PIPOC 2011

AN INVITATION

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board International Palm Oil Congress (PIPOC), a biennial event organized by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has set a new record with more than 2000 participants from 58 countries attending the event in 2009. With five concurrent conferences, PIPOC provides a strategic platform for interaction and in-depth deliberation of the many facets of oil palm and the palm oil industry from innovations, challenges and the latest developments. PIPOC 2011 themed Palm Oil - Fortifying and Energizing the World will focus on palm oil as the powerhouse in the oils and fats market and advances in the industry, including the need to balance its growth in harmony with the environment for sustainable development. The focus on the environment for the palm oil industry is in tandem with growing global concerns on environment conservation and sustainable production of the agricultural sector. These environmentally related issues, technology breakthroughs and the outlook of the commodities will be addressed by expert and renowned speakers. With fluctuating price of palm oil and petroleum, and the anticipated slowing down of world economy, the outlook for palm oil needs to be properly addressed. I take this opportunity to invite you to join industry leaders and hear from notable and renowned speakers their views at this not-to-be missed event - PIPOC 2011, from 15-17 November at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. You may also take part in the exhibition or be a sponsor. Kindest regards,

Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May Director-General MPOB

ACTIVITY
Evening Forum: Bracing Change for a Sustainable Tomorrow Moderator: Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May (MPOB, Malaysia) As an industry that is dependent on trade, its vulnerability to the changes in the current volatile environment is a cause for concern. With the labour crisis in-house still looming with no definite solution insight, natural disasters brought about by climatic chaos as well as the unsettled political situations in some parts of the world, e.g. West Asia, are in tandem creating further havoc. This in time will lead to food security issues. Although many would claim that the root of the food crisis is not because there is not enough food produced but more so due to what is known as food economics. It is said that economics determine policies. Only time can tell if these policies actually work for or against us. The Evening Forum at PIPOC 2011 aims to dissect and discuss these issues. Labour Issues in Plantation Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha (Sime Darby Plantation Sdn Bhd Malaysia) Global Perspective on Food Security Steve Christensen (Burson-Marsteller, USA) Impact of Politics on Economics James Fry (LMC, United Kingdom) Trade Issues Amidst Crisis M Nagarajan (Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysia)
