them with their negotiation skills :).

Kicks 4 Kids Launch in Kona, HI

Continue this until you have reached zero of each exercise. Remember, you always have time to workout!

September 28, 2011 was a remarkable day for the Inspire Change Foundation. We had the opportunity to launch the Kicks 4 Kids program and provided students from a local Kona elementary school, Kealakehe Elementary, with a brand new pair of sneakers. In addition, students were given a playbook that helps parents keep their children engaged in physical activity. This school just so happened to be located a few miles from the Ironman course in Kona. As the key childrens focused programming of the Inspire Change Foundation, Kicks 4 Kids is designed to provide sneakers or active footwear to children grades K-8 who may not otherwise be able to afford them. The mission of the Kicks 4 Kids program is to get kids back on their feet and active at an early age. During the visit, Tara addressed over 1,000 students in grades K-5 to share the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. I want to show these kids that we care that they become and stay more active and this is a small step in that direction, says Tara.
