Wastewater solution Due to the vast damage experienced by the sewer network in Zone 2, EnviroLink proposes to introduce a vacuum

sewer network for this region. The vacuum network provides greatest resilience with low long term cost. With added resilience means less likeliness of failure and hence less risk of harmful discharge to the environment. The waste is moved faster than any other network which allows for less degradation to occur in transit and less odour build up. This involves cheaper construction as the pipes are shallow and can be laid in same trench as other networks (~50% savings in capital cost). The vacuum network will require HDPE piping to allow for maximum flexibility and higher strength requirements from high speed flows, and means absolutely no leakages. This option also allows for long term sustainability and the opportunity for population growth as it is easy to extend (no strict grading issues). The Feldwick Dr pump station (PS) will need to be refurbished to allow for controlling of the vacuum network, and the Askerton Dr pump station will be able to be made redundant due to that region being incorporated into vacuum (eliminating risk of private land PS failure). It is not feasible to change the Charles St PS to a vacuum station or move it, so EnviroLink proposes to upgrade the single main to dual mains to and from the station. The Beach St PS is at far less risk and so will be fine as is. For contingency, all PSs will have smaller backup generators installed to eliminate risk of discharge during power failures and restoration processes. Greywater recycling is a very environmentally friendly option, particularly for the following reasons: reduced freshwater use, reduced stress on reticulation network and WWTP (saving $), assists in groundwater recharge, plant growth and soil fertility. Recycling for use of recycled greywater indoors as well as outdoors involves diverting greywater though a bigger, more expensive treatment system which reduces BOD, Suspended Solids, E.Coli and Turbidity to values below 3 mg/L, 2mg/L, 1 org./100mL and 0.47 NTU, respectively. The greywater treatment system involves minimal power consumption and is user friendly with automated processes and is self-maintaining. EnviroLink proposes to install greywater recycling system into the redeveloped vacuum sewer network and all properties which discharge into the same gravity line as the vacuum network does at the very least. Over time, the remainder of Kaiapoi East properties will be able to have them built in and eventually the region will be far more sustainable with less water usage and power savings.
