Fiji ranked among worlds best

World Bank and the International Finance Corporation report have ranked Fiji among the top two thirds of the most entrepreneurial friendly economies in the world. The Doing Business 2012: Doing Business in a More Transparent World report measures the relative ease of 130 economies, ranking each nations economy in 10 distinct areas of business regulation; from registering property, to paying taxes and enforcing contracts. Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, in recognizing Fijis new position among the international business community, said government is committed to investing in the Fijian people who will continue to help drive innovation and sustained economic growth in our country and the region. International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) secretary-general Khaiyums comment during a recent visit. Fiji is obviously a hub for the region, in terms of expertise and knowledge, Steele said. He encouraged the Training Standard Authority to perform a stock take to support the Fijian governments transparent efforts to uncover international trade opportunities while complying with international trade standards. In addition to continued development of Fijis relationships in foreign trade and investment, government is pursuing additional priorities for the island nation, including information technology, emergency preparedness, infrastructure development, health-care programmes, social welfare, and environmental policy.

Turners and Growers Fiji Director Bobby Sharma says the labourers were hired as independent contractors and are paid according to the countrys wage laws. The contract was only for three or four days but it took them six or seven days. The whole deal was based on a lump sum payment like one set amount and that probably worked out as $10 a day given that it was supposed to take three days but it took them twice as much as expected. Sharma adds they are now looking into the claims.

It is even necessary for the safety of our people as it enables early warning systems for tsunamis and other natural disasters, he said. "Fiji needs to cover a vast area of lowly populated islands, the limitations of resources, and the relative economies of scale and on the other, existing high mobile voice penetration and reduced tariff rates on smart phones: mobile broadband is the way forward. Collaboration therefore is essential. We must collaborate with the private sector. We must collaborate with international institutions and multinational corporations. We must also collaborate with each other as

A number of countries in the Pacific are seeking to link up with the Southern Cross submarine cable which lands in Fiji, he said.

Diwali is an important festival in our calendar, which all the communities in Fiji look forward to celebrating with their families, friends and neighbours. Everybody adores new and bright clothes for Diwali, especially the women who wear their best attires. Jacks of Fiji, Jacks Little India began its Diwali preparation well over six months ago to offer the best deals for their customers. Jacks of Fiji regional manager Suresh Sebastian says they have one of the best deals to offer their customers during this festival of lights celebration. We have a buying department whose staff goes out into the markets of India and personally handpick exclusive Indian wear for our customers here in Fiji, said Mr Sebastian. We focus on two important factors, which are quality and price, and we do not have just one target market. We have one of the finest ranges of collection suitable for everyone. Jacks of Fiji in the past offered their customers designer pieces from famous Bollywood designers such as Manish Collection. Famous Bollywood actresses Hema Malini and Kareena Kapoor have their clothes designed by these designers. We have received good sales for this year and are expecting more, Mr Sebastian said. shipping companies see the advantages in offloading at the Suva Port there would be more opportunities to expand the hub concept. There is a new term in the shipping trade, basically means that instead of three or four separately owned and operated ships carrying their own containers and serving the same ports, they choose one ship (no matter the ownership) and use it to carry all of their cargo. "What this means is that all of the shipping lines share all the costs, fuel, port fees, and other expenses. They do not share in the revenue that is directly related to how many containers each shipping company loads on the one selected vessel but just in the costs," said Mr Yuen. "This is extremely important to the region for it means that we can count on sustainability in our shipping industry and more confidence in international shipping companies that Pacific services will continue over a long period," said Mr. Yuen. "While the kind of growth that fuels Singapore and Dubai is a long way off, the signs indicate that Fiji is going in the right direction." * George Rubine is with Pacific Reach Limited, a public relations company.

Cargo shipping suCCess

EDDIE Yuen has a dream. He believes that Fiji can grow to be a major shipping hub like Singapore and Dubai. And this Shipping and Commercial Manager for Williams & Gosling should know. Having worked for WG for over 10 years, and being a part of a company at the Port of Suva with more and more international shipping companies using the facility as a transshipment point into the islands. "What this means is that these ships offload at Suva wharf their containers (cargo) destined for ports in the Pacific. "As shipping agents one of the WG responsibilities is to upload these containers onto a selected ship that services these island ports. Forwarding these containers is called transshipping." "And for Fiji it has worked. From business that we've brought into Fiji totals 2,263 containers for transshipment. In dollar terms that is $362,080 for loading and offloading, alone. "Add this to the increased ships that call into Fiji that topped 180 for the year with an average Port and dockage fee of $20,000 or $3,660,000 per year, this is becoming quite sizable."

Shipping expert Eddie Yuen.

He said that Fiji had become the hub (the transshipment port) for Wallis, Futuna, Funafuti, Tarawa, and Marjaro as well as "There is a reason why the international ships are offloading in Suva and giving us their containers for transshipment they have confidence in us, in Fiji as a country, to look after their products. The Solomon Islands will continue to raise the issue of solidarity with the Fijian Government to achieve its roadmap to democracy. These were the words of the Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs Peter Shanel Agovaka as he prepared for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, Australia this week. Mr Agovaka said there was a need for the international community to engage with Fiji and assist in taking the country forward. We will need to help Fiji and engage with them in achieving their roadmap and strategic framework to democracy I'm not saying that we should forget what they've done but the past will always remind us of how we can go forward and change things for better. He added his countrys stance on any issues with Fiji remained the same because it was one of the biggest economies in the region. If you look at the world fora, United States is now engaging with Fiji and is bringing US aid to Fiji and the Pacific. Other countries in the world are also engaging with Fiji and it is only the Commonwealth that has suspended Fiji, as well as the Pacific Island Forum, the Foreign Affairs Minister said. That is not a wise policy, because, for example, in a number of negotiations like the PACER Plus negotiation, we certainly need Fiji because of its economy. For example, like the economic partners that have been in the European Union, Economic Partnership Agreement and Fiji is one of the signatories of the Cotonou Agreement and hence their suspension from any meeting is not right. If the issue of Fiji will arise once again in the CHOGM, my country will continue to lobby for the engagement with Fiji. Our policy is very simple. We believe in a strong advocacy that we should always engage with Fiji, he added. I keep saying this to my friends, Richard Marles and Murray McCully Fiji. The Government comes and goes but Fiji Islands and the Fijian people will always be there. They are our neighbours and it is important for us to engage with them.

us agents see fiJian friendliness
Recently, four agents from Classic were given a chance to come to Fiji and become acquainted with the destination discovering what Fiji presented as a tourism destination. The trip was organised by Outrigger representative Joan Marso. Targeting the upscale honeymoon and family markets, the agents enjoyed becoming familiar with many Fijian resorts and the destination itself. At the Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji, sales manager Jennifer Yip hosted the agents to lunch and took them on a thorough site inspection of the bure, deluxe rooms, award-winning Bebe Spa Sanctuary, the butler service and more. Ms Yip said the travel agents were very impressed, especially with the spectacular kilometers of uninterrupted view of the Pacific Ocean. They found the Bure ni Loloma, Wedding Chapel, spectacular with its location on the edge of a protected ocean lagoon. It was a first-time trip for all agents. As for Fiji they were all very excited to have had the opportunity to experience the destination firsthand, she said. Ms Yip said all the agents agreed that Fiji lived up to its reputation as the friendliest place on earth and one of the most relaxing destinations in the world. They were excited to go back to Los Angeles to sell Fiji as a destination, she said.

marriage mix up
Tailevu is pleading with authorities to clear up the blunder his daughter has been dragged into to allow her to marry. Malakai Seru said his daughter, Emele Ranadi's plan to marry was now under a cloud because she had "been proclaimed married according to the registrar's office" in what Mr Seru is claiming is a case of identity theft. Petero Delai were to have wedded in March this year but a visit to the registry office in Suva found records stating she was already married. "What we were told was that Emele got Dreketi, Macuata, someone we have never even heard of," Mr Seru said. Levu, so how can she have married in Macuata?" he asked. The family lodged a complaint with the year after Mr Seru travelled to the area to further investigate the matter. "The only thing I've been able to find out is yes, there was a girl who was married using my daughter's name and who got separated from her husband and is now living in Taveuni, but nothing concrete," the disturbed father said. Mr Seru said the matter caused a lot of grief to the couple, who now have a baby and were living with relatives because Mr Seru is a catechist with the Methodist Church. "It's terrible for me as a father and also because I have a standing with the church and I can't just sit back and do nothing when I see what my daughter's going through," he said. The local media has made the case known to police who neither confirmed nor denied the matter for the last month. But this newspaper has obtained a document citing a report had been lodged by the family bearing the case number 163/11. Mr Delai and Ms Ranadi have called on relevant authorities to assist them in this case. "I don't know why someone would want to use my birth certificate, and how they got away with it is an even bigger question," Ms Ranadii said. Mr Delai voiced similar sentiments saying it was in their best interest that they wed because they now had a child, and added it was proving too costly for them having to frequently visit the police station to find out updates of their report.

president's diwali message

'focus on spiritual meaning'

WHILE Diwali is popularly known as the festival of lights, the most significant spiritual meaning is the awareness of the inner light and the removal of spiritual darkness. In his Diwali message, President Ratu philosophy was the belief that there was something beyond the physical body and mind, which was pure, infinite and eternal. "Our nation needs spiritual enlightenment to rid us from the evil of enmity, division and discord and to change our attitude, our thinking, the way we live and the way we are governed at all levels of society for the betterment of all," Ratu Epeli said. "Let us not be overwhelmed with the joy and festivities planned for Diwali celebrations but let us with all sincerity and with a genuine desire focus our attention on the festival's deep spiritual meaning and intrinsic value in order to celebrate it with a difference," he said. "The Diwali celebrations therefore provide a unique opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to the task that we had collectively started coming together, joining hands and working together, to address all our common problems and participate in national development and nation building in our quest to building a better future for our nation and for our children," he added. Ratu Epeli said the celebrations also provided the opportunity to learn from our mistakes, take stock of our achievements, and map out new direction in our journey towards building a better Fiji. Bainimarama in his message said the true spirit of Diwali pursued peace and prosperity. He said it was incumbent upon everyone to move the country forward. While the occasion was one of the

"These changes are designed to achieve the right balance between public safety and a defendant's right to be considered innocent until proven guilty, and to not be arbitrarily detained," Mr Power said. other proposals include: it clear in legislation that bail will not be granted in return for information. Public safety and a fair trial must be the primary concern when deciding whether to grant bail. Bail should not be used as a bargaining chip in return for information from the criminal underworld. Police bail so that the offence is punishable by up to three months' imprisonment, in addition to the existing penalty of a fine of up to $1000. a defendant is "bailable as of right" because some of these offences can cause serious harm to others (e.g. abandoning children, injury by an unlawful act, and failing to provide the necessaries of life). bail regime into legislation to ensure it is administered consistently and effectively. strengthening bail for young defendants: old who have previously served a prison sentence subject to the standard (adult) tests for bail, rather than the strong presumption in favour of bail that currently applies (a court may remand a defendant of this age in custody only if it is satisfied there is no other course of action acceptable in the circumstances, or if the reverse burden of half of young defendants in this category offended while on bail.

tougher bail for our worst Criminals

Bail will be tougher to get for those accused of the worst crimes under proposed changes announced by Justice Minister Simon Power. A bill to be introduced to parliament next year would reverse the burden of proof for bail to be granted. Currently the prosecution has to prove that an accused is a risk to public safety to have bail denied, but under the new law, the defense team would have to prove the accused is not a risk to public safety or interfering with witnesses or evidence that would affect their trial. The reversal would apply to those accused of murder or a serious class A drug offence. It would also apply to number of violent and sexual offences, including the charges of sexual conduct with a young person under 16, kidnapping, aggravated burglary, and assault with intent to rob. This focuses on defendants with the highest risk of committing serious offences while on bail, rather than those with the highest rates of offending on bail, which may or repetitively breach bail conditions. Currently, unless it is a particularly serious breach of bail conditions there is little police can do to immediately act on a breach. found in breach of court-imposed curfews, and return them home or to a place where they will comply with the curfew. in their homes and their communities and these changes reinforce that," Mr Power said. He said the changes will result in some increase in fiscal costs for the justice sector, such as additional costs for legal aid, and costs resulting from more defendants spending time in prison pending trial. It is million per year with the funding coming from existing baselines.

obama hand outs Cheques to struggling ameriCans
barack obama has admitted that he sometimes handouts personal cheques to americans who write him their tales of economic woe, according to a new book. White House correspondent Eli Saslow made the revelation in his new book "Ten Letters", about Obama's correspondence with the American public, the media reported. According to Saslow, the US President told her that he sometimes felt drawing on his own bank account was all he could do for Americans struggling to pay their bills in the embattled American economy. "It's not something I should advertise, but it has happened," Obama was quoted as telling Saslow in an excerpt from the book in The Washington Post. Other times, he confessed, he had forwarded letters to government agencies or Cabinet secretaries with an attached handwritten note reading: "Can you please take care of this?" "Some of these letters you read and you say, 'Gosh, I really want to help this person, and I may not have the tools to help them right now,'" Obama told Saslow. "And then you start thinking about the fact that for every one person that wrote describing their story, there might be another hundred thousand going through the same thing. "So there are times when I'm reading the letters and I feel pained that I can't do more, faster, to make a difference in their lives," he added. Obama reads ten letters from the American people every day, using them to help shape policy and to enliven his speeches with the stories of real people. Doubleday published the book this week.

Married and with a young daughter, all is not well at this rural Ohio household. Bad things start to happen at home and soon even Curtis loved ones begin to question his sanity. Friction soon develops between Curtis and the community which takes us into unchartered waters.
