NIST Early Years School Closure Plan October-November 2011

These activities are suggestions and you may choose to do as many of them as you wish, and at any time during this school closure period. If you cannot do some activities due to not having resources available please just do the others. Please photograph your child doing any activities you choose to do, including the process and the products they create and at other times during the day. We may need to use these photos along with examples of the work they have made once school is open again. Suggested activities/experiences Self Management Skills: Go to the functional skills checklist at this link http://portal2.nist.ac.th/eleschool/ey/Wiki%20Pages/Functional%20Skills%20Che ck%20List.aspx and practice skills from this list, preferably in meaningful contexts such as cooking, helping with meal preparation, daily routines such as bathing, dressing and brushing teeth etc. Fine Motor: Encourage some kind of painting or art work every day. You can use a variety of mediums such as water colour paints, acrylic paints, crayons, marker pens. You may wish to take a photo of pictures your child creates or they can bring pictures in once school reopens. You can even take photos as the painting is being made, to show the various stages that it went through. Date each painting and ask your child if they would like to tell you about it. Write what they say in a space on the painting. For those of you with no paint at home, here is a link to some paint recipes: http://familycrafts.about.com/od/paintrecipes/Paint_Recipes.htm This blog has some excellent ideas for art/craft activities to do at home with your children. http://playathomemom3.blogspot.com/

Social Skills: If there are other children close by to you, that you can arrange to meet safely, then try to organize some play dates during the week so that your child has the chance to continue socializing with people outside of your family. Play dates do not need to be with children from NIST, or from the same age group. They can be with anyone that you know that can be safely accessed. Please assess the situation before travelling. The best option would be to make play dates with other children in your building or on your Soi. Creativity:

If you have access to natural resources such as sand, shells, seeds, leaves etc, help your child to collect some of these resources that they feel would make beautiful collages out of. You can keep the resources sorted into little bowls and they can be used to make collages on paper or on a tray. Dont stick the resources down. Instead take a photo each time they have finished creating their design, and then the resources can be sorted away to be used again later. Unit of Inquiry Who We Are: Here are some ideas for things that you and I can do together to find out more about ways people grow and change over time. Look at Me Grow We can look at some photos of me. You can tell me how old I was. I can put the photos in order. We can talk about how Ive grown! I Can Do It! I can do many new things. Ill act one out for you to guess. Ill tell you how I learned to do it. Then Ill share something I want to learn to do

Free Play: We recommend many opportunities for free play during the week. This is an important part of your childs learning and development, and there needs to be time allowed for it. Therefore we suggest that you do not structure each day around too many activities. Involve your child in negotiations about what activities they wish to do and when they would like to have free play.

Gross Motor, Music and Movement:

Follow this link to the Wiggles and encourage your child to dance and sing along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZK6N5sjBx8 After the song new links will be offered for genuine Wiggles songs. Feel free to let your child continue enjoying as many as they like.

Role play: Part of our outdoor programme for this week included role playing an airport and flying aeroplanes. This can be done at home using chairs, towels, sheets, boxes etc. Leave it up for a day or longer.

I.T. Integrated Learning: Mr. Brady, Mr. Jago and Ms. Nareeya have selected many age appropriate websites for you to access during the week. These cover a range of skills such as math skills, memory, language etc. If you choose to explore these I.T. options, please take photos of your child enjoying their favourite websites. http://www.poissonrouge.com/poissonrouge.php - the biggest hit with the kids http://www.sesamestreet.org/games - Sesame Street games http://www.moppetgames.com/educational-games/play/memory/ memory game http://www.roythezebra.com/ - online stories and literacy activities (EY2 maybe) http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/interactive/onlinestory.htm online stories http://www.starfall.com/ - reading and literacy activities (EY2) http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-stories.htm - online stories and activities NIST Website Collection There is a heap of great online games that kids can do as part of the online curriculum.
